That bit in the beginning of "Something Good" (the U-U-U-U-Tah Saints! snippet) always sounded like Perry Farrell to me. That's not the reason I liked'em, though.

Like anyone my age who isn't lying through their teeth, my first big exposures to 'rave music' were "The Hockey Song" (R U ready 4 this?) and "Something Good" like in fiddo's case. Basically you had to like it. Indie culture didn't really exist in Canada until the internet. How organic of it all.

i think 'Love Song' samples the intro to Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces', speeds it up and uses it throughout the track. the track itself would've been better if there'd been more lyrical development.

I have not heard the "new" Utah Saints, but their first LP definitely kicks ass! It has a lot more in it than the three hit singles (and by the way, Tico Tico is right, "Believe in Me" is better than "Something Good"), ranging from electro jazz to soundtrack-like mood pieces to lush strings. And there is no euro-rapping, except a bit on the (otherwise good) industrial/dance track "I Want You.

funky music is an edwin starr sample or they actually got him in? When I saw them at glasto 2/3 yrs back I think he appeared on stage for that song (I was there but an unreliable witness)

their 'comeback' had NO pop vocal samples and was trying to be Proper

According to the sleeve, No tape was used in the making of thos album. Utah Saints constructed this album from 5000 sonic pieces. Thank you Akai samplers.

I love the way they're not afraid to do the obvious thing. I mean it's too easy to take a sample from an obscure library record or 70's funk b-side, but it takes a fair bit of nous to use AWB's pick up the pieces or the Pretenders I go to sleep and make it sound fresh. They're like a DJ Shadow who wanted to make people dance instead of just idly stroking his goatee beard while crate digging.

Warning for Tom the second album is great but they're Michael Stipe's favourite band, so much so that he appears on 4 tracks on their second album.

four months pass...

something good: i hadn't heard this in like 10 years, but i remembered it was breakbeaty, and i remember the beginning of the vocal snippet going "oooohwwwii" over and over again. i think the last time i saw it was a video projected on a wall at a college dance i snuck into when i was like 15.

i had no idea it was kate bush until 3 mins ago when i d/led it again. forehead slap!

i love how halfassed the lift is: the cloudbusting strings just plain do not go with those chords! and whatever cd this copy came from it goes into energy flash.

Whoever said that the album was his first intro to "rave music" was so OTM. I played this album fairly obsessively in my freshmen year of college.

I love Something Good. I was only about 10 when this came out, and it's probably the first electronic music I ever really liked. Also quite wonder when like f--gg I realised at about age 15 after getting heavily into Kate Bush that the sample was from Cloudbusting, which was at the time my favorite Kate Bush song. Still love sticking Something Good on compilations every now and then.

"Something Good" was my introduction to Kate Bush too. When I finally heard "Cloudbusting" I was quite relieved that I wasn't disappointed.

is there a difference between the us and uk release ?
i.e. sample issues.
have seen a cd copy of the us release in the racks locally, but was concerned that there would be differences.

The US version is the one with black cover, right? Apparently it doesn't include "Believe in Me", which doesn't make sense, because it's their best single! (Though personally I like a couple of the album tracks even more than it.) You should get the UK version with the blue cover.

I know the "chorus" of that tune is sampled from Human League's "Love Action", and the "hu uh uh hu" bit is from Crown Heights Affair's "You Gave Me Love", but according to the credits there's also a sample from Sylvester's "Do You Wanna Funk" there, and I'm not sure what it is... Is it just the "aaoowooh" shout that you can hear at 0:34?

I think it's the other way around... IIRC "Believe in Me" came out as a single before the album. But yeah, "My Mind Must Be Free" is clearly in the same mold, tho IMO it's even better, probably the best tune on the album.
