Tributes as popular Lichfield cat dies (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 11:13 (nine years ago) link

one thing I've been pondering is that I agree with Drew's point about the regressive politics of (some) BM, but does it then follow that BM fans are "cowardly" in their fandom? I don't want this to turn into another "should I listen to Burzum?" thread so tell me to STFU if you like, but how can one be a BM fan and avoid the trap of cowardice that DD alludes to? And is it fair to ascribe cowardice to a presumably disparate group of people who (as DD himself notes) are only united by their BM fandom?

Angkor Waht (Neil S), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 11:36 (nine years ago) link

cowardice could mean a number of things in this instance I'd think but plausibly it might be about the handwavey excuses that get made for far-right sentiment and/or wilful bigotry, by people who would never cut that much slack to indierock bands or w/e

DD: I wanted some kind of spoken word intro with ominous sound effects, like the way atmospheric black metal records begin. In fact, I made a mix that's just 45 minutes of intros.

I WANT TO HEAR THIS.

both the 45-minute black metal intro mix, and also the new record. i absolutely adored the Do You Want New Wave album. i think it was one of the last CDs i bought before i switched over to LPs, and it was in nonstop rotation in my car's CD player until i sold the vehicle

go to evangelical agonizing eternal hell (Karl Malone), Thursday, 29 May 2014 18:11 (nine years ago) link

this is on rotation atm. a part-time metal fan so only knew some of the songs being covered but it's detailed, humorous and makes the language of torment and hell quite touching in places, suspended outside its complementary musical context. it's fun!

also I'm a sucker for the Snap! interpellation.

Fizzles, Thursday, 19 June 2014 07:26 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I started listening this morning too. Also wish I knew more of the originals, but it's a fun listen so far all the same.

really love this record.

akm, Friday, 20 June 2014 18:17 (nine years ago) link

haven't spent much time w this, but i think i like the concept more than the music per se. which has been the case since do you party?, tbh. it's a really good concept, so i'm not damning quite so harshly as my faint praise might suggest, but i am a bit disappointed. will give it some time to sink in though...

Dream lineup, but unlike Matmos I don't think SPT's gonna make it to Wellington. What's the live setup like?

etc, Sunday, 5 October 2014 13:16 (nine years ago) link

drew on laptop and mic, a gentleman whose name i did not catch vogueing in corpsepaint, screaming (nicely) in audience members' faces, thunderous beats. it sounded great and looked great. like the whole why do the heathen rage project it could go horribly wrong in lesser hands but my wife and i (and the whole club) were floored.

also, surprise coil cover! "the anal staircase."

A new Soft Pink Truth album is on the way! Shall We Go On Sinning So That Grace May Increase?

Hey! I have some news! Time to put SxPxTx into SuPer Tuesday! Thanks to the help of many friends, I'm now able to announce a NEW album by The Soft Pink Truth. "Shall We Go On Sinning So That Grace May Increase?" will come out on Thrill Jockey records on May 1st. The album is two sidelong 22 minute pieces and is very different from past SPT music; you can hear an element here: https://thesoftpinktruth.bandcamp.com/track/we
The artwork and design is by Robert Beatty; the mastering was done by Heba Kadry; the music features playing and/or singing from many people who are dear to me: M.C. Schmidt, Angel Deradoorian, Sarah Hennies, Jana Hunter, Colin Self, Koye Berry, Andrew Bernstein, John Berndt, and David Serotte all contributed and helped make it what it is. I'm so grateful to everyone who helped me to do this.

^^ as per Dr3w on fb.

took my breath away several times but none moreso than the transition from 'that' into 'grace'

devvvine, Monday, 4 May 2020 13:59 (three years ago) link

Just went to check the tracklist to see which transition it was that perked my ears up, but turns it was the exact same spot on the album: when the piano first comes in on Grace. Sublime.

(One question: if your conceit is that each track is named using one word from your 10-word title, then why only include 9 tracks on the album?)

enochroot, Monday, 4 May 2020 14:42 (three years ago) link

yes yr right it's a lil way into grace in fact

Love this, very different-sounding to the last album but similiar in its unabashed prettiness. Something of a Luomo meets Kalabrese vibe.
