That's why so many bland bands are out there ... no wonder

People that can, do. people that can't do, teach. people that can't do that, criticize.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If people start threads on a band they have to face the fact that they will encounter people who don't like that band. If you're too sensitive or bullheaded to accept that, fine, stay away. Should that be in the FAQ I wonder?

dave q, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Yet more fuckups and underachievers" doesnt get us very far in talking about ATDI. But nor does "Gawd these guys are good", really.

Tom, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

'WERE good'

dave q, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What I actually think of ATDI: a load of energy, which is great. But the songs I've heard make too much of a virtue of changing direction midway, which kind of dilutes the rock. And the voice is mixed so high up that you can't help but hear the lyrics. And the lyrics are so not worth hearing. So I'd keep a song or two around on MP3, but I wouldn't buy it.

There Ethan another 'proper' answer so you don't feel so alone.

Tom, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

buy, how quaint

Scott, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

bollocks, i think their lyrics are clever, or decent stream of conciousness bs at least. What I like about them is their energy. Fortunately I'm entitled to my opinion

Geoff, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What I find most interesting about them is the difference between Vaya and the last album. Being forced upon Limp Bizkett's (or was it Korn) producer gave an interesting result. I agree the voice is too loud in some parts. The first song sounds way too polished for radio, nothing sticks out in it.

Sounded like an interesting approach, give a band that already plays hard and give them a producer who makes Limp Bizkett sound hard. I guess being in the middle of nowhere at the time, I missed the promotional push and found these guys on my own sweet little time which helps alot. Though I still think one of the lines should be "Drinking with Jello" and not what it actually is.

zacko, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

They're okay, I think, but for some reason I find it hard to get excited about them. I can listen through the last record and not be bored, but around halfway through I get the urge to put on a North of America record instead.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's Korn's producer (and Vanilla Ice's, for that matter) Ross Robinson. I don't believe he's had to polish Fred's turds yet.

I just find it hard to really get a handle on _Relationship..._. It's trying to be eclectic (using piano, changing speeds, throwing the split-finger for strikes), but that damn voice just runs into every song and starts spewing the clumsiest stream-of-consciousness poetic nonsense. That one song where he REPEATS that stanza about "...and the guillotine laughs again..." is quite grating. Iggy Pop's voice is the best thing on that record - he's charismatic and cheeky, while the ATDI guy screams like there's a beartrap on his bozack.

Plus, Grand Royal released the wrong song as the first single. It's the song BEFORE "One-Armed Scissor".

What really annoys me is that I WANT to like these guys, and I give _Relationship..._ second and third and fourth chances to impress me, and I get stonewalled every time.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Nitsuh - more info on North of America, please. I've heard some good stuff about them, and I wanna hear more good stuff about them.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I am not he but I shall ramble on...

North of America look like Pavement, sing like Pavement, write songs like Pavement but have at elast moved away from sounding like Pavement. Well only one of them is a physical carbon copy for SM. Formed from The Motes and The State Champs in Nova Scotia their first ep (Elements of an Incomplete Map) on Matlock records was mindfucking brilliant at points. First full length on Matlock (These Songs Are Cursed (assumed its about the fun time they had recording/producing)) was more punkier but had too many instrumentals.

Havent heard much from them in recent years since they went south, other then Walking In Great Coats on the 4 Dots compilation of Halifax/Moncton/Olympia/Bellingham bands. If you have the time and patience try finding the split 7" from The Motes/State Champs on Ant Records I think.

One of the members interned at CMJ for a bit, they write great tour diaries (if a bit windy) and can kickass at foozball when the need arises. They also have a rumoured addiction to FIFA 99.

Napster/Morpheus inclined souls search songs: Cities and Plans, Killed In The Ratings, Eliel Saarinen, Route of Sorts & What a Melee.

ps. As I tried finding out how to spell "Eliel Saarinen" on cdnow I came across the great lost classic lp "Sounds Of North American Frogs".

zacko, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

ATDI unfortunately got lumped in with the numetal crowd, when they'd in fact been plugging along the DIY American circuit for years. But they sort of brought some of it on themselves when they made a record with Limp Bizkit's producer. It's funny, Cedric & Omar's dub band (Defacto) was here over the weekend, and some guy threw a bottle and hit one in the Afro. Without pausing for a second, they all threw down their instruments and cleared the stage to go beat the shit out of the kid, who fled outside. They caught him and walloped him good. Any musicians here have to give them some props for that kind of solidarity.

Andy, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

ATDI is the band that was written about in Kickbright, and for those who would like to, you can read what Jeffrey had to say here.

My problems with ATDI are 1) they take themselves too seriously, and 2) whenever they do come up with a good song, they ruin it halfway through by switching gears and playing something entirely different. I suppose this is to prove that they are true artists (again, the pretension factor). It kills any momentum the song may have had and is completely uncalled for.

Miranda, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think the vocals sound like whiny crap. As someone or three mentioned, this cd be fixed by moving them down in the mix but that's sort of like saying Ford trucks would be better if they were Chevys.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

They are a good band. Got more aggression than most of those nu- metallers, and they couple that with tunes. They are also named after lines from a Poison song = respect.

jel, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

David: I'd go a lot lighter on the Pavement references than Zacko did, but then again he seems to know a lot more about the band than I do. I'm a pretty big fan of These Songs are Cursed, whose occasional Pavement resemblences seem less like specific Pavement moves and more like a general influence from the 3Ds/Yatsura/Insert "Band that Sounds Like Pavement" slop-rock genre. Add one part of that to a couple parts of emo (in terms of guitar tones and vocals) and hardcore (in terms of compositional and structural tricks), and "sounds like Pavement" starts to seem irrelevant. To me, anyway. . .

