HANNIBAL on NBC seems amazing and therefore deserves it's own thread!

i lol'd when the adagietto from Mahler's 5th started playing during their dinner date at the end. super romantic.

Oh yeah. I think one of the reasons this show works so well is that it doesn't assume that it's smarter than its audience, but assumes that its audience is really really smart and looking for fun.

Renewed for a third season! Phew!

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Friday, 9 May 2014 17:33 (nine years ago) link

Yay!! Maybe they'll get to Silence after all.

Mordy, Friday, 9 May 2014 18:32 (nine years ago) link

they'll never get to silence, they don't have the rights

balls, Friday, 9 May 2014 18:33 (nine years ago) link

Crisis was just cancelled as part of NBC's annual bloodletting so Scully can come back to Hannibal

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Friday, 9 May 2014 19:31 (nine years ago) link

She's got Hannibal and The Fall. She didn't need that dumb Crisis show anyway.

carl agatha, Friday, 9 May 2014 19:35 (nine years ago) link

well what are the chances she comes back on a plate anyway

j., Friday, 9 May 2014 19:41 (nine years ago) link

That show needs to be careful not to let Hannibal eat all the women.

carl agatha, Friday, 9 May 2014 19:41 (nine years ago) link

well assuming the season opener was not a tease for an event in a future season (lame), it seems like the state will be providing his meals pretty soon?

I really hope he isn't captured this season. Free Hannibal is a lot more interesting than caged Hannibal.

I'm finding that a lot of this show just washes over me now, I have no fucking idea what is even happening most of the time

but it's so PRETTY

i love the long rambling but soothing psychobabble - you can get lost in it

Mordy, Friday, 9 May 2014 20:24 (nine years ago) link

I think there's still the outside chance Will killed wildlife man in self-defense, stashed his organs to later serve up to Hannibal, and Freddie is hidden away somewhere. It's Will cat fishing Hannibal.

pitt's verger feels like several batman villains rolled into one+an impression of gary oldman's verger in the 'hannibal' movie. at first i was disappointed at how clownish he was but verger is supposed to be a clown, really. he's not a mastermind, he's just really rich and evil. hannibal destroys him because he finds him gauche and boring. i watched 'hannibal' the movie again and verger's revenge plot seemed almost overtly comical, especially given how easily hannibal is able to escape it. like it's about as silly as the crotch-laser in 'goldfinger' or w/e.

I obviously take this show at face value way too much (see my complete belief that Freddy was dead...y) but I think he was sorry, at least in his own way. Hannibal wanting a friend, wanting Will as a friend, has been a theme of this show from the beginning and he thinks he has a friend in Will and so he's sorry about Abigail, in a very not-sorry, "Sorry that had to happen" kind of way.

carl agatha, Sunday, 11 May 2014 05:48 (nine years ago) link

Feel like it was honest because Mischa is basically Hannibal's only genuine emotional connection to another human.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Sunday, 11 May 2014 14:53 (nine years ago) link

this business with the vergers seems to have junked up the tail end of this season

lol at alana tho: 'you're lying! you're all lying! you're lying to me, you're lying to each other!' inadvertently gaslit by their hunting party

why did will tell hannibal that he killed freddy when he didn't? this is even more confusing

welp, there goes Mason

jesus, they're showing this on network tv, aren't they?

a strange man (mh), Saturday, 17 May 2014 02:53 (nine years ago) link

oh man, I thought he actually killed him for a second. nope, Hannibal is never merciful.

a strange man (mh), Saturday, 17 May 2014 02:54 (nine years ago) link

not gonna say a name but you know how sometimes you'll see something about a pilot being picked up and you won't even read the thing but there will be a cast photo and you'll think 'o there's ____________. that's odd he's already on...oh.'

i guess what i'm saying is avoid any fall preview whatever for another week or so.

balls, Saturday, 17 May 2014 03:31 (nine years ago) link

I'm an episode behind but can I just

there's so much beautiful symmetry going on in almost every frame of this, it's seriously killing me.

also that ortolan scene was

when is michael pitt going to start being in all the movies and play a fucking batman villain or something
he's so great

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 17 May 2014 06:54 (nine years ago) link

I know who balls is talking about and I really hope that person has something in his/her contract that will allow him/her to be in both shows. :(

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 17 May 2014 19:36 (nine years ago) link

i was always kind of surprised that he does tv anyway

j., Saturday, 17 May 2014 19:49 (nine years ago) link

all this hinting is a little silly when the show only has like four full-time cast members.

I'm just being careful because I know some people out there are very salty when it comes to spoilers.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 17 May 2014 20:19 (nine years ago) link

holy shit this show. I can't get over how grotesque/gorgeous everything is. and yes, how the hell is this on network TV?!

Roz, Saturday, 17 May 2014 20:36 (nine years ago) link

also, is it weird that the only time I'm remotely terrified when watching this show is when I'm afraid of something happening to Will's dogs?

Roz, Saturday, 17 May 2014 20:41 (nine years ago) link

Ha, Roz, when I saw that only one dog was waiting I was worried about the other ones until I realized what they were probably doing.

tokyo rosemary, Saturday, 17 May 2014 20:54 (nine years ago) link

lol gotta love WInston not taking part in that mess, nope.

Roz, Saturday, 17 May 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

you know the casting change would mean bringing in someone w/ some stature

unless they're gonna late-season it already and come up with wacky new reasons why X should now be made [JOB REDACTED] or start using Y to [TASK REDACTED] or whatever just so they don't have to shell out for another name

j., Saturday, 17 May 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

Winston is one of them dogs that has become far more civilised than humanity. What a supreme episode and a great myth making performance by Pitt for the series 3 retribution attempt. I found Pitt a bit bland in BE but in this he has given a star performance.

xelab, Saturday, 17 May 2014 22:38 (nine years ago) link

i would love to read the internal documents at the network about this show. the whole autophagy scene i was sort of transfixed by the nbc logo ever-present in the corner.

j., Sunday, 18 May 2014 03:16 (nine years ago) link

but oh shit gillian anderson so perfect

j., Sunday, 18 May 2014 03:19 (nine years ago) link

Sometimes a banner will pop up on the bottom of the screen to tease the 10:00 news and it's always so jarring esp because the news anchors like pop up and smile as part of it. Meanwhile on screen there's a dude with a beehive in his head or somebody eating his own nose.
