So, what about her version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"? Not at all like Marvin's, almost Stax-like to a degree, innit? Plus the 70's stuff, man..."You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me", "If I Was Your Woman", the aforementioned "Midnight Train To Georgia"...great stuff. She released a new album two or three years ago that my friend Robert says is very slept-on.
On the VH-1 Behind The Music Little Richard says "I think she's the QUEEN OF SOUL" and then gives the camera that look of "hey, I'm so controversial, because ppl usually say Aretha Franklin is the queen of soul DO YOU SEE?"

Seems like an awfully odd juxtaposition --- even for ILM.

There, I said it.
I saw the Chemical Brothers open for New Order and it really sealed my opinion that they are crap. Can't understand why so many people make such a big deal about them. So yeah, I'll take Gladys & The Pips anyday, even if I know very little about their career.

I'm voting for Gladys Knight for having the good taste and sound judgement to never collaborate with a member of Oasis.

Nothing against the Chemical Brothers, but Gladys Knight is kind of a must-have, no?

This was an odd Cal thread, juxtaposing one ILX fave with a true great.
Usually, the pairing was an ILX fave with some 'less than great' act.
Public Enemy Vs Sleeper, for instance.

yeah, Curtis Mayfield wrote it and Gladys sings the hell out of it- I've always loved that song (in fact my band "covered it" once, yikes- all instrumental, no singing because, well, don't even . . . )"

Anyone rep Gladys in the 80s? Life and Visions are incredibly dope
― Heez, Monday, 5 April 2021 18:00 (three years ago) link
I only know some of the bigger singles, not the albums as such - but 80s post-disco boogie/electro r&b fit them like a glove.About Love (1980):“Landlord” is good, and both “Taste of Bitter Love” and “Bourgie’, Bourgie’” are sumptuous - all written and produced by Ashford & Simpson.A&S also did Touch with them the next year, never heard it. just listened to its biggest hit, “I Will Fight”: good, but not a patch on TOBL or BB.Visions (1983) obviously has the excellent “Save the Overtime (For Me)”. curious about the rest (tracks with Jam & Lewis, Leon Sylvers!)don’t think I know anything from Life (1985), lots of Leon Sylvers again, should correct and last but not least, All Our Love (1987):“Love Overboard” (a [Reggie & Vinnie] Calloway production) is one of my all-time favourite Gladys + Pips songs, although it starts off as a “Somebody’s Watching Me” knockoff. search the extended version if you can find it: ”S-O-S-O-S-O-S-O-S!”

listened to Touch today: with the exception of “I Will Fight” (which made me think of Billy Ocean, must be the sax), it’s firmly rooted in the 70s. it’s even got a cover of “I Will Survive” with a Try to Remember-intro.
