two weeks pass...

Every so often I get 'mom'- type emails from this one lady. I assumed they were meant for the same person I get the odd hilarious misdirected email to but turns out it's another one. I know this because she somehow replied to ME with a two-word email, the original email of which was from "myname1" at geemail rather than "myname" (to "mom"). So somehow in replying she managed to re-type the address but without the '1' on it.
Also, the original email to "mom" was to two addresses, varying by one letter and different popular domains, both labelled "mom". It must run in the family.

Shit's getting old. Nothing like waking up to half a dozen emails from Match.com.

Hey,

We'll be meeting for a baseball practice at the old school field coming
weekend, 9am.

@Mike, don't be late again...

The rest of you, remember to do some warmups when you arrive. Can't
emphasize
the importance of warmups enough.

I hope coach Roy has a new training plan for us. Last season was not that
good.

See you this weekend.

Ron

well i wasn't going to, but i did now:

me: Long pants, why, what are you wearing?
him: same thing as you
me: Why are you asking this?

this feels like a Turing test.

I think I've noted above that I've increasingly been receiving weird subscriptions, lots of "confirm your email address" mails and attempted changes to my password. One of those weird subscriptions is from a Chicagoland car dealer, who I suspect may have had dealings with the other TB above.

pplains, Monday, 7 July 2014 16:00 (nine years ago) link

He's also an elder in his church and posts a bunch of inspirational Christian art work on his FB page. Maybe he thinks I ride around on an ass like Jesus did on Palm Sunday?

pplains, Monday, 7 July 2014 16:01 (nine years ago) link

I was getting a bunch of messages from some british swingers website or something. I feel bad that whoever tried to sign up was missing out on the messages from all these supposed horny housewives.

Hi Pleasant Plains. Here is the audiogram. Hearing aids will really help with the tinnitus. Basically all the natural sounds that occur around the same frequency of your tinnitus will then be heard, and as such “masks” the tinnitus.

ATTACHED: Copy of audiogram with Pleasant Plains' birthday. We're both Scorpios!

Those last two were sent to my non-nickname government name. Rest assured that Tyrone's hearing is fine.

oh man, you know how gmail ignores periods in your email address so mh@gmail and m.h.@gmail are the same address as far as they are concerned?

someone just signed up for okcupid using my email address, but since I use a dot and they did not, it let them

mh, Thursday, 10 July 2014 21:25 (nine years ago) link

I'm really trying to understand where the confusion is coming from.

1.) Do people just register for whatever name they want - john.smith@gmail - and then go on registering and submitting that all over the place afterward without bothering to see if they can actually use it or not?

2.) Or is Google confirming to them that the address is available, turning green and saying "Yes! You got one!" even though, as far as I can tell, they can't access that account?

It seems like people are falling for (1.), but how did people get so damn stupid all of a sudden? I have never seen so many misdirected emails. It can't be the common people's fault.

Right?

pplains, Thursday, 10 July 2014 21:35 (nine years ago) link

I think some of it is due to transcription errors when email addresses are written. Others when they're dictated to cashiers or whatever, or to friends. But otherwise, I think people really do not know their own email addresses and think they're right.

I went to sign up for a damn microsoft live acct recently (the stupid win8 apps insisted on it on my tablet). It told me I already had an account. Wuh? thinks I... I got it to reset pwd, send me the details... it was some other twit. Who now has no Microsoft Live account. sucker.

All of my misdirectors (I have about 5) appear to be Republicans, 80% are over 50, only one has a job that requires a college degree, so yes, I think they just don't know their own e-mail addresses.

so do I sign in as this guy on okc or what

mh, Friday, 11 July 2014 18:14 (nine years ago) link

I really think that people just 'make up' an address when they don't want to get on an email list or get email notifications from a site, but duh, everything requires a verification email now.

why are you even here asking, do it then start a thread, GOD

kinder, Friday, 11 July 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

Did they send you his password? That's usually the bind.

I'm getting a dude's AT&T billing statements, and I called them because I have an AT&T account too and I didn't want them to get mixed up, and they said there's nothing they can do.

If it's registered to my email, I can reset the password probably.

mh, Friday, 11 July 2014 22:30 (nine years ago) link

Sometimes yeah but usually nah. Depends if you can log in automatically from the email or if they make you enter the password manually.

festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 11 July 2014 23:11 (nine years ago) link

um, reset the password, not click through

mh, Saturday, 12 July 2014 00:13 (nine years ago) link

Like, typically a lot of sites let you send a password reset link to your email address, then click on it to set a new password. If they're wise, they as for some authenticating info, but even that is a mixed bag

okcupid, however, is so lax that you can log in by clicking a link from email, apparently. I was really confused when I just did so, assumed it'd send me to my account first, and got the message inbox of women saying "sorry, I'm only 20"

Doesn't okcupid usually default to sending you email for matches and stuff? I think this dude turned off all email notifications, so... he knows it's not his email address

information for your question, pplains
