I was going to look for a Sugarhill discog online, haven't gotten around to it yet.

some of it can accurately be described as "disco with people talking over it."

Hahahaha! You know it brother!

there's reasons that era electro-funk and that era New Order sound similar, and their names are Arthur Baker and John Robie!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Heheh. I saw Arthur Baker did a show on BBC recently.

personally what I'd really like to hear is recordings on 70's dj sets by those guys - Bam especially

there was a Flash & the 5 live bootleg making the rounds in the 80s, can't remember the name of it, sorry my vinyl's in storage...

I count myself very lucky to have seen both Flash & Bam spin in the early 80s (Herc & Theodore too). Bam held forth for years on Friday nites at the Roxy roller rink, ably assisted by Red Alert, Afrika Islam, Jazzy Jay & co. ZULU NATION THROWDOWN COME IN PEACE

my vague memory says Flash's DJ sets were more sliced & diced while Bambaataa & crew were slightly more recognizably song-oriented...but don't trust me on that.

Afrika Bambaataa at his Grandmaster Flash-iest: "Jazzy Sensation".
Grandmaster Flash at his Afrika Bambaataa-iest: "Scorpio".

there was a good flash cd the other year, not sure of the provenance of all of it, seems to be some sets from the late 70s though.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 09:57 (seventeen years ago) link

seems to be some sets from the late 70s though.

It's mostly modern mixes he did for Strut with some classic break records, and then those two older mixes from '79 and '82. Strut must have had to clear a lot of stuff for that one.

I recently bought Bambaata's Looking For The Perfect Beat 1980-1985. Is there anything essential that isn't on it?

Oh god, probably not. But I'm not an expert just yet.

Question about the Bambaata comp. What's up with the similiarly titled first two tracks?

one year passes...

Anyone ever see Afrika Bambaata spin recently ? I've got a friend who wants me to go but I don't want to pay 20 bucks for an old school hip hop set that I've heard rehashed hundreds of times at hip hop club. Does anyone know what he drops in his sets these days ?

Bambaata has the edge w the James Brown collab but Grandmaster Flash's "Scorpio" is still amazing

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 17:02 (six years ago) link

the media silence wrt the Bambaataa and the wide spread child abuse allegations is pretty disturbing

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 17:17 (six years ago) link

idk what to make of that stuff, I think the most high profile thing I saw was something in pfork? can't remember.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 9 August 2017 17:23 (six years ago) link

it's def not getting Cosby-level attention or anything, but then he's sort of a cult figure these days

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 9 August 2017 17:24 (six years ago) link

yeah I would think for most people the first response to that headline would be "who is Afrika Bamaataa?"

really sad how things shook out for both these groups. imagine how full of potential it all must have seemed in 1982.
