The Spells shoulda made it!

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Thursday, 24 April 2014 00:51 (nine years ago) link

"June n July" and The Spells' "The Age of Backwards" were both bubbling under. Excuse 17 earned several votes, but "The Drop Dead Look" was easily the most popular of their seven tracks that earned votes.

I had CTD @ #2. Wouldn't have thought to do it prior to the poll, but I did my tracks list first and saw I had shortlisted practically the whole thing.

THR #2, DMO #1? /wishful thinking

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Thursday, 24 April 2014 19:39 (nine years ago) link

no first place votes for call the doctor is kinda insane (esp w/ 3 #1s for the freaking woods)

balls, Thursday, 24 April 2014 19:45 (nine years ago) link

CTD was like a perennial #2/3 on most ballots, which does add up.

Just listened to The Woods again yesterday, and the mastering doesn't bug me as much anymore. Also, probably their best collection of songs, and by far their most unhinged performances.

For awhile DMR & THR were neck and neck for #1, but then the former got like 5 individual #1's in row, which sealed that one.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:10 (nine years ago) link

Also stoked to see the hot rock so high. Definitely their most critically underappreciated record in its day, and to me their crowning achievement.

After that, there's a precipitous drop off in points, with entries for the debut coming next, then Heavens To Betsy, the two Corin albums, Cadallaca, and Wild Flag.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:22 (nine years ago) link

Aw, I should've voted for albums. I don't know if it would've made a difference in the end, but AHOTBO would've been my #1.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:22 (nine years ago) link

THR was the only one of their post-S/T records to miss the P&J top 10, and if Wikipedia is to be believed, THR sold substantially less than each of their post-CTD albums.

Seems like THR was a backlash moment in some cases. I remember a review in Alternative Press in which the album got whatever the middle rating was on the scale they were using at the time, with the writer making points about how it wasn't anything they hadn't done as good or better before, and how it seemed like they were putting more effort into side projects then they should. THR was my intro to the band (bought it a few weeks after release) and I just couldn't get my head around how anyone could perceive it as a lackluster release.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

I was super excited to hear it, as I was already in love with Dig Me Out, and I bought THR on release day. It exceeded my expectations, and my expectations were that they'd introduce more tension, drama, and mystery into their now-established formula, and that they'd also fuck with that formula.

I always suspected the haters just wanted DMO II.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:52 (nine years ago) link

THR was definitely not as universally loved as Dig Me Out or Call The Doctor.

X-post...Dig Me Out 2 would be great. I'm one of those fans.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:55 (nine years ago) link

If anything, the problem with The Hot Rock was the sequencing. After the alltime opener, it got a little tough going. Picked up on side 2, where DMO and CTD stumbled.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

The Hot Rock was the only album (besides the first) that missed the top 10 of Pazz & Jop, and was also their lowest selling album (besides the first). and it's always been by far my favorite, so it's gratifying to see that it's got a lot of support here.

some dude, Thursday, 24 April 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

I'm gonna do the "Worst/Least Loved Songs" run now, and I'll fire up the Tracks Rollout tomorrow.

oh shit! if anyone gets these, please report back with how they sound

compassionate sports, electronic father (reddening), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 01:40 (nine years ago) link

The Chainsaw-era tracks sounds less tinny (presumably a problem from the original mastering), and the early KRS stuff has a skosh more presence. I don't know what they could do to the 2000-up stuff, unless it's possible to do The Woods: Naked and have de-Friedman'd mix.

I Don't Wanna Ice Bucket With You (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 04:09 (nine years ago) link

If that "Entertain" sample is any indication, it sounds pretty much the same, I think.

Hakeem Olajuwon Howard (Leee), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 16:51 (nine years ago) link

Yeah always thought these albums sounded fine.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 20:10 (nine years ago) link

Well, what can you really do to 'remaster' something from the last 15 or so years? I can see the need to spruce up the Chainsaw albums, as they probably didn't get the attention they needed at the time, and of course getting everything back out on vinyl should a big deal for people whom that would be a big deal.

one headphone listen to s/t and CTD flac and they sound so alive; and i noticed some tiny subtle little guitar parts that i hadn't noticed before. haven't delved into the rest yet

Tom Waits for no one (outdoor_miner), Friday, 5 September 2014 13:47 (nine years ago) link

having fun listening and trying to suss differences haven't done any a/b yet. i don't have engineer ears by any means; using a nice nad amp and a pair of sony mdr-7506 phones. ctd tunes seem to have more "bite". definitely a better mix in my mind when checking closely. just now digging into DMO and i think Janet's sound (noticing the snare esp) has more midrange (maybe it's in my mind). but it's def. a improvement overall. subtle for sure and for fans listening very closely. i reckon as i go on differences will be less obvious but who the hell knows. curious to get to the woods and see if i am able to stand more volume. typically listen to that one on the quiet side since it's SO frikken loudly mastered on the original. the originals do sound "fine" but the best band of the 1990's/early lost decayed (decade) deserves special treatment, wot
