Clausewitz is a weird lil dude who dresses in a costume of a reindeer and trick or treat dandyly in his pants on a x-mas afternoon

i read a bunch for the vollmann project actually.

his later stuff in the book on actual tactics is a bit dated, but the stuff about morale, strategy, how to define war aims, etc. holds up really well and has much wider implications in terms of setting a stage for political theory.

my otherwise quite new age-y, yoga-teaching friend T recommended Sun Tzu's Art of War to me (Debord liked it also) (haha if two ppl were ever less like each other it's Guy and T!)

I gather Sun Tzu is full of useful tips like "Make sure to have an army much bigger than your opponent - then he will surrender without fighting" or "The hawk is fast, but the rabbit can hide."

Clausewitz is one of those folks who, like Machiavelli, collects and defines basic political principles in language general enough to survive across more than one century, yet specific enough to be usefully applied by decision makers to contemporary situations. IOW, he is urgent and key to understanding how war arises and how it proceeds.
