I misread that as "UNITS UNITS UNITS UNITS" and I thought, man, songs that are nothing but units, units, units, units are pretty much my favourite thing in the world, whether it's techno or dronerock or what.

Because Radiohead and Kanye.

Seriously, though, I was playing "Drukqs" a year or so ago, and someone I was with perked up at "Avril 14th" and recognized it as the song Kanye sampled.

It was the case before Kid A or Drukqs though. His stuff often obeys some of the 'rules' of rock and works in a non club/dance context. This album cover explains it pretty well, really.

Also I don't think having an aversion to UNTS UNTS UNTS UNTS is necessarily a rockist or luddite reaction. It's more like the guy who asked What's with that constant cymbal tapping in jazz drumming?. I can see where he's coming from sometimes - a few times I've been in Germany or Holland and the constant immersion in (usually pretty lousy) techno can start to grate.

it's not even a reaction worth considering. "reaction" implies familiarity. it's tantamount to saying "i hate japanese films because they're all about samurai"

it's maybe surprising that ppl still lump house and techno together under the banner of "dumb dance music" using some spurious hierarchization of "depth" in music. it also has frankly homophobic undertones to me (house arose out of gay post-disco subculture, gay culture is vapid, consumerist, etc.)

Me too. Such a tight little record. The definition of getting things over and done with in as little time possible. Also, b/w Come To Daddy on the CD-R rip I was given by a mate when I was 16, very possibly the record that changed my life.

http://www.stereogum.com/1687357/premature-evaluation-aphex-twin-caustic-window/franchises/premature-evaluation/

It became exceedingly clear to me during my initial listen of Caustic Window that there have been a large number of timeless Richard D. James productions collecting dust on the CAT023 test pressings all of this time. “Fingertrips” is a queasy, 808-fueled gem that would’ve reigned over the underground rave scene had it been released in the ’90s. “Mumbly” and “Fingry” ride the same kind of neon-hued wavelength, but take that warehouse-ready vibe further into the dark with shadowy dancefloor beats, incandescent synth pads, and the sense of unbridled experimentation that has fueled RDJ’s entire illustrious career. Perhaps the biggest surprise, however, is “101 Rainbows (Ambient Mix),” a wispy and beatless synth composition that ushers out the final quarter of Caustic Window. Almost nine minutes long, the piece plays like a Steve Reich or Philip Glass classic, folding together tapestries of weightless arpeggiations and weaving gossamer flute sounds through the synthetic patchwork. It’s impossible to say which of Caustic Window’s tracks will eventually outlive the excitement and media frenzy around their release—though, if I had to put my money on it, I’d say “101 Rainbows (Ambient Mix)” is the strongest contender. But regardless of past, present, or future accolades, lingering questions, and potential volumes of unreleased music, the fact of the matter is that we now have a brand-new and sizable chunk of Richard D. James’ recorded work readily available for us to hear. It may be released under the name Caustic Window, but many of these tracks are pure Aphex Twin magic that would’ve been an integral part of his collective legacy had they appeared in 1996. As such, it’s sort of unbelievable that we actually have these songs at our fingertips now, and we should cherish Caustic Window like the unearthed treasure it rightfully is.

Caustic Window - G1 - 101 Rainbows (Ambient Mix)

:O

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 09:31 (nine years ago) link

"An ambient track. This was a reject from SAW85-92 and is unspeakably lovely. A monophonic synth weaves around soft flutes to devastating effect. The synth filter opens & closes to emphasise the riff at certain times, & the flute goes freestyle towards the end. Metallic percussion invades the song at times complementing the groovy momentum gathered by the main riff."

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 09:33 (nine years ago) link

Caustic Window - C2 - Squidge In The Fridge is also really great.

Hm. I wasn't too interested in this "lost" record, but it's excellent. Interesting how good it all sounds after so long.

I know what you mean, I can get a bit offended sometimes when the Roland Kayn thread goes more than a few days without someone waking it up

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 12:31 (nine years ago) link

I'm glad this is out there but it's weird no one's talking about the ethical aspects of its release. I got into an argument with a Pitchfork writer on Twitter who was criticizing RDJ for "forcing" fans to pay thousands of dollars for this instead of, I guess, putting it out for free or normal purchase when it became clear that it was going to be made available anyways. Which I think is a weird criticism, given that he didn't want this to come out in the first place and couldn't really be said to be "forcing" anyone to do anything.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 14:39 (nine years ago) link

yeah, I STILL can't shake the feeling that this is some elaborate hoax

the record is good in any case

really dig 'fingertips', SAW 85-92 caliber track imo

original bgm, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

yeah, how can we verify this is really RDJ and not a hoax? (haven't had a chance to listen to any tracks yet btw).

And when the fuck is he releasing new material?
