I forgot about "Monster" - Oh, man - I don't think that answer can be topped. Peter Buck found a tremolo pedal at a garage sale and used record stores have to build an annex.

I've seen a fair amount of Alien Ant Farm lately.

Time to stop them blasted italics.

Curt, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The easy winner round these parts is the BULWORTH soundtrack. Even after all these years, they keep piling up. Hundreds of them. Ghetto Supastar was such a great track it got all those people to buy that snoozefest of an album and not get rid of it until they finally got the song on mp3 or something. I myself got $1.50 for my copy last summer.

1994 was the high-watermark of sold-back CDs, it seems to me from having worked used-CD retail for a few years. You can ALWAYS find copies of R.E.M.'s Monster, Green Day's Dookie, Liz Phair's Whip-Smart, Hole's Live Through This and Neil Young's Sleeps with Angels in a used bin--multiple copies. At a store I worked at in Minneapolis, the owner had a policy not to buy any more copies of Monster--there was an entire shelf-full at corporate HQ.

M. Matos, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

In a couple of months you'll see multiple copies of the Strokes there.

patrick, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Onion had a list of "Top CDs Ever Sold -- Back To Used CD Stores" a while back... I think Living Colour's "Vivid" topped it.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Don't forget Sugar, kids. I guess somebody thought Bob Mould's 90s band was gonna be huge. The local CD Warehouse here would probably pay YOU to take some of those CDs. Not just the albums, but the EP and all the singles (which of course are somewhat obsolete cuz of the B-sides album [which also crowds used bins]) can be had for a song.

Belly's King CD is also pretty hard to sell back.

Pocketful of Kryptonite by the Spindoctors.

Lord Custos, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

at LEAST three copies.

Lord Custos, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i just took a bunch in and they wouldn't even touch the early OLP. he had stacks of them behind the counter.

T, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

'93 had some good ones -- Sheryl Crow, Collective Soul. You know you haven't had a good shelf life when used copies that were once purchased outnumber dusty promo copies of Candlebox and Cracked Rear View in the bins.

Andy K, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

ok computer and the second garbage album, version 2.0.

anything pseudo-software related, basically.

david, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Presidents of the United States of America, of course! Can't see I've seen copies of Sugar or Neil Young's Trans (I'd probably buy it!) in the bins. LOTS of Alien Ant Farm lately, though that will be replaced soon by some other one-hit wonder.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I always see a lot of Barry White CDs.

Honda, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have a theory that there are now more Psychedelic Furs LPs in existence than there were ever made, due to them mating in the used record stores. I did have a slightly deranged and paranoid essay about this somewhere, but I wrote it years ago so probably won't be able to find it (not that it's very interesting, but hey). For the record, I did take one out of its natural environment, but there are still masses roaming around out there. So you kids be careful, okay?

emil.y, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

the smiths LPs

di, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Six By Seven and Subaqwa CDs are everywhere in Melbourne. Usually $5 apiece. This wouldn't bother me so much if I hadn't bought both albums at full price when they first came out.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

When I first started looking through and buying used (LP era), there were always mint copies of that Steppenwolf album with the big Superman-style S on the front. Some stores had dozens.

nickn, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tin Machine. I was told the most often returned cd in Toronto (at my favorite indie store) was surprise surprise, Double Nickels on A Dime.

Mr Noodles, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Which shop is that, Mr. Noodles? Soundscapes or Rotate This, perhaps? I should try taking my copy back just to tick them off. And if they take it, I'll then buy it back because it's, like, essential.

ah, yes. Ultrasound. Why they ever released that locally in Australia I don't know. Every second-hand store has a half dozen copies.

Tusk? I've never seen it secondhand. If I did I'd buy it immediately.

Pale Saints "Slow Buildings"

Always this one and not "The Comforts of Madness", which I sought for what seemed like an eternity. Likewise for countless other artists that happened to fall alphabetically next to names I always checked for. I got ill from seeing them over and over in all those wretched bins.

Curt, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I was going to say Soundscapes but figured it didnt matter. I dont go to Rotate This unless I have to, they always cough an attitude about my sideburns.

Whipped Cream and Other Delights

Sean, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, I've noticed the Herb Alpert inundation in Goodwills myself. It always makes me wonder: was he really THAT popular in the early sixties? Or is it possible that Alpert and his cronies bought up loads of his albums to artificially pump their chart numbers (much the same way scientologists buy up copies of Dianetics), dumping them twenty-thirty years later in Goodwills across the country? Come to think of it, it probably would've been easier to burn or bury them. Nevermind, then.

Michael Daddino, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Alpert was sort of the last adult pop artist to dominate the album charts before rock took over in the late 60s. His was one of the few new sounds to catch on. All the hip TV game shows used his songs for their theme - Newlywed Game, Dating Game. Yeah, he was big for about two years. Plus, that "Whipped Cream" cover is rather sriking in the Goodwill bin.

The Best Of Bread.

JM, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention that Rembrandts album with the theme from 'Friends' on it.

Bobby D Gray, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Best Of Bread.
Sadly there wasn't anything on it.
How about the Spice girls? I see tons of their CDs in the shops. As well as Dream Syndicate and Wynn CDs.

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

In the realm of funny LP covers, Soul Asylum's Clam Dip and Other Delights has to rank in the top five. It is just like the Alpert cover, but with a fat guy covered in clam dip instead of the chick with whipped cream.

REM's Monster is of course the monster of used CD bins. Other frequent spottings: Tubthumping, every Bush album.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well I dont know about used cd's but I think it's a requirement of every salvation army, savers, and deseret industries, to have a copy of something by Fleetwood Mac, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in the used lp's.

I think that Joan Osborne's RELISH is always in the used bins. I guess people bought it before they found out that it sucked.

nineteen years pass...

My neighbours have two opaque plastic storage boxes at the end of their garden today with DVDs/Books/CDs and a little money box honour-system going, as I walked passed I could see that the first CD in the pile was White Ladder by David Gray, it was weirdly comforting.
