warner bros took down the youtube of "smile" that the band uploaded themselves for some reason, idk

I just had a geek moment and realized that the way the special red edition of White Pony displays the track times but not the titles on the cover is a nod to the packaging of Hum's Downward Is Heavenward.
Anyway I also think the s/t record is underrated, so many jams and probably their two best guitar-free tracks.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 15 April 2014 18:45 (ten years ago) link
i still think "minerva" is their best single. an incredible summary of their aesthetic
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 18:56 (ten years ago) link
Yesss. The production on that album and that song in particular is so ludicrously expansive (expensive).

every few months i'll put on koi no yokan and it's really one of the best records to come out in the last few years and i think i'm really almost 100 percent sure it's better than white pony

Turmoil in the band as guitarist Stephen Carpenter admits to not liking the direction new album Gore took. Good sign, I think, as he also hated White Pony. Although, I would like to eventually hear a Deftones record directed by Stephen.

can't believe divorcedalcoholicloser isn't on ilx any more
― Szechuan TV (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:21 (eight years ago) link
i have time for this band but the idea that the honourable gentleman divorcealcoholicloser flouts in the op, which ive heard repeated often, that they are lumped into nu-metal because of "who they hung out with when they first started" is just wrong: they have rap metal songs, there are a number of sonic similarities to other bad and hated nu-metal peers in their music, espesh in the first two albums, i saw them tour with linkin park and taproot 13 years after they formed the band. just embrace the fact that you like a nu-metal band ffs.
― uncle tenderlegdrop (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:29 (eight years ago) link
saying "they have rap metal songs" is p misleading though, they've recorded precisely zero of those in the last 15 years
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:45 (eight years ago) link
doesn't mean it didn't happen
― uncle tenderlegdrop (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:47 (eight years ago) link
perfectly fine with considering them the best possible nu-metal band
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 22:01 (eight years ago) link
their music is still wayyy groove-oriented
is REM rap rock because they did a song with KRS One

I would love for them to do one of those Rank Your Records columns but I worry they'd break up
In other news even in shitty-rip form this sounds really really good

i spend most of my life listening to deftones albums tho
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 18:22 (eight years ago) link
only listened to it once, but structurally sounds pretty plain..verse, chorus, bridge, etc.
― sunlick databait extremer, Sunday, 3 April 2016 19:31 (eight years ago) link
a lot of deftones songs obey that. but idk "xenon" is like all chorus
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 19:33 (eight years ago) link
god "phantom bride" is so good
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 19:44 (eight years ago) link
the entire closing suite of "gore"/"phantom bride"/"rubicon" rivals "passenger"/"change"/"pink maggit" imo
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 19:52 (eight years ago) link
yeah "Rubicon" is a great closer. Looking forward to a proper version of this.
