I get very uncomfortable just looking at these fuckers. It's weird and I don't know why. I don't have a strong feeling toward trees, rocks or buildings in the same way.

But shit like this ... ughhh

Feeling you on the discomfort and not knowing why. I was fascinated/terrified by renderings of Colossus of Rhodes in a book I had when I was little.

I don't think this one was mentioned upthread, but the Vulcan statue in Birmingham, Alabama is still a weird/scary sighting for me when I travel through the south:

(perspective on that photo makes it look like it's blocking the door, but it's set a ways from the front of that building)

I could just about deal with that one since she looks dead and not ready to eat me.

Tangentially I'm reminded of a photo project done in HK documenting the giant advertisements

The most striking feature, however, is unarguably the towering jolly giant, Gnome Chomsky. He stands invitingly on the hill facing the highway, challenging one and all to come enjoy the scenery, visit the farm, and play a round or two of mini golf.

*Update (as of Aug 2011) Chomsky no longer holds the Guinness World Record. Reiman Gardens in Iowa is home to a Gnome that stands 15 feet tall. Although there is a Gnome in Poland who towers at 18 ft, but unlike Chomsky and the Reiman Gardens' gnome, theirs is made of fiberglass.

Anyone mentioned the giant breastfeeding statue of Nami island South Korea? Some people find it disturbing.

Saw "The Awakening" posted by NickB upthread irl! It was moved from where it used to be (the corner of a far-out park in DC that doesn't get much foot traffic) to the center area of an outdoor mall developed a few miles south of DC (called the Nat'l Harbor). The context makes it all the more unsettling; children now play on it:
