Sometimes it works though: Kiesza's "Hideaway" finally got its official release today and will be almost certainly number 1 next week, Shift K3y's "Touch" (almost forgot about that one) looks like it might enter inside the top 10.

i get the impression that the art is now harnessing that digital people power correctly, just shoving something out there just doesn't work at the highest level

oops i shouldve added i mention ministry there as an example of savvy practice

oh man "german whip" might be the one new british rap song i banng every 2 years

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:57 (ten years ago) link

aside from the (amazing) moments when the beat speeds up, "german whip" is the most in-tune-with-US-trends grime song ever. it's really great obv

lex pretend, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 17:24 (ten years ago) link

I don't particularly like it either and it's probably for exactly that reason.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 20:06 (ten years ago) link

or is it that us rap has become much more like grime

ahhhhhh

r|t|c, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 21:55 (ten years ago) link

lol I love german whip with all my heart, I assumed that meant it sucked

i do like how there's basically no conversation to be had between ppl who like it and ppl who don't

my entire mansplain to trace is simply [recites entire lyrics]

Results are in: Kiesza "Hideaway": no 1, Shift K3y "Touch": no 3 (!), Meridian Dan "German Whip": no 13.

i really don't like "touch" either; too militantly cheery, with no room to breathe

am i losing the interzone faith??

wouldn't necessarily call "Remedy" lightweight - i mean yeah, production-wise it is somewhat pedestrian but as a song it's pure class, moreso than any recent 2step throwback i can think of

Mind Taker, Friday, 25 April 2014 22:32 (nine years ago) link

yeah i agree its a wicked song, they´ve got potential these lot. loved ´higher´ from last year (especially the preditah mix obv), and the other tracks on the new ep sound pretty schmoove too.

does anyone fuck with "hideaway"

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 May 2014 23:44 (nine years ago) link

it feels stitched together and... weirdly, like, unprofessional. like whoever made it doesn't have a great idea of how to put a track together yet.

there's some real good moments though, i'm into it

Kiesza

everyone in that thread mostly otm

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 May 2014 23:49 (nine years ago) link

i'm basically 100 x more enthusiastic about the gorgon city remix than i seem in that thread, it's one of my singles of the year

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 06:50 (nine years ago) link

I'm interested to see where she goes next - in a genre driven by faceless producers, she seems (along with maybe MNEK) like the likeliest contender to be a breakout pop talent.

ginuwine's cousin (monotony), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 06:53 (nine years ago) link

well as much as i love a remix of her song, it doesn't make me care about her at all

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 07:01 (nine years ago) link

and it's not like the song's appeal is driven by her charisma exactly

unfortunately the breakout pop talents from this scene will probably be the secret sheerans and secret sandés who probably had a solo deal all along like sam smith and ella eyre. those who stick to house (sinead harnett) don't seem to get off the ground in the same way and even a*m*e, who's the most explicit about wanting to make pop (and probably the most actually charismatic vocalist to date in this mini-movement), doesn't seem to be happening

though i would argue looking for a breakout pop talent isn't really the point in the first place?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 07:05 (nine years ago) link

I don't think this scene has thrown up a single vocalist who I give a shit about outside the context of the big dance hits. Even MNEK has a kind of dorky awkwardness to him and may turn out to be a better backroom songwriter than he his a pop star.

For now it seems like the record buying public are buying the faceless producers rather than the faces per se, and that's even allowing for people like Sam Smith with a massive record company push behind them. Duke Dumont and Rudimental are more reliably bankable names than any of the vocalists (except Sande obviously and she precedes all this really).

Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 07:51 (nine years ago) link

I think focusing on the singers for their own sake is almost always a mistake when it comes to UK pop-dance. Katy B, and Mis-Teeq if they count, are the only exceptions that comes to mind across 25 years or so.

Craig David had two good singles I guess.

'Functional' doesn't have to be a pejorative term when it comes to dance music but that Secondcity track is horribly functional...where's the excitement there?

online hardman, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 09:22 (nine years ago) link

whole thing sounds sluggish/like the worst kind of club IMO. House for Supreme clad 16yr olds etc.

online hardman, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 09:24 (nine years ago) link

I find that track pleasantly formulaic but if you're sneering at house music for 16 year-olds this probably isn't the thread for you. I've heard a lot worse in shitty clubs over the years.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 09:40 (nine years ago) link

wasn't sneering, and this isn't the thread for it, but i was into house when i was 16 and wouldn't have listened to this.

tbh, i'd no doubt enjoy it a lot more in the context of a mix so I'll trawl through this thread and download some recent ones.

online hardman, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 10:39 (nine years ago) link

This kind of needs to be the sort of hyper-familiar melodic track that you drench the crowd with after a stretch of harder stuff. I don't love it by any means and it's sort of route-one but I can totally see how it would work.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 10:50 (nine years ago) link

mm yeah you'll definitely crack the case of the #1 pop song by pondering it in the mix

ooh didn't know this had a video and everything (u will know it from the shift k3y mix, where it blends in seamlessly with ryan leslie vox and sk's other assorted minor 90s-ish new yorky quirks) (crossref with disclosure i guess)

luvvit; beguiling and casually unconventional

r|t|c, Sunday, 15 June 2014 10:24 (nine years ago) link

as an aside it's probably worth observing (in this continuing climate of ppl simultaneously parlaying solo pop star oversharing with dance vocalist disposability cf sam smith thread) how obstinately anonymous sam frank (not even listed on the video title there) is

think there's like one poss two photos of him and he just looks like the sort of guy who comes round to fix your broadband

guess singing whole tunes like skream 'rollercoaster' in a marge simpson voice is a compensation of sorts idk