I think they're mostly notable as a band who can strike that sunny/sloppy pop tone and then segue effortlessly to kick-kick-scream- scream-scratch-scratch.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I seem to remember some story about Cedric having a fit when someone showed up at a show with an Afro wig. Couldn't decide whether to be impressed about that or annoyed with his humorlessness on the subject. But for my part, I think their hair eats.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I saw Pavement in 96 and you know what , that was the only time i've enjoyed listening to their music. ATDI can actually play their instruments. As for their time changes, i guess not every band is content with 4/4. Vaya was pretty good, but sooner or later most bands want good production values.

Scott, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Geez, Scott, no need to be so touchy about it. It really is okay if other people don't like them as much as you do. Honestly. :)

Questions, though: "ATDI can actually play their instruments." This doesn't exactly seem like justification for handing out a Nobel Prize, now, does it? And I've never thought of them as displaying a much greater instrumental capability than Pavement, much less any particularly amazing degree of skill. So what exactly do you mean?

Also: "As for their time changes, i guess not every band is content with 4/4." That's a straw man; no one's complained about them not playing in 4/4. The complaint was that they wind up sabotaging perfectly good moments with their obsessive need to display their ability to shift gears. And I'm inclined to agree with the above poster that this is a result of trying too hard to establish their artistry; very few of those shifts actually make structural sense within the songs themselves.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

After noticing which of the above posts were Scott's, I've just realized what a waste of time it was for me to post that.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Can I say Drive Like Jehu here, as an example of a band who managed to pull off with ease what ATDI seem to be straining very hard to achieve? DLJ rocked like bastards, but could shift gears in the middle of a track and make it sound like it was the only possible place the song could go. They also wrote better tunes. And they had a rubbish spin off band as well.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Aren't they a bit of a case of nice interviews, nice ideology, but bad songs? From what i've heard anyway, they've been all just screaming and shouting and not much else. I don't like that.

This place is full of condescending pricks, I wasn't being touchy until now. As a matter of fact they're not my favorite band, and i couldn't care less if others like them. YOU don't have to be so touchy about Pavement , not everybody likes them as much as you obviously do.

Scott, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think your chief concern right now, Scott, should be fixing your damn e-mail address, since I keep getting bounced messages when I post to this or other threads you've wanted copies of messages of. ;-) And Drive Like Jehu = gods. Was lucky enough to see them live too -- what a show.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Richard, can u you recommend a DLJ album for someone that hasn't heard much of their stuff before?

Wasn't aware of the email prob, thanks for letting me know

Scott, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Scott, their self titled album is probably the best place to start, preferably the vinyl version as it's very much a two sided LP (the first side even ends in a locked groove).

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dude, is this addressed to me? I don't recall saying ATDI was your favorite band. I don't recall saying anything much about Pavement, either, other than (a) I don't think North of America sound much like them, and (b) I don't see ATDI as being any more skilled as instrumentalists than they are.

Scott, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Andy's post was the first thing to make me laugh all day.

Ditto on Drive Like Jehu, who are postively MONSTROUS, especially live. I'm more of a "Yank Crime" (second album) man myself, but unfortunately I think it's outta print. (The perils of major labels...) Jehu were, along with MBV and the Swans, the LOUDEST band I've ever heard.

Jess, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wait, Scott, you really think of ATDI as strikingly more instrumentally accomplished than Pavement? I'm honestly asking, as it seems like a bit of a odd stance: they're both essentially rock bands, and they both play what they play about as competently and efficiently as they need to. But you seem to be framing this like it's the difference between Liz Frasier's voice and Daniel Johnston's. I get the feeling -- just a guess -- that you're putting the mental emphasis not on Pavement's ability to play their instruments, but the manner in which they chose to do so. Either that or you're talking about Gary Young's drumming in the early days. :)

All this leaving aside the fact that virtuousity seems like a non- issue here: otherwise we'd be talking about Maria Callas or Joe Satriani.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No nitsuh, in fact i started this thread as an idle discussion about one of the many bands that strike me as an oddity in the decidely (sp) boring soundscape that is modern hard rock. Not what it turned out to be (partially thanks to misinterpreting a post from dave q, which put me slightly on the defensive) And my-ex-roomate waking me up with wowee zowee every morning for too long, probably didn't help either in regards to Pavement

I can see where he's coming from, didn't this stuff about DFA dude come to light p recently? Cancelling a tour or removing a support act & finding a new one is pretty hard & I imagine the contracts they have don't allow ideological differences as legitimate reasons for reneging. And, as gross & weird as the PB are, it's a step below working with abusers/predators/etc., which I'm sure they've done too, knowingly or not.

imo Cedric & Omar have been wildly inconsistent w/r/t their relationship with their fans & their activism/ideology/how much they actually give a shit... they've pulled the most cliched rock star shit before in the past... specifically thinking of the time Cedric made The Mars Volta cancel a show at the last minute because he got into a fight with Thomas Pridgen...

xp I didn't know DFA dude had been on there for years. I mean yeah, "it's just a paycheck" is another example of him negating the righteous DIY / humanist attitude of ATDI and the first several TMV records. over the years I've learned they're not that principled when it comes to getting paid.

One of my all time favorite concerts was seeing these guys open for The Get Up Kids in the student union at University of Illinois in 1999. I was there to see GUK (in my defense it was the '90s still) and I hadn't heard a note from these guys, but they absolutely killed despite playing for probably 75 people in an awkward interior courtyard space.
