Has anyone heard this yet? It sounds kinda exciting. should i believe the hype. ya know, punk rock kristin and all that. I am an old-tymey fan and haven't really followed the solo stuff or the muses reunion that closely. I mean the last thing i really dug was probably University, so there ya go. but i will buy this if it is full of that old spit and vinegar that i used to love so much.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago) link

dude, you should give the Muses reunion LP a try. i dunno if it's punk rock kristen (was she ever punk?) but it certainly rocks in a Nirvana/Rush power trio stylee. Makes University seem twee by comparison.

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago) link

i know. i feel kinda bad for not buying it. it's just it had been so long, you know?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago) link

Make up for it, Scott! It's great! Kristin wuvs you!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago) link

the Muses record is great, although the songs are a little samey (tempo-wise), it has a lot of energy and rocks harder than anything she's done since House Tornado.

I heard 50 Ft. Wave were not as good live, but maybe the album will surprise?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:47 (twenty years ago) link

back in 87 or 88 before a gig she and the other muses were nice enough to do a radio i.d. for my college radio show and my hands were shaking so bad i couldn't hold my tape recorder. i just stood there and smiled like an idiot. whenever i want to cringe i think of that moment. Just an example of their effect on me at one time in my life.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:55 (twenty years ago) link

I heard this record positively smokes. I ordered it from CDbaby but it hasn't come yet. I'm going to see them in May. Should be awesome. (And I never got into Throwing Muses, so it sounds like I should pick up that reunion cd.)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:29 (twenty years ago) link

I need to order this CD and the Kristin tour-only CD available through her ebsite.

You should give Kristin solo a try, Scott. Sunny Border Blue is such a great album.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago) link

I think i only have that early e.p. on 4AD with the string arrangements. i like that a lot. (the only two belly things i ever owned were those two original 4AD e.p.s/singles and i loved those as well. i never bought the albums.)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago) link

buy the 2003 reunion album scott -- I was worried too but it's got songs that rival the first two albums. especially in the last half.

things bode well for the new band.

(Jon L), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago) link

Yikes! It's unanimous. okay, okay, i'll buy the reunion album. (sorry kristen. sorry tanya.)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

Info for non-Americans: CDbaby has - i just discovered through following the links from that fedge.net site - generous (2 minute) extracts of the new record in high quality MP3 form, so check it out! You can also download the whole thing from the 4AD site for money. UK release date for the CD has been put back to 3 May.

Sounds really tight. Even more power-trio-ish than the last Muses rekkid! 6 songs in this vein one after t'other seems plenty tho'.

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

Got it yesterday. Nearly pissed myself it's so good. The swell of the noise + whateverthefuck speakers she's using with the guitars = orgasm. Reminded me a little of Eve's Plum's first album, but much more rigorous.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:19 (twenty years ago) link

Heard a song from it off the radio last weekend and was like "woah-what's going on?! That's Kristen singing! And...she's rockin' out big time! What the hell? You go girl!" I've got it coming to me in the mail and I cannot wait.

I hate to say it but I didn't really expect to become interested in her work again. It's been awhile. Have to check out that reunion album. I didn't even know about it.

I used to have a set list on my wall for years of the Muses, signed by all 4 members before Leslie left the band. It got destroyed through no fault of my own. :( Good god in those days they were playing with The Pixies and no one knew who the hell the Pixies were...seems like a fairytale in hindsight rather than reality.

Golden Ocean, the new one. I haven't heard the debut.

Really must listen to this band, I keep forgetting to do so. Something about the name causes me to skip it over in my mind.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

It won't sway skeptics, but folks who have any endearment towards Hersh will be more than satisfied. It's totally...FOXCORE!

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Or, you know, the last Throwing Muses album. FOXCORE is pushing things just a smidgypoo - for one, the drumming on Golden Ocean beats the pants off any of the drummin' on them there thangs.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Not that drumming is a FOXCORE thing.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:55 (nineteen years ago) link

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

and yeah, the drumming is pretty slamtastic here. I never heard the 2000 Muses reunion album. Last Hersh album I heard in full was Sunny Border Blue or whatever that one was called.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:10 (nineteen years ago) link

The last Muses album = the Muses making like 50 Foot Wave as best they can (w/ small helpings of Tanya Donnelly back-up vox). David N. can't bring the ruckus as well as the 50 Ft. drummer can. Regardless, it's the stuff, & I LOVE IT! (& it wasn't 2000, was it? The album came out 2ish years ago, I thought, paired w/ Ms. Hersh going it solo via The Grotto.)

