recommend me some Sacred Harp Singing tracks

Many here in New England call it "shape-note" singing, to make clear that it's a secular exercise.

this is one area of american folk music i find difficult to actually enjoy, with some exceptions. there's a record of "antioch" i like very much, i forget the name of the choir.

I've got the Awake; My Soul doc coming in the mail. Should I be excited?

going to a sing tomorrow for the first time, should i be nervous? cuz i am kinda nervous. being an atheist who has never heard this stuff life before, much less sung it.

pretty much had to mumble my way through this. i'll be better prepared next time. a lot of fun. a small and casual group but when they/we managed to hit the harmonies it was really something awesome to hear.

I am going to a big group shape note jam on Saturday at a church in Marthasville MO that will be followed by a big ass potluck! STOKED!!!
Not expecting to be able to really sing with everyone but I'm mostly planning on soaking up the vibe, anyhow.

I keep wanting to go to one of these! Tell us all about it after you come back?

good luck!!! the sing i went to was very small and so kind of uncomfortable for a first-time singer. i gather that it's easier to kinda fake yer way through a larger group.

I'm going with a friend who has been meeting with a group of 8 people locally, I'm thinking she can give me some pointers. She said that even in the small group the effect was pretty strong, a whole church full of people is gonna be intense.

I couldn't even pretend that I knew how to sing along with these folks but both of the hardbound hymnals (available for purchase!) were thrust into my hands upon sitting in the pew. This was a 25th anniversary Sacred Harp convention at a tiny church in Pinckney MO. We got there after the potluck had started and just gorged on food and good vibes. The crowd was more diverse age-wise than I expected it to be. There were people from all over Missouri and a fair number from Virginia and other southeastern states. Even some folks from the UK. The singing was really impressive. Certain numbers (literally, each hymn was referred to by number) really got the crowd going. It was mostly solemn, though, and even kind of competitive. They would run through the hymn only singing do-re-mi-fa-so for the first verse, then start the hymn over and sing the words. They are doing it all day tomorrow, too. Went and had a beer at a sweet country sports bar afterward, they had a shuffle board table!

They were going in and out of rounds and the whole thing seemed really tight on most of the hymns.
It was pretty mindboggling. There weren't any kinds of notes in the scores or anything. Also, random repeats. I just went up to the balcony and soaked it all in.

Oh and there was a kid (11?12?) wearing a parody sweatshirt that said "The Sosauth Butt" and inverted the North Face logo.
I guess a student here at MU has been selling these and is now taking some heat over it? Was very amused at the sight of the sweatshirt and the story. Can't believe he wore it to church! Even if it was Saturday.

Inspiration for 'Frontier', Herndon says, came from a Sacred Harp Meetup in Berlin which was jointly led by Evelyn Saylor who made up part of the ensemble of collaborators that worked on the new album. Saylor was brought on board to help arrange 'Frontier'.

Speaking about the meetup, Herndon continues: "People gathered in a square to sing facing each other. When I stood in the middle the power of the voices brought me to tears. It was partly pure sonics and the beauty of the songs, but also the sight of witnessing people from all different backgrounds come together under such a simple and elegant premise.
