^^^ My Twitter wallpaper! Love the call-and-response between Corin and Carrie and Janet, one of their most fun and playful moments.
Still smh @ it beating out "Little Mouth" though.
XP YESSS TARFUMES.

I had the realization the other day that "Step Aside" is what High Time-era MC5 would've sounded like if they'd been female.

first track i heard from one beat, i can remember driving around in the country outside of athens listening to wuog when it was still on the air and this just coming on out of nowhere and rocking my fucking world. easily my fave s-k in that pop anthem mode. RIGHTEOUS.

Actually thinking about the great moments in "Step Aside" -- the C&R sections, the whoo-ooh-oohs, the na-na-na-na-nana nanana outro -- makes me not so butthurd.

Also, the horn parts seem to echo/mimic those in the Who's "The Real Me."

I'll take that as an endorsement to listen to the MC5.

OK, I'll say it... TOO LOW.
"Step Aside" has appeared on many mix tapes.

this fell off my ballot towards the very end. it was great live, and i adore the crescendo of "all - my - life - i've - WAIT - ed" into the climactic holler "LOOOOOOOOOVE!"
― reddening, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:22 (ten years ago) link
That ping ping guitar riff at the heart of "A Quarter to Three," the Cure-esque solo, the melodica -- it's a perfect last song.

^^ someone pointed out earlier that they don't usually fade-out at the end of their songs, but they do it here and it's a great choice.
― reddening, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:45 (ten years ago) link
Incidentally "A Quarter To Three" was the last minute addition to my ballot when I was informed that "Let's Call It Love" and "Night Light" were being counted as one song and I had an extra spot.

i've come to appreciate how Let's Call It Love goes on way too long, if only because it creates a positively monumental lead-in to that magic juncture where it finally catches focus and segues into Night Light.

i'm not sure i'll ever get used to it. i'm all 'good for her!' and happy she's getting paid and it beats blogging for npr but even if i'm just watching portlandia (nevermind stuff like the amex commercial) every now and then my head will go 'wtf that's carrie brownstein'. i'm going thru a similar thing now w/ that fucking apple commercial w/ 'gigantic' - i lolled heartily the first time, i was happy that kim in particular was gettting paid, i rolled my eyes at the idea of outrage over an indie song in a commercial at this late a date, and yet now more and more frequently a part of me that is getting louder and louder thinks 'there is something about this specifically that is very weird and very wrong'.
― balls, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 10:53 (ten years ago) link
With the "Gigantic" ad, I mostly thought of my high school friends in 1989 who gave me shit for going to see squaresville corporate rock sellouts the Who on their cash-grab reunion tour, while insisting their faves the Pixies (who I dug too) would never fall into any of those sellouty rock-star traps.

OOOOH TOO LOW for "Call the Doctor" -- I had it at #2, and it's my #2 by a large margin. I'd never heard anything like it before -- not with lyrics about socialization, the weird vocal interplay, the vibrato in the lead singer's voice -- and then the explosion during the bridge -- Corin wailing, Carrie screaming -- made me an instant fan. So powerful.
― Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 17:47 (ten years ago) link
When I was getting into them I really didn't like the Call the Doctor album that much at all, the only song that stuck was the title track. The whole album has grown on me a lot but that song in particular has become one of my favourite songs of theirs. Such a brilliant opener.
― Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 17:50 (ten years ago) link
"Dance Song '97" and its roller rink organ warmed to the band after the initial shock.

I kind of always forget about Dance 97 as it's surrounded by such amazing songs that overshadow it a little bit.

it doesn't fit in on dmo when i think about what dmo is about, but if i go track by track its one of my favorites.
bouncy sk is the best, and i love the undercurrent of compulsion and dread. it has a "dance dance dance to the radio" quality.
