How about their cover of "Six Different Ways"?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Which tribute comp is that on? If that's the cover I have, it's really FANTASTIC.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Long December" is a great song. Will I be standing alone???

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not on a comp to my knowledge -- I think it's the mp3 I found and shot off to you a couple of years back. Some live thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

i know a guy who's a good bloke and he went to see them at Wembley Arena - really had to struggle to resist just blurting out 'please no, they're cringeingly awful' or something a lot less polite - why do Counting Crows make me so irrationally mad? far more than Travis or Coldplay ever did (ok they're not the Uk equivalent, but maybe the closest thing to an equivalent)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

on that one you will, Yancey, but I love the Van Morrison-meets-R.E.M. gibberish of "Mr. Jones" and "Angels Of The Silences." I'd put "Rain King" with that too, except for that horrid yyyeeaahhh at the end. No other singer SOUNDS quite like a liberal pothead that goes to frat parties.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

But hey, don't look at me you guys, I was raised in Northeastern Colorado, Bloomington Indiana and Penn State. I've gotta be able to tolerate this kinda stuff. At least a few singles.

Y'all fans of Live? ;)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh wait, did they do that "Mr. Jones" song? Because I've never minded them. And now I remember that cover, and yes, it was great (completely different from the one I was thinking of, though).

Live was a GREAT singles band.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

wow, the kids in northeastern colorado, bloomington indian and penn state sound just like the white kids in johannesburg

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can remember what Counting Crows sound like because of the singer's annoying voice. I can't remember Dave Matthews ever no matter how hard I try. Since nothing is worse than apathy, Dave Matthews counts as worse for me. Counting Crows are rotten, though.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

(my comment came out more controversial-sounding than i wanted it to)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Blech, Live!? That singer kind of has a similar quavering, over-earnest vocal style, too. The absolute pits, please don't make me think of them again.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

which is worse, Counting Crows and Dave Matthews Band?

can't we just stick both of 'em in a box, and send it to North Korea?

"mister jones" = one of the absolute worst nineties songs ever.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dave Matthews Band is a whole lot better, (you knew you were going to see this, didn't you Dan?) Anyway, from what I've heard from them, they are more of a song based band than jam-based, so DMB gets my vote.

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

I still think the MST episode where Mike had to turn into the most disgusting thing in the universe -- aka the Counting Crows' lead singer -- to drive away a horrible alien says it all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'm telling you i think i prefer Creed to them both, but thats kinda like preferring being lethally injected to being gassed

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

hey, Ned which episode was that? I don't think I've seen that one. I know I read about it though...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

My sense of humor is often juvenile, but:
"Mr. Jones" as veiled reference to the lead singer's penis = CLASSIC!

[Mr. Jones] and me tell each other fairy tales
Stare at the beautiful women
“She’s looking at you. Ah, no, no, she’s looking at me.”

Pass me that bottle [Mr. Jones]

[Mr. Jones] and me wanna be big big stars

etc...

I'll still take either band over Hootie.

Ryan McKay (Ryan McKay), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

hey, Ned which episode was that?

I Was a Teenage Werewolf.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Counting Crows, hands down. There are more people in C.C. than in T.D.M.B., no? One cannot deny the superior songcraft, the superior songcraft. Also, in great tradition of bands with bird-related names: Crow, the Black Crowes, Byrds, Eagles, Doves, Orioles, the Blackbyrds. And: very '90s, that gerund thing that so many movies seem to have utilized..."Feeling Minnesota," "Leaving Las Vegas." So, somehow reassuring and even in tune with era?

Anthony Miccio--NE Colorado, like Greeley? Sterling? In Denver, whole neighborhoods are taken over by crows, no other birds, maybe the occasional magpie.

Was there not an early Neil Young band called the Magpies? Or was it the Mynah Birds?

So, my vote goes to Counting Cs.

The laws of nature do not permit any band worse than the Dave Matthews Band to exist in this universe.

chubby, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Anyone know where the best P2P is to actually download some Dave matthews Band or even bootlegs as supposedly they're much better live?

Paul Rees, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

The laws of nature do not permit any band worse than the Dave Matthews Band to exist in this universe.

someone's never heard of Creed, Limp Bizkit, or Sigur Ros, apparently.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Totally shit live, but I really and truly enjoy this band. I loved "Mr. Jones," "Angels of the Silences," "Anna Begins," "American Girls," many many others. Yet my hatred of Dave Matthews knows no bounds. I baffle myself.

"How about their cover of 'Six Different Ways'?"

I shudder to contemplate how gawdawful that must be. For this crime alone, they should be violently slain in a ritualistic bloodbath to rival the goriest passage of Terry Gilliam's vangloriously bloody "Jabberwocky."

The answer to the thread? YES! Counting Crows are a bajillion times worse than the DMB. DMB -- as we have somewhat laboriously pointed out -- at least have some chops to their music. Counting Crows have absolutely *DICK* to their credit.

Counting Crows suck boobs.

Greeley, chicxulub. spent most of my elementary school years there.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

they have impeccable fashion sense with those frilly jackets and tucking your pants into desert boots.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 13 February 2003 04:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've never minded the Counting Crows and on occasion I'll take to a song of theirs (I'm definitely with Yancey on "Long December"). DMB can be more annoying at times, but I don't mind them too much either.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 13 February 2003 05:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

The use of "Mr. Jones" as his penis could be a veiled refernce to John Berryman, who was always talking to "Mr. Bones."

http://plagiarist.com/poetry/?wid=1067

Don't ask me who "Henry" is.

And as for why they're such a frustrating band, I think it's this: they made one very good album, one half good album, and then a whole lot of crap ones. It all started when they fired the short guy... he play maracas or something, I don't remember. But every album after they got rid of him was utter crap. Who knew the short guy was the key to everything good about the band?

Kenan Hebert, Thursday, 13 February 2003 06:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

four months pass...
You cannot compare Counting Crows and their horrid sub-grungisms to dave matthews band.

Ruth Gillespie (Ruth), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:22 (twenty years ago) link

I know - Crows are leagues better!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:44 (twenty years ago) link

Personally, I think the Counting Crows have only improved, what with Mr. Dreadlocks phasing out the worst bits of singing, and very little in the way of terrible singles like "Round Here," which a lot of the first album sounded like.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:48 (twenty years ago) link

Gotta agree with the DMB googlers. I hate the Counting Crows (they get a "the" whether they want it or not, calling your band something like "Counting Crows" is an aggressive and unwelcome act of high-school art classism) more than pretty much any band ever.

Lite 104.1 vs. some guy who thinks he can improve on Van Morrison's schtick = gimme dat Quiet Storm, thanks

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:49 (twenty years ago) link

Counting Crows have one very good song called "Perfect Blue Buildings". Don't really care for much else.

Dave Matthews sounds like Kermit the Frog.

earlnash, Friday, 11 July 2003 13:50 (twenty years ago) link

blaspheming Kermit offends me alot more than blaspheming Van Morrison
