Yeah, totally. I love the way the distortion builds.

Interesting that they went with a new version for the video. Judging by the release date, I guess it was the last thing they recorded.

yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh finally catching up with this for a minute! Hard to add much but the Woods tracks appearing so far make me feel bad about shortchanging that record in my ballot, I fucking loved it when it came out. Maybe I just overplayed the thing.

Cut "What's Mine Is Yours" last-minute from my ballot - I do think it's one of the strongest cuts on the album but somehow when it came voting time, the big awesome guitar solo breakdown thing seemed like dead weight rather than an epic move for texture and space on their most Zep-ish LP.

"Rollercoaster" is awesome, love how busy and thundering and pounding it gets, with the ooh-ooh rockin' rollercoaster stuff gliding up through the mix. Would have made my ballot probably except, as with a lot of Woods tracks, it sounded way shittier and noisier and distorted on headphones from Spotify than it ever did on LP or in concert.

"Modern Girl" ditto actually - listening to the video version, as rough as it is, it sounds like such a Sleater-Kinney song and the moments that always had the most heart (the chorus, the "I DIDN'T BUY NOTHIN'!") come through that much clearer. Also I always loved the donut line.

Too low

devvvine, Sunday, 27 April 2014 19:17 (ten years ago) link

lol @ the "It's Enough" screenshot. Early on, I was thrown by the sax on it -- riot grrrl with horns? So not punk! But really adds some texture to your usual awesome Corin wailing.

"Ironclad" and "Youth Decay" were the two RAWK ones from All Hands that I was choosing between, went with the former probably because it's a little more top-to-bottom awesome.

1:06 to 1:32 of Pompeii is just, I don't know how to not get all hyperbolic saying this, but it was one of the last times where I was just floored by a rock song.

yeah that's one of the few so far that i voted for. right now the song that i'm like wow why didn't i vote for this is "Was It A Lie?"

Anonymous and Size of Our Love were last-minute cuts from my ballot. I voted for "Sympathy," my favorite song off One Beat and one of their most affecting.

my ballot was prejudiced towards the barn-burners (i put "the fox" high in my ballot for the giddiness of "i'll go / i'll go / and there's NO LOOKING BACK!"), but "the size of our love" was so important to me at one point. re-listening evokes a total sense-memory of when i first heard it (first year of college, sitting on the grass outside the library, achingly and fruitlessly in love).

"sympathy" was also on my ballot; i love the combo of corin's concrete despair and and carrie's imagistic strut.

Back in early days of the voting thread I brought up what I felt could be this poll's "Sway", a song that had been on all the initial ballots. It didn't keep up the momentum, but here 'tis:

Yeah, seriously.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 28 April 2014 20:45 (ten years ago) link

Wow, seriously didn't expect that to even make the poll, let alone the top half. I mean, I love every song on THR, but I definitely consider "The End of You" to be one of its lesser tracks.

Still, surprises like that are making me love this poll

good and relaxing like akon dont matter (intheblanks), Monday, 28 April 2014 20:59 (ten years ago) link

my brain can't even compute how someone wouldn't think this is one of S-K's FIFTY best songs.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 April 2014 21:10 (ten years ago) link

Back in early days of the voting thread I brought up what I felt could be this poll's "Sway", a song that had been on all the initial ballots.

Ha, I was wondering what song it was that made all the (early) ballots! This was my #11, but it's always been a THR highlight for me. Love the hunkering down/us-against-the-world sentiment (magnified by the ferocious music).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 28 April 2014 21:10 (ten years ago) link

In my defense S-K has tons of great songs

good and relaxing like akon dont matter (intheblanks), Monday, 28 April 2014 21:19 (ten years ago) link

It's true, but imo almost all of them came between 1996-2000.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 April 2014 21:25 (ten years ago) link

Kinda surprised about "Light Rail Coyote"! I seem to recall that it somehow got painted with the same ambivalence of "Combat Rock" when One Beat came out.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Monday, 28 April 2014 21:26 (ten years ago) link

No way. Light Rail Coyote rules!!!

kornrulez6969, Monday, 28 April 2014 21:28 (ten years ago) link

can't believe i didn't vote for anonymous.

entertain and the fox are as not-fun as i remember, ditto light-rail coyote. i guess they're all part of a late-phase "rawk" sk sound that's technically pretty intricate, but feels sort of plodding
