The easy winner round these parts is the BULWORTH soundtrack. Even after all these years, they keep piling up. Hundreds of them. Ghetto Supastar was such a great track it got all those people to buy that snoozefest of an album and not get rid of it until they finally got the song on mp3 or something. I myself got $1.50 for my copy last summer.

1994 was the high-watermark of sold-back CDs, it seems to me from having worked used-CD retail for a few years. You can ALWAYS find copies of R.E.M.'s Monster, Green Day's Dookie, Liz Phair's Whip-Smart, Hole's Live Through This and Neil Young's Sleeps with Angels in a used bin--multiple copies. At a store I worked at in Minneapolis, the owner had a policy not to buy any more copies of Monster--there was an entire shelf-full at corporate HQ.

Don't forget Sugar, kids. I guess somebody thought Bob Mould's 90s band was gonna be huge. The local CD Warehouse here would probably pay YOU to take some of those CDs. Not just the albums, but the EP and all the singles (which of course are somewhat obsolete cuz of the B-sides album [which also crowds used bins]) can be had for a song.

Belly's King CD is also pretty hard to sell back.

I have a theory that there are now more Psychedelic Furs LPs in existence than there were ever made, due to them mating in the used record stores. I did have a slightly deranged and paranoid essay about this somewhere, but I wrote it years ago so probably won't be able to find it (not that it's very interesting, but hey). For the record, I did take one out of its natural environment, but there are still masses roaming around out there. So you kids be careful, okay?

Yeah, I've noticed the Herb Alpert inundation in Goodwills myself. It always makes me wonder: was he really THAT popular in the early sixties? Or is it possible that Alpert and his cronies bought up loads of his albums to artificially pump their chart numbers (much the same way scientologists buy up copies of Dianetics), dumping them twenty-thirty years later in Goodwills across the country? Come to think of it, it probably would've been easier to burn or bury them. Nevermind, then.

Alpert was sort of the last adult pop artist to dominate the album charts before rock took over in the late 60s. His was one of the few new sounds to catch on. All the hip TV game shows used his songs for their theme - Newlywed Game, Dating Game. Yeah, he was big for about two years. Plus, that "Whipped Cream" cover is rather sriking in the Goodwill bin.

My neighbours have two opaque plastic storage boxes at the end of their garden today with DVDs/Books/CDs and a little money box honour-system going, as I walked passed I could see that the first CD in the pile was White Ladder by David Gray, it was weirdly comforting.
