three months pass...

Toward the end of the play’s run at Steppenwolf, Lonergan flew to Chicago to check in on his work. After the show, Cera and Gevinson joined him for dinner. “It’s just so refreshing to see a pretty young woman order cheese,” Lonergan says of Tavi. Over all that cheese, Lonergan and Gevinson got into an argument about Beyoncé that Cera summed up as, Is Beyoncé the standard-bearer for mediocrity (Lonergan) or an important cultural figure (Gevinson)? “She likes to argue and so do I,” says Lonergan, “and she’s really smart and so am I, so you end up having these discussions about interesting and broad-ranging topics. But then I find it very charming that she’ll go from mentioning a talk she gave in Australia at 16 to complaining about ‘Why does my dad care if I go to bed late?’ Or how annoying it is that her best friend is in Costa Rica and she can’t text her.”

Ha. Lonergan was in the audience at the performance I saw. He looked sort of lonely. Love his work, though.

Love his work, though I respect & admire Tavi more, obv.

Several years ago we spoke with Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist and he said that because of your age – you were about 14 at the time – “it is like a five-year old Michael Jackson singing about love – to him they are just words.”

That young people don’t have valid thoughts about the world because they haven’t been alive long enough is sadly a very popular and, frankly, unoriginal sentiment. When I think about that time, I was just responding to the world around me. And I was perceptive enough that I felt like I could make connections to things in my life. I don’t think it was abstract. And I am basically skeptical of any adults who have those kinds of things to say about young people because it seems to always very transparently stem from fear and insecurity. And to be honest, the fact that he’s shorter than me in real life.

the sartorialist dude is a fucking dipshit but the idea that youth voices are not heard with piercing clarity across cultural life is kinda ridiculous

adam, Thursday, 21 May 2015 14:28 (eight years ago) link

certain youth voices i should say

adam, Thursday, 21 May 2015 15:03 (eight years ago) link

being heard and being taken seriously are different things tho which seems to me what tavi was getting at

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 21 May 2015 15:08 (eight years ago) link

isn't the desire to be taken seriously inherently adolescent tho? that is, the frustration of feeling misunderstood or marginalized (be it exurban juggalo or precocious blogger) is an animating force at that point. then you grow up and realize nothing matters and stop giving a fuck (or you get tiny suits and a camera and give condescending interviews to other tiny suited ppl).

adam, Thursday, 21 May 2015 15:17 (eight years ago) link

adolescence is a 20th century fiction
