I knew her back in the college days, she's very nice.

In spite of myself I've hit re-play on "Carbon Monoxide", before though the rest I've heard is unbearable.

'Us' is beautiful, wavering strings and all.

I am listening to her CD, finally, possibly a year after I first got a copy (though I think it is only just now actually coming out per se' now?) I like the CD more than I thought I would. I am, at least right this second, of the opinion that she has more Nelly Furtado in her than Nellie McKay does, which means I think I like her better. I'm not sure why yet, though. (The cover photo is funnier, for sure.)

Eh, I dunno...second time through, her preciousness is starting to annoy me. Maybe she's got a better rhythmic sense and a fuller voice than Nellie (though not a better rhythmic sense and a fuller voice than Nelly), but a lower IQ? I don't know if that should matter, though. Or even if I'm right. I don't trust IQ tests anyway; they're totally biased in several ways. I wonder what others think.

"Us" is indeed somewhat beautiful, though--no argument there.

chuck, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Haven't heard the record but she was very, very boring and cloying live

Funny, my reaction exactly (cf upthread): a short infatuation followed by a long ehhh.

I don't even like this! And normally I'm a total sucker for piano-playing, precious, pretentious female singer-songwriters. "Us" is marvellous but she's a bit too... strident, I think.

i was expecting it to be more fun somehow based on the cover art

Any thoughts on ' . . meets the gravediggers'?

Soukesian, Saturday, 21 January 2006 13:54 (eighteen years ago) link

It's really only of any value to people who don't have her first two records. A lot of that earlier stuff is substandard (and the decision to leave what's probably her best song, "Samson," off of the compilation is a real head scratcher).

i like the new album, espesh the jeff lynne produced track.

i am surprised how negative this thread is. the only song i know is fidelity and it is one of the few songs with massive airplay i quite like. her voice is pretty unique while not being too weird/freakish.

i had no idea she was this popular

phillippa minge (electricsound), Thursday, 9 July 2009 22:48 (fourteen years ago) link

have had to listen to her way less since leaving university

thomp, Thursday, 9 July 2009 22:57 (fourteen years ago) link

quite a talented songwriter / doesn't seem interested in working through that talent / retreat to twee affectation / haven't actually listened to last two records / still annoyed at sitting through incredibly poor live performance / shared car ride on way back, girl giving lift notices the line "kiss me with your mouth open" on mt goats record on car stereo for first time / goes "oh jesus that's so gross" / car swerves

has anyone heard her new album "far"? the german review i read was rather reserved. it said it was mainstreamish, without rough edges.

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 14 August 2009 20:36 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah actually reviewed it. it is rather mainstreamish, but a really nice record. i was relistening the previous one, and not really like its sound anymore after hearing this new one. (i guess it's all the gloss!)
song picks: "The Calculation" (gently swinging opener) "Eet" (best ballad) "Human of the Year" (something bizarre with lots of changes)

i think Regina can do better, i like her piano chords, but maybe she should take a little more chances with arrangements (Rufus Wainwright-style) i think she's much more talented then she shows so far (and she might get stuck in this mode, selling a lot of records right now)

anyway, well worth a listen.

Ludo, Friday, 14 August 2009 20:43 (fourteen years ago) link

it is rather mainstreamish

Ludo, Friday, 14 August 2009 20:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Didn't really like Far on first listen cos i thought it was rather mainstreamish. But after a few more listens it grew on me very quickly. I think the thing with Regina is that she seems to get more and more polished with each album she makes. Underneath all that sheen and lustre of the production however her music is almost defiantly anti-mainstream in its quirkiness.

what do yall think of the domed stadium idea?

dylannn, Saturday, 15 August 2009 17:57 (fourteen years ago) link

have to correct myself, Eet is not really a ballad, it is my favourite song though on the record.

Ludo, Saturday, 15 August 2009 18:42 (fourteen years ago) link

her defiant quirkiness and polished pussyfooting production makes me want to hurl

Just me, or does this sound just the tiniest bit like Yeah Yeah Yeahs? At least during the verses.

As pointed out above, there are numerous threads on her with almost no response. Don't know a thing about her, but "Laughing With" is great at the end of a Leftovers episode.

haven't heard recent stuff but iirc she fills the 'former drama club' niche both better and less sociopathically than our a. palmer. which is fine!

So does Regina Spektor live in the WNYC studio or something? We're coming up on 20 years of me randomly tuning into WNYC and hearing her as a guest on one show or another. Versus the entire rest of the world, where I almost never encounter anything Regina Spektor-related.
