oh got it

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 18:30 (ten years ago) link

I just had a geek moment and realized that the way the special red edition of White Pony displays the track times but not the titles on the cover is a nod to the packaging of Hum's Downward Is Heavenward.

Anyway I also think the s/t record is underrated, so many jams and probably their two best guitar-free tracks.

Simon H., Tuesday, 15 April 2014 18:45 (ten years ago) link

i still think "minerva" is their best single. an incredible summary of their aesthetic

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 18:56 (ten years ago) link

Yesss. The production on that album and that song in particular is so ludicrously expansive (expensive).

eight months pass...

every few months i'll put on koi no yokan and it's really one of the best records to come out in the last few years and i think i'm really almost 100 percent sure it's better than white pony

one month passes...

Turmoil in the band as guitarist Stephen Carpenter admits to not liking the direction new album Gore took. Good sign, I think, as he also hated White Pony. Although, I would like to eventually hear a Deftones record directed by Stephen.

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 18:06 (eight years ago) link

why is everyone too cool for deftones

sunlick databait extremer, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 20:33 (eight years ago) link

I am emphatically not too cool for deftones

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 20:47 (eight years ago) link

more like deaftones

ienjoyhotdogs, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:11 (eight years ago) link

can't believe divorcedalcoholicloser isn't on ilx any more

Szechuan TV (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:21 (eight years ago) link

i have time for this band but the idea that the honourable gentleman divorcealcoholicloser flouts in the op, which ive heard repeated often, that they are lumped into nu-metal because of "who they hung out with when they first started" is just wrong: they have rap metal songs, there are a number of sonic similarities to other bad and hated nu-metal peers in their music, espesh in the first two albums, i saw them tour with linkin park and taproot 13 years after they formed the band. just embrace the fact that you like a nu-metal band ffs.

uncle tenderlegdrop (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:29 (eight years ago) link

saying "they have rap metal songs" is p misleading though, they've recorded precisely zero of those in the last 15 years

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:45 (eight years ago) link

doesn't mean it didn't happen

uncle tenderlegdrop (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:47 (eight years ago) link

perfectly fine with considering them the best possible nu-metal band

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 22:01 (eight years ago) link

their music is still wayyy groove-oriented

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 22:01 (eight years ago) link

is REM rap rock because they did a song with KRS One

sunlick databait extremer, Thursday, 17 March 2016 15:38 (eight years ago) link

or sonic youth bc kool thing

sunlick databait extremer, Thursday, 17 March 2016 15:39 (eight years ago) link

sunlick databait extremer, Thursday, 17 March 2016 15:41 (eight years ago) link

every band on judgment night soundtrack! oh and plus aerosmith

sunlick databait extremer, Thursday, 17 March 2016 15:41 (eight years ago) link

yes yes yes

uncle tenderlegdrop (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 17 March 2016 17:17 (eight years ago) link

jim in glasgow what if someone called you nu metal. pls think about that

sunlick databait extremer, Thursday, 17 March 2016 18:35 (eight years ago) link

the first show i went to was korn supported by helmet and limp bizkit.

i am nu-metal

uncle tenderlegdrop (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 17 March 2016 18:37 (eight years ago) link

those are some "deft tones" that these guys are playing!

ejemplo (crüt), Friday, 25 March 2016 16:55 (eight years ago) link

most deft

Stoner Gabbneb & the Cocoon of Cluelessness (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 26 March 2016 04:48 (eight years ago) link

A few more Gore songs are kicking around. This is sounding pleasantly all over the place.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 3 April 2016 00:47 (eight years ago) link

And "Phantom Bride" contains something truly shocking.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 3 April 2016 00:52 (eight years ago) link

a vinyl rip is out there

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 15:32 (eight years ago) link

if that's your kind of thing

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 15:34 (eight years ago) link

pretty sure if you had played me the intro to "geometric headdress" and told me it was gorguts i'd be like "hm yeah checks out"

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 16:02 (eight years ago) link

I would love for them to do one of those Rank Your Records columns but I worry they'd break up

In other news even in shitty-rip form this sounds really really good

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 3 April 2016 17:06 (eight years ago) link

I WANT MORE LEFT TURNS

sunlick databait extremer, Sunday, 3 April 2016 17:34 (eight years ago) link

idk this kinda feels like it's full of left turns. almost every track is differently surprising

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 18:21 (eight years ago) link

i spend most of my life listening to deftones albums tho

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 18:22 (eight years ago) link

only listened to it once, but structurally sounds pretty plain..verse, chorus, bridge, etc.

sunlick databait extremer, Sunday, 3 April 2016 19:31 (eight years ago) link

a lot of deftones songs obey that. but idk "xenon" is like all chorus

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 19:33 (eight years ago) link

god "phantom bride" is so good

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 19:44 (eight years ago) link

the entire closing suite of "gore"/"phantom bride"/"rubicon" rivals "passenger"/"change"/"pink maggit" imo

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2016 19:52 (eight years ago) link

yeah "Rubicon" is a great closer. Looking forward to a proper version of this.
