classic because of CADDYSHACK!!

mark s, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Pretty much classic, although I don't play.

Ally C, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"A good walk spoiled" - Mark Twain. He was right.

Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

But wasn't there a film about golf starring Kevin Costner?

To watch it is tres boring, to play, I should suspect it would be entertaining for an afternoon.

jel --, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I would love to really learn how to golf. I'm already a decent putter, it's just that I can't drive a ball further than 75 yards.

Dan Perry, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

the essence of golf's spirituality = personal failure, the precondition for any good game, so in that sense it's classic. it's just a shame about the culture; it seems predicated on fratboy chop-busting and stupid comments (innate response to feelings of inadequacy?).

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I mean, if you've ever played with a group of 40-50 yr old "golfers" you definitely get that broomfucking vibe.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

John Updike loves it and writes abt it = Dud!

Andrew L, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

writing comments and equating them to dud=classic!

Ron, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

man, golf is fucking rocking man, lysergic landscapes, soothing lulling banal commentary, total wackoworld, bring on the calcavecchia dudes. look, right, you've never been at home on a sat/sun daytime, day after a big night, whether its hangover or comedown, you got something more perfect than some golf for that shit? i don't believe you, you know

gareth, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

There a breathtaking passage about golf in Rabbit Run. And Wodehouse loved it and wrote about it, which I'm sure =Dud for Andrew L but =Classic for me.

And loathe as I am to disagree with Mark S, Caddyshack's greatness is surely despite the golf stuff, not because of it. (This is also true of the qualities of Updike and Wodehouse on the subject.)

I've always associated it with appalingly-dressed middle-aged upper- middle-class white racists not letting Jews or black people into their stupid fucking clubs. How much dudder could anything get?

Crazy golf=Classic, however. Despite Andrew L injuring me once while playing it!

Definitely not the most boring spectator's sport. In fact probably my joint third favourite along with football.

shot 85 (11+) at a par 74/6500 yd course in troon today in the howling wind. jack nicklaus shot 82 here at the height of his powers in 1966 so I'm chuffed with that - especially considering it included a horrendous 6 at a par 3 (hit from bunker to bunker) and two careless doubles

There are occasional links courses in the States, sort of as a novelty -- are there many US style parkland courses in the British Isles?

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

the types of courses you tend to get are: links, parkland, heathland/moorland, hillside

imagine the parkland courses we have here aren't quite as ~lush~ but they are still green, with soily turf. much prefer links. hate hillside courses

god hates frogbs (cozen), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:40 (twelve years ago) link

my local course (inland, just out of the city) is a typical parkland course

god hates frogbs (cozen), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:42 (twelve years ago) link

there are no desert courses in britain iirc ;)

god hates frogbs (cozen), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:44 (twelve years ago) link

That would be a novelty course. It wouldn't be hard to simulate the terrain, though! Just the temperatures.

I played Lake Shastina once in far northern California, a bit north of Mount Shasta. The front was parkland, with a lot of changes in elevation, but the back nine was links-ish, very flat, few trees, and with a neverending wind blowing down from Shasta. A real test of club selection, with long holes into the wind, short holes with the wind behind you, and vice versa. A really really fun course.

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:55 (twelve years ago) link

played the work's golf day today... 3rd out of 12, playing off 12. gutted though, out in +4 (39) but junked it on the second nine carding a 47 (+12)

not fussed about winning but annoyed about shitting up my card on the back 9, especially when the back 9 was quite a bit easier all-told. lost concentration/energy or something. was playing with the CEO and getting no chat... all game-face. not ideal, sometimes you want a bit of banter to take your mind off the golf in-between shots

Henrik Stenson hacking up the 18th was horrifying/amusing y'day.

pandemic, Friday, 6 April 2012 06:37 (twelve years ago) link

i *wish* id've seen that

phil having like 50 ppl help try to find his wayward drive on 10 (i think) was a trip. good on him to get back to +2 after all that

johnny crunch, Friday, 6 April 2012 11:04 (twelve years ago) link

Stenson's 18th hole
1- 3W duck hook into trees left and short of fairway.
2- Half topped attempted 40 yard bump under and through trees back to fairway (ended up 5 yards short of fairway in woodchip spectator walkway
3-Long iron to the green topped about 120 yards
4-Straight at pin but overshoots the green maybe 10 yards
5-Chip fails to make the green
6- Putt from the fringe 6 feet beyond cup
7-Miss
8-Holed

Some of the driving y'day was just appalling, like 40-50 yards off line (I'm looking at you Phil/Tiger)
