OK, I think it's 10 states. 45 states, I think, allow underage drinking under certain circumstances.

Wisconsin:

Can children be in a bar with their parents?

Yes. Persons under age 21 may be on licensed premises, if they are with their parents, guardians, or spouses of legal drinking age; but this is at the discretion of the licensee.

Can an underage person possess and consume alcohol beverages on licenses premises?

Yes. Persons under age 21 may possess and consume alcohol beverages if they are with their parents, guardians or spouses of legal drinking age; but this is at the discretion of the licensee. The licensed premise may choose to prohibit consumption and possession of alcohol beverages by underage persons.

Ivy, we're going to Kenosha to get wasted.

Bars in Georgia have a choice, either allow smoking or allow kids in the bar. If a bar allows smoking, then nobody under 21 can enter. It's a good compromise, the best bars in atl allow smoking ( I'm not a smoker) but u don't have to deal with kids.

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Sunday, 13 April 2014 04:12 (ten years ago) link

"i'm guessing you don't have kids" is def one of the most annoying things parents say to non-parents, esp in that superior tone it usually comes in

damn right i don't and there's a reason for that. i don't like them or being around them. i'm not going to be overtly displeased with kids in bars (well, kid-friendly bars, some bars would be just wrong) but i reserve the right to prefer them elsewhere and bitch about it privately afterwards. i don't think "enjoying the company of strangers' kids" should be a general expectation. i don't like the company of obnoxious adults either and pick the places i socialise to avoid them where possible and basically 90% of kids have the same effect.

kids that i actually know are slightly easier to tolerate, i guess.

lex pretend, Sunday, 13 April 2014 11:26 (ten years ago) link

i'm sorry they asked.

estela, Sunday, 13 April 2014 11:48 (ten years ago) link

If people traded in their kids for a TV, we'd all get along.

Im generally in favour of kids and that level of anarchy but damn right i reserve the right to enjoy a good eyeroll at the parents the nanosecond it begins to displease me lyfe is good

mte

Suspect cultural differences factor in though. Found this which I did not know about

Before 1995 children under the age of 14 were not allowed in pubs in England and Wales

gyac, Sunday, 13 April 2014 13:00 (ten years ago) link

every neighbourhood should have one big kid-friendly pub and then everyone without kids (and parents on a night out) would know exactly where to avoid. you're welcome.

fwiw i usually don't like other people's kids and i especially don't like other parents so i feel you non-parents on this one

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 13 April 2014 14:42 (ten years ago) link

it's really less the kids themselves and more the expectation that everyone should be as delighted by their existence as their parents are, and that non-parents who object somehow "don't get it" or whatever

lex pretend, Sunday, 13 April 2014 16:48 (ten years ago) link

It's less the kids and more the fuckin noise

recommend me a new bagman (darraghmac), Sunday, 13 April 2014 16:51 (ten years ago) link

Its ok that you dont get it

xp

Unless these are nieces and nephews, I don't think I've ever met a parent that assumed my affection for his or her children.

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 13 April 2014 16:53 (ten years ago) link

well, not affection, but more the perspective (as on this thread) that anyone who objects to kids or dislikes their presence is being intolerant or somehow unreasonable

lex pretend, Sunday, 13 April 2014 17:02 (ten years ago) link

Saying u dont like kids is like saying u dont like short people or people w red hair or big feet or something, imho

that is completely ludicrous imho

All otm

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 April 2014 17:17 (ten years ago) link

Guys, I didnt say "sexually attracted to"

Just pointing out that blanket statements about groups of people based on physical characteristics are sort of erm how u say "problematic"

Fwiw I was joking upthread, would never bring kids to a bar

I tend to avoid redheads with sunburnt knees as a rule

Yeah, stupid kids interrupting my silent contemplation at the pin-drop quiet corner bar. It's all downhill from there. First come the kids, then come the jukeboxes, then comes the beer... Oh, wait, it starts with the beer, sorry. First comes the beer, then comes the drunks, then comes the ... huh, you're right, drunk people are loud, too. Hmm ... last comes the kids?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 13 April 2014 17:57 (ten years ago) link

Tbh, I don't think I've ever seen kids in a bar. And when I do, it's usually brief and for some good reason.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 13 April 2014 17:58 (ten years ago) link

Start threads for all those other things and i'll pop in to protest them, had you a point besides?

also wtf move somewhere with better pub options

Generally speaking, the worst place people can bring their kids is with them to my house.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 13 April 2014 18:21 (ten years ago) link

bringing your kids to the grocery store is the worst, what are they even doing, they don't even shop, they just drive around in those orange cars yelling and getting in people's way.

brimstead, Sunday, 13 April 2014 18:34 (ten years ago) link

Bringing yr kids on to public transport is the worst, with a special hell reserved for u if its a plane

Course i should stress that there're kids and then there're *kids* i mean just kids are ok anywhere rly

My dad took me to bars all the time.

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 April 2014 20:39 (ten years ago) link

It seems like lex is upset about not being able to accost parents and kids. Are parents asking him if he isn't delighted? I never encounter this anywhere ever. No one solicits reactions from me about their kids.

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 April 2014 20:41 (ten years ago) link

As a gay man with many straight friends w/kids -- hung out with two couples and their newborns last night -- I've never once felt social pressure to love their adorableness. On the contrary, both couples last night ordered lots of drink and were at pains to avoid inconveniencing me.

Oh, man, the worst is at stores where the kids are encouraged to push around their own little carts. So there you are, trying to shop, and you have to avoid all these little satellites zipping around the aisles, circling the mothership, leaving their little cart places, knocking shit over, dumping their own carts over. I refuse to let my kids do that, because I don't want to be part of the problem.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 13 April 2014 20:52 (ten years ago) link

you dont, strictly speaking, have to avoid them, if you take care to act like you just didnt see them

those fuckin carts

I believe the children are our future. Drink and pint and let them lead the way. Show them all the vomit you possess inside.

less irl than online in threads like this one

irl parents tend to be obnoxious in other ways, mostly by acting as though no one outside their horrible insular nuclear family unit even exists

three months pass...
