It's a good time.

ok, it is perhaps not a good design feature when like 3/5ths of a ludicrously drawn-out fetch quest can be completed at basically noob levels while the third act of same convoluted fetch quest involves walking up on the territory of some lvl 30 giant palette-swapped bullshit from hell
"Alpha Worgen" is on my shit list. As is my habit of not saving very often because it's not like any battles in the first 20 hours or so other than Mr. Optional Demon Wall put you in any real danger of a party wipe.

also how did it take me 22 hours to figure out that Balthier is gay?
― El Tomboto, Monday, 29 September 2008 22:29 (fifteen years ago) link
Save early, save often. I am consistently surprised how 3+ typical wondering-the-woods mobs are able to all but wipe my party while I can stick it out and whittle down far more terrifying-looking boss fuckers. The timing and speed aspects of this game are more important than in any other RPG I've ever played, I think, even the tactical sort.
― El Tomboto, Monday, 13 October 2008 04:13 (fifteen years ago) link
You know it's all well and good to be able to experience a lot of the intriguing gameplay elements of a MMORPG without having to deal with... other... people... but frankly this Basch kid plays the offensive tackle position like a fucking, I don't know, he's a slice of fucking Emmentaler is what he is. Sure he can dish it out but I just want him to once in a while you know STEP IN FRONT OF THE FAT TOAD THING THAT IS SLAPPING ME AROUND.

lol i have never played this game, but i'm a fan of this ^^ post
― Lingbert, Friday, 17 October 2008 06:25 (fifteen years ago) link
Seriously that is probably my weirdest moment ever in a game. After they scattered, it was like 15 minutes of running around, all my ranged weapon experts in the party, two casters and Mr. Gay Gunslinger chasing these poor little vegetable-headed bastards around a giant arena, getting coated in eldritch pollen and subjected to midget headbutts. Then shooting the perpetrators in the back repeatedly as they tried to regroup. I give them credit for putting up a fight. I also take that credit away for being dumb enough for pissing off a man with a golden shotgun. BLAM!! oof ow uhhh I have been magical-retarded oof ugh BLAM!! BLAM!!

don't you hate final fantasy games? or am i thinking of someone else?
― Lingbert, Saturday, 18 October 2008 06:25 (fifteen years ago) link
no I basically do hate them but on this one they appear to have remembered the salt
― TOMBOT, Saturday, 18 October 2008 06:27 (fifteen years ago) link
the last one i played was FFX. i finished it, but i think it permanently ruined FF games for me because i have no desire to play new ones or revisit old ones. like were they always that cheesy and i just remember them better? maybe did the limitations of the earlier systems force them to minimize their cheesiest aspects and tendencies, but once they had more ability to "flesh out" the games, they mostly just unleashed all the garbage that was lurking underneath all along?
or something else
― Lingbert, Saturday, 18 October 2008 06:32 (fifteen years ago) link
this one is actually not all that cheesy. I'm still waiting for the whole thing to fall apart at the end, but for nearly 70 hours I've been pretty happy. Got my first "optional" esper last night, ran into him by accident, thought about running away, and used up like 90+ Phoenix Downs whittling away at the bastard. I HATE flying creatures. HATE them.

(I also ran into EXODUS THE JUDGE SAL (wtf does that mean) by accident, that turned out horribly.)

ok I'm at the endgame and am now actually in the process of being really anal about trying to complete the hunts and get as much of the best gear as possible (I fucked up the zodiac spear, oh well, that's on the bullshit easter egg tip anyway, thanks free strategy guide). Currently, however, I haven't found a good place to powerlevel past 60 or so, even with embroidered tippets*, so I might burn out on this soon and just kill that prog metal looking fucko and be done with it.
I'm a little concerned that the level of innovation and jaw-droppingly excellent interface design (like wtf this is a japanese rpg menus are supposed to be retarded) is going to make the next couple of games on my plate somewhat disappointing.
To reiterate, based on FF installments previous, I'm frankly amazed at how much I haven't minded and even enjoyed the cast in this one. It kinda sucked when Reddas had to off himself (phil lamarr = still wanted him to do the hermes futurama voice)
*in Ivalice, the gayer the accoutrement, the greater the benefits apparently, although this is kind of a series staple right in there with fuking airships at this point I guess. That guy's wearing a little hood with kitty ears on top! I don't want to mess with him! That guy with the tuff looking belt, though, my grandma could fuck his shit up**. You kick some big ghoulish undead monster's ass and there's a pink candy necklace in its stash, WHOOO PINK CANDY NECKLACE TRY MESSING WITH ME NOW HIGHLANDER MAN

a coupla points for later elaboration
1. when you try to stack actions in a battle with several opponents (by several I mean >3 ha ha) the turn based nature of the battle system becomes a little bit frustrating. step outside your gambits with two of your characters and CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE FOUND THE EASTER EGG WHEREIN FINAL FANTASY DECIDES TO ACT LIKE WINDOWS AND SIT THERE FOR FIVE MINUTES WHILE IT THINKS ABOUT WHAT YOU JUST TOLD IT TO DO. Genuinely the most frustrating moment in a game I've had in a long, long, long fucking time. This is a fucking RPG. It should not present me with lag problems.
2. Do not attempt the pharos subterra just because you can kill pylraster. jesus fucking christ on a god damned popsicle stick those fucking toads and their little magical pony friends wiped me twice before I figured out lv66 just wasn't good enough. what in god's name.
3. The gun is good. I don't know if the penis is evil but the gun is good.
― TOMBOT, Sunday, 16 November 2008 06:36 (fifteen years ago) link
oh and 4. if you're going to put in some minigames, try to make the interface at least remotely approachable. the fishing and the footrace game in this are about as atrocious as the problem described in 1, above.

also but fuck me is there a lot of Star Wars in this game, either directly or thru a co-mingling of sources

Just played the first Dr Cid boss fight, and was struck by how good the fight music was.
Then i remembered that it sounds almost like the battle overture from Wrath of Khan, which was some of the greatest fight music evah.

well i'm deeply loving persona 4 and want to line up another one of these jrpg nonsense games but can't decide if this is going to be horribly over-generic or not.
i have actually thought about buying ffx and ffx-2 as well but that would totally about scratching an itch i really ought not to bother with as opposed to playing games that are 'fun' or 'interesting' or that i 'enjoy'

i really really dug the combat in this game and the way that dungeons sorta "felt." a lot more like an MMO but instead of friends playing, you get peopel you cna program to not suck.

Surprisingly, yes. The fact that each character doesn't have the usual jrpg single-weapon-class slot ilwas a great idea. I wish they had a more pcrpg way of tracking all the miniquests you get involved with
