funny because as a french who was kid in the 70s/80s, I find her mostly horrible.and even for the 60s part, she must be my least favorite french singer !

She is a terrible singer. I think Anglophones like her for her kitschy charm, but I was brought up in an Anglo-French household so her songs were always being referenced or sung by some family member. When I told people my name was Charles, they'd often start singing "Sacre Charlemagne" for some reason. "Bonsoir John John" was a lullaby in our house, I only recently discovered the song was actually France's tribute to JFK which adds an extra poignancy to it for me.

She's not a great singer at all, but that's part of the charm.

I love the bit in the Gainsbourg biopic where she sings "Baby Pop" acappella and it's suitably shrill and out of tune. They picked some great actors for that film.

This thread popping up inspired me to put the album I recommended Marco Damiani at the top of the thread on Spotify, and I've just noticed it's got the exact same track twice - track 10 and 12 are both Les Papillons Noirs by Michele Arnaud.

France Gall is so awful she made me hate Michel Berger for a long time which is a shame because the guy had some very good tunes.message personnel of course :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PK5c6ntpm8but also : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3UYB9sMQDo

Ha! Michel Berger made me hate him for many years for insisting on writing songs for FG and basically turning her into dross overnight.

ahah. but I think she was already !but their songs together are definitely horrible...they're like a poor man's gainsbourg/birkin.

also this !!! lol
«Un jour, on a demandé à Gainsbourg s’il avait quelqu’un de moins de 30 ans à statufier et il a dit quelque chose qui m’a bouleversée : ce serait France Gall. Ce serait une immense statue en sucre d’orge et tous les enfants viendraient lui lécher les doigts», s’émouvait France Gall dans un entretien de 1968.

People itt saying she was a bad singer are probably right, but it worked somehow for me. I always thought she did the best version of 'Monopolis' :
