come on is "Yah mo be there" that bad?

startrekman, Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:06 (nineteen years ago) link

no

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:18 (nineteen years ago) link

And does it get more or less annoying on finding out what "yah mo" means?

Acme (acme), Saturday, 27 November 2004 14:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Should I ask?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 16:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I always though it was "Yes, I am going to." As in "Yeah, I'm gonna" -----> "Yah, I munna" ----> "Ya mo"?

Or is it some spiritual thing, like "Jah give, Jah take"?

J (Jay), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought it was a spiritual thing, like "Yah" is short for "Yahweh" and the title amounts to "Yahweh is coming soon."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Joseph is correct, it is short for "Yahweh." I have Michael's best-of CD on Rhino. Given to me by a friend who just couldn't bear to own it anymore.

And, uh, I forgot to say that in the liner notes, McDonald tells the story of how they came up with the title. I don't have them handy though.

bleep, Saturday, 27 November 2004 23:27 (nineteen years ago) link

How is 'Yah mo' short for Yahweh? It's the same number of syllables!

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Sorry - I see now that it's 'Yah' not 'Yah mo' that it short for Yahweh. What does the 'mo' mean then?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:20 (nineteen years ago) link

come on is "Yah mo be there" that bad?

No, it's much worse.

Marcus, Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:24 (nineteen years ago) link

> What does the 'mo' mean then?

My reading: "Gonna." As in "I'mo get you sucka."

and then he wrote Rick Astley "In the name of love"

I could have sworn when I used to hear this on nauseating Kasie Kasum that they said it has something to do with God, this song. That God would be with you. All that kind of crap.

Bimble (bimble), Sunday, 28 November 2004 08:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmmm. I'd always assumed it was

"Yes, I'm Going to Be There" -----> "Yeah, I'm Gonna Be There" ------> "Yah, I'm-a Be There" -----> "Ya Mo Be There"

In any event, it's heinously godawful.

I thought The 40-Year-Old Virgin would've revived interest in Mike.

Great song. I often use "Yah mo be there" in conversation for a laugh

eight years pass...

somehow never noticed the instrumental break on this, it's really fun! kinda turns the track into music for the water level in a Sonic the Hedgehog game.
