I'm no expert but I like the Memphis Jug Band. But the Elevators are a different kettle of fish.

D!390 man I'm already a fan of the Elevators. I think that Shrine has an original copy of the first LP? I bought a lotta shit there last night.

Gotta say though that I prefer the string bands, like the Mississippi Sheiks. The dynamics of the jug band don't seem to have been captured as well by the recording technology of the 20s and 30s.

emmett otter's christmas jug band.

No way, man, the Riverbottom Gang band beats them!

die9o (dhadis), Thursday, 9 January 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

well, yes, the Riverbottom Gang is much better, but scarcely a jug band. They did have an impressive go-go dancing fish, though.

how amazing is this song?

so many great lines -- "put your arms around me mama like a circle 'round the sun" -- "she's a married woman, comes to see me sometimes"

amateurist, Friday, 7 August 2009 18:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's 100% classic.
Canon's Jug Stompers are another favorite of mine. I've got a 78 by the Mississippi Jook Band that is pretty awesome too.

don't know if there's actual jug on that last one tho. amtst is right up thread when he says the dynamics of the jug band weren't captured very well by the recording technology of the time.

if you believe his tombstone (not that there's necessarily any reason to) gus cannon died at 105!

amateurist, Friday, 7 August 2009 19:02 (fourteen years ago) link

ian: yeah, i get the feeling that live the bottom of these tunes was HUGE -- on record it just kind of floats in the distance

the kazoo solo on "stealin, stealin" is immortal.

amateurist, Friday, 7 August 2009 19:04 (fourteen years ago) link

oh hey amateurist, i'm gonna respond to your e-mail later today. been busy figuring out my moving situation, but will try to look for some of those titles. a lot of them i know off hand we DON'T have, but there are some we may.

if you could tell me what stuff on county you have, i'd be interested too. any eck robertson?

amateurist, Friday, 7 August 2009 19:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i believe we still have copies of the eck roberston sixties recordings!

ian, Friday, 7 August 2009 19:08 (fourteen years ago) link

We have copies of County 202, the 1963 recordings made by John Cohen, Mike Seeger & Tracy Schwarz. I'll send a list of the others--there's a doc roberts comp, a hillbillies comp, a few v/a, maybe still some skillet lickers. i'll send a list in a bit.

ian, Friday, 7 August 2009 19:10 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, email me. i'm def. interested in county 202. i have a cassette dub of that from my college days, but have never had the actual LP.
