Bab5 was smart enough to have a whole story arc start to end, so didnt need saving - it ran its course nicely.

Now Futurama on the other hand... *sniff, sigh*

I am imagining "Farscape" accepting Jesus as its Lord and Savior. It's an odd image.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

That is just baffling. I don't understand how Enterprise could arouse such interest. Even my husband, the die hard Star Trek fan, gave up on watching it a long time ago (and I think the only reason he watched it to begin with was because of the big tittied Vulcan chick). The characters were bland and stupid, as were the plots.

But didn't B5 think they were getting cancelled after season 4, which is why they wrapped up the big story and had nothing left for season 5?

SAVE ONE QUANTUM LEAP

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Based on the one episode of "Enterprise" that I saw, these fans just want to see Scott Bakula rolling around in the sand shirtless with the dude who plays his second-in-command some more.

Pfft. Doctor Who's back soon, watch that.

Jordan: blimey good point, I forgot about that.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:11 (nineteen years ago) link

So the last B5 episode is set in the future, so that it could have been stuck on the end of Season 4 instead.

Did Enterprise become "relevant", with an enormous terrorist act on earth, and the Enterprise heading off to Sort Things Out? How did that work out, then?

Star Trek TV show suffer from the same weakness that the current crop of Star Wars films suffer from.. the old show (and the first Star Trek series) were for a general audience, anybody could enjoy them. Now they cater to "fans" only, diehard nerds that worry at night whether there will be a filibuster at the XIV Intergalactic Congress... they've lost the populist appeal.

I think it's time to let "Star Trek" collect dust for about twenty years, and then let some future generation have the nostalgic revival/remakes/TV shows/etc.

Andy OTM. I actually liked a lot of the Next Generation episodes, but Deep Space 9 et al got so fanwanky I couldn't bear it.

i was not really in a trek frame of mind when this aired, and obviously the theme song was a hate crime (whoever ripped the episodes i am illegally streaming online did humanity a service by cutting out the credits sequence, which you never see any other rippers for any other show doing. it took me 13 whole episodes before i got one that still had the theme and UGH)

but since i have been watching a lot of the other shows lately i gave this one a go and it actually seems akin to the recent productions, more so than the ones that immediately preceded it. it's surprising that the main hands seem to be so responsible for it - most of the first season is written by berman and braga - because it's so much more disciplined and un-corny than the 90s shows.

i really appreciate how consistent it is with making everything seem new. a LOT of episodes of ds9 and voyager (and no doubt tng iirc) have this ginned-up way of injecting alterity and hyper-unreality into an episode through magical-unknown sci-fi mumbo jumbo and slapdash alien cultures, then wrapping it all back up or leaving it all behind with a bit too much alacrity whether or not the disposition is ultimately positive or negative. the same basic potential for that is active here but artistically it's a lot less decadently and lazily activated by the simple fact that most of the characters do not know each other, nor the species, and are sort of cautiously feeling their way forward. (on the predecessor shows it seems like a routine for encounters is scripted more like, O HAI DERE STEREOTYPED RACE ARE U AS X AS THE STEREOTYPES TELL ME I BET YOU ARE NO NEED TO GET TO KNOW U O CRAP U ARE DIFFERENT I REALLY LEARNED ABOUT OTHERS NOW, whereas here the encounters can be staged on a more genuine basis of, I DON'T KNOW YOU…. probably there's a lot of very convenient offstage work being done by the fact that the past setting and the history of the show means that writers can presume a large amount of anticipation. in a way it's like a tv version of historical fiction, the audience knowing how things turn out means you don't have to do quite the same things to prepare for how things turn out.)

a nice side effect is that scenes play out at a moderate pace and the dialogue seems less cluttered with wacky cornball trek-isms, there's more atmosphere - which is frankly surprising for a upn show from the 00s.

the corniness, staginess, weird alien species, stupid trek jargon etc. are all part of the charm of star trek. enterprise and discovery (and the chris pine kirk movies) may as well not be in the star trek universe afaiac

the andorian is really the breakout star of this, he steals every scene he's in with his mercurial paranoid aggro schtick

five months pass...

been watching enterprise, perhaps because it too is something completely useless to do during quarantine. overall it's not that bad? and plex now makes it easy to skip the song.

the captain is endlessly doing stupid things and is whiny and insecure about vulcans -- not particularly endearing, but it lends a little flavor. the vulcan lady's outfits (and/or lack of them) are absurd, but she's interesting, mysterious and gets to kick a fair bit of ass. honestly the show should be centered on her.

the engineer's accent stands in for having a character -- this is some prime catfish, idn't it cap'n? -- which i guess is star trek canon. the britishes armory officer emerges from boringness only when there are opportunities to be vaguely annoying (i mean there was actually an entire b-plot about how he has no interests or favorites and enjoys nothing more than anything else!) the doctor totally rules. the translator and pilot are agreeable sidekicks.

there have been some good episodes! (i'm only partway into s02.) the one where the doctor doesn't want to alter a society's natural development by offering a cure for a disease was good (although apparently the studio made them change the ending). the temporal time war stuff is pretty goofy but i like it, even though there's no way it will ever adequately pay off. the mysterious automated repair station one was solid.

also some really terrible episodes! the underground remnant of the first colony, ugh (humans gutted our go-befores!) the one with rene auberjonois and a plot that i'm pretty sure every single other trek series already did. the seven samurai episode is just totally paint-by-numbers and doesn't even make sense because they refused to kill the bad guys.

anyway no one is as annoying as neelix or paris or harry kim, so that's at least something to build on

t'pol is ordered to track down former vulcan covert operative bruce davison, who has allegedly gone rogue and is selling bioweapons: this was fine -- we love to see our vulcans struggle with emotions -- until the very end when, almost as a throw-away, they render all the drama and ambiguity moot by definitively revealing davison's guilt/innocence. basically a crime against storytelling

radiation from a weird star system causes everyone except t'pol to become obsessed with weird minutia until they pass out: what the actual fuck? let's remake 'the naked time' yet again only make it as boring as possible? everyone goes oh-so-gently-insane *except* the vulcan, who might at least go entertainingly insane? basically a crime against imagination

hey, the third season is actually pretty good (despite the vulcan massage storyline). things went pretty DS9

mookieproof, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 22:14 (three years ago) link

If they went in and deleted the theme song from streaming episodes, I bet Enterprise would have a much better reputation with new viewers.

finished this. after a brutal stretch in early-mid s02, the third and fourth seasons were good (although the latter occasionally ventured a bit too far into fan service)

final episode was awful tho