& I totally get the grunge voibe (esp. w/ the wah-wah in full effect). But calling KH & Zee Wave FOXCORE, to me, is like calling The Ramones MALL PUNK. Ah, semantics schemantics - the album kicks ass, QED.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:17 (nineteen years ago) link

They were pretty great with the Pixies this winter and the ep they put out before the record is great, though I assume it's the same songs as the album.

dan. (dan.), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I think 3 songs overlap, including "Clara Bow" (the best of the bunch, in both cases). Still worth the US$14 (est.) for Golden Ocean, tho.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Golden Ocean is, indeed, furiously essential.

This thread may be the impetus I need to finally just get that last Muses record...

What's David N doing these days??

Ooh, thank you wonderful people for reminding me that it's imperative for me to acquire Golden Ocean.

The first four or five tracks are, like, the best EP this year pretty much. It's like 'Flip Your Wig' or something, but with better production and, er, Kristin Hersh singing

FWIW, my write-up on said awesomeness is available @ P!tchf0rk - it's a restrained write-up (numerically speaking), but the words are all luv.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 22:11 (nineteen years ago) link

I think 3 songs overlap, including "Clara Bow" (the best of the bunch, in both cases). Still worth the US$14 (est.) for Golden Ocean, tho.

Apparently they've been remastered with (at least for Clara Bow) new bass parts.

Going to the Sheffield show tonight (Mon). Permanent hearing loss is eagerly anticipated. Though I'm disappointed by the lack of publicity for this tour - somebody posted on the throwingmusic board that the Liverpool show was practically deserted.

I played Golden Ocean to my boss at work last week, casually mentioned the Sheffield show, and he immediately ordered me to use the company credit card to buy tickets for everyone in the office. Further evidence of the awesomeness of Kristin's powers.

Friday, June 10th
7th St. Entry

50 Foot Wave

Doors open 8pm, we probably won't go on until around 11 or so, maybe a little before...

I didn't know you were in this band! Why didn't you tell us before you played SF????

I didn't know you were in this band! Why didn't you tell us before you played SF????

haha no i'm not in 50 Foot Wave...I was in the local Mpls opener Maps of Norway.

In any case, the show went FANTASTIC.

Ned, a guy from the Current promo dept who was there doing there said Maps of Norway reminded him of the Chameleons, and I thought of you : )

Pretty much totally full....got to meet Kristen and the bass player dude (can't remember his name) who I think was in Throwing Muses as well....very nice folks.

People seemed to like us, and were at least paying attention and standing up front, which is nice for an opening band. Had a lot of fun.

Apparently everything she does is released under a Creative Commons licence these days, downloadable in 128kbp mp3, 256 kbp mp3 or FLAC, with cover and (!!) mix parts, one's work on which can be uploaded to the so-called "rw" (read/write) section... songs for next album made available as they are recorded etc -- this is a pretty awesome way of doing stuff I think!

So I have the very first self-titled EP, which is great, and I sold "Golden Ocean" as it just didn't measure up to the EP. Is there any other 50 Ft Wave material I should consider?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 10 July 2010 17:41 (thirteen years ago) link

The hell you say Golden Ocean doesn't measure up! Anyway, uh last year I guess they put out Power + Light, which is pretty interesting, but I won't guarantee you'd like it just because you like the older stuff. It's sort of um, Jane's Addiction-influenced or something?

Love this interview -- particularly the part about when 50FW opened for the Muses and how it's totally cool with her that the respective fans could be different sets of persons. Reminded me of a thing I then had to google up from her website:

Wicked, I thought. I never know what people want to hear. Some seem to only like old Throwing Muses songs, some only like the most recent release, some people only like Sunny Border Blue, some people want unreleased material, some like me to scream real loud, some like me to whisper, some just like Your Ghost over and over and over again.

And she's OK with people only wanting "Your Ghost" over and over and over again. I love that.

Now, if someone only wants to hear "Dizzy"... ;)

So obviously there are like 50 years worth of other bands and songs that could have done this for me, but listening to Power + Light pretty much nonstop over the last few weeks just inspired me to my first fuzzbox purchase.

Just a Little Big Muff. I'm on a pretty tight budget these days. But the fields of fuzz from this album are just impossible to resist and I want to play in them too.

beachville, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

lbm is a great muff imo. some will say otherwise but it's kept a few pricier boutique muffs off my board. between the tone and sustain knobs there are a lot of great and classic sounds in there. smooth sustainy gilmour lead fuzz, massive wall of pumpkins fuzz, trashy dime store black keys fuzz etc.

there are a few distinct flavors of fuzz and iirc kh used a roland bee-ba a lot on that record. discontinued now and hard to find but if you want to explore more fuzz flavors there are now several good versions available from independent builders.

According to the guy who recorded them, she primarily used a Quadrafuzz, which is a build-your-own kinda thing.
