The Gyres documentary on youtube is a classic insight into the arse end of Britpop. The band themselves have been much mocked for the gulf between their Oasis-style 'We're Best Band In the World' rhetoric and their feeble tunes, but they're just young lads trying to live out their rock 'n roll dreams and don't come across as especially obnoxious. The real villains are the London music biz wankers who reportedly signed them as a tax loss. Weird documentary, as if BBC Scotland bosses ordered an unenthusiastic team to make it. Most of the talking heads offer faint praise or politely neutral comments. Duglas T Stewart appears feeding the llamas at Glasgow Zoo, in a cute Pet Sounds homage.

Kenickie's "I Would Fix You" got a SMP parody too, though aside from the butterflies, it's played pretty straight:

Nobody expected Oasis to collaborate with Metalheadz, but you wouldn't have thought the Left Banke was a massive stretch.

if it was a british guitar act it got labelled britpop. Just like during grunge top of the pops called the spin doctors and the lemonheads grunge.

surely we can move on from this list of standards ?
― mark e, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:21 (eight years ago) link
That seems, to me, pretty much it for what has endured in terms of '90s British guitar pop. The rest of the stuff I listen to from the '90s these days seems to be electronic/dance music and US alternative rock.
― Turrican, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:27 (eight years ago) link
i realise ILM hates them now but surely any list without Oasis is somewhat skewed.
ps. glad you made the difference re electronic/dance - hence my original miffed groove !

Being from the US, I didn't get any of the negative press/attitude that seemed to hang around Dodgy, but I loved their Homegrown album. Haven't listened to it in 20yrs, but it sure was fun in 94/95.

did you know that the Bluetones have recently extended their 20th anniversary reunion tour by 18 dates due to popular demand? I'm not going because I don't like going to gigs, but I love the Bluetones
― soref, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:41 (eight years ago) link
here's what the 'tones have been up since the band broke up
Four years ago The Bluetones, one of the last surviving foot soldiers of Britpop, took their bows and went their separate ways, spitting up - we assumed - for good. Singer Morriss became a wandering troubadour, on a never-ending solo tour, acoustic in hand, playing old hits and new tunes. He’s just put out his third record, The Taste Of Mark Morris. They’ve all been very good. His brother, bassist Scott, moved to Japan to utilise a nifty skill for graphic design and animation; drummer Eds Chester is an osteopath, while guitarist Adam Devlin has carved out a new identity as a guitarist for hire (most notably with excellent Socialist supergroup Thee Cee Cees) and, despite being genuinely sweet in real life, has a neat sideline as a superbly effective twitter troll (according to his profile “BLOCKED by: @piersmorgan @DailyMailUK @KTHopkins @KayBurley @Nigel_Farage @Scientology @lancearmstrong @Joey7Barton @U2 @Sting and @gwenstefani. Twice”.)

xxpost:
Oh yeah, while Britpop undoubtedly got a lot of coverage at the time, it would be beyond stupid to even imply that it was the only thing that happened/was happening in the '90s.
Oasis were undoubtedly at their best from 1994-1996, and incredibly huge in the UK for a couple of years, but I really struggle to find the enthusiasm to listen to one of their albums in 2015. I'm pretty much the same with other bands from the time, too, even Manic Street Preachers.
