I felt sad during the scene with britta and jeff (which was awesome, btw), because it *did remind me so much of the series at the start - the chemistry between the two of them, the 'will=they/won't-they' thing the series comprehensively outgrew - and it made me feel sad that this season, while better than the one that preceded it, has been patchy, and feels like the end, and that the show had *so much potential - and often fulfilled it, mind - but that it seems to have been limping along since halfway through the third season or so, and it didn't have to be that way, and if Chevy or Dan Harmon hadn't been so assholish, and if Sony or NBC had had more luck with the show, and Donald Glover hadn't bolted, it could have maintained that level until the end. which may not be true, but i felt a pang of "if only" in that moment.

I pretty much think Seasons 1-3 were impeccable, and agree that this year has been better than 4 but not perfect.

I'm ok with them hanging it up after this. It's not going out on top, but it's going out a lot better than it would have after Season 4. This is the type of show that always had a finite shelf life re: quality control, and part of me had wished they were gonna wrap it up after 3.

still, can't complain given the number of lols it gave this year.

also yeah Glover leaving hurt. Pierce being gone wasn't even a thing really - they essentially had a "Pierce episode" without him even having to appear! But removing 1/2 of Troy and Abed left too many gaps, although I was pleasantly surprised that they still managed to churn out some great episodes afterwards.

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Sunday, 13 April 2014 21:17 (ten years ago) link

i feel like its a show that needs 20+ episodes a season to make sense, so half of them can be whacky conceptual episodes, and the other half can develop characters and move the "plot" along. this season feels like there were another 12 episodes that i missed, which explain who hickey is and what's going on. 13 episodes is too short. it almost feels like they haven't 'earned' wildcards like the the GI Joe episode, like this season was all sprinkles and no ice cream.

but yeah, it's glover's absence that hurts most. it makes this season feel like the aerosmith album they cut while joe perry was out of the band.

After this season, they're 3 episodes away from the 100 required for syndication. I can't imagine Sony not picking it up for at least a shortened season.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 13 April 2014 21:47 (ten years ago) link

yeah, i'd heard as much. i wish they'd get a full season though - like, it seems like this season is ending just as they're getting into their flow.

100 required for syndication

This is not a magic number in 2014 (or 2012). They're already in syndication.

tv by the numbers has it as a tossup but i can't imagine they don't get a final season, esp as it'll be a useful thing to send out to get slaughtered by football on cbs

balls, Sunday, 13 April 2014 22:28 (ten years ago) link

S4 is actually quite a lot funnier than the second half of S3, which really did feel like they were overstretching themselves for the first time.

This is OTM though, and Troy is irreplaceable. I still wouldn't bet against him reappearing at some point though, even if it's only as a special guest.

Matt DC, Sunday, 13 April 2014 23:14 (ten years ago) link

agreed, this show actually could use more episodes to split up the wackiness/serious episodes more evenly

that Jeff/Britta scene got me pretty good, too, to my surprise. damn, Britta <3

xpost I didn't find anything in ssn 4 as funny as the 2nd half of ssn 3

The Sophie B. Hawkins Dance episode was the only one in S4 that didn't feel like a faint approximation of Community. But it still wasn't even as good as the worst S3 episodes.

The second half of s3 was terrible, particularly in contrast with the first half.

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Monday, 14 April 2014 00:58 (ten years ago) link

I dunno, I didn't think it was terrible, but it definitely wildly swung for the fences and didn't necessarily succeed. Even if it didn't always bring the lols, I appreciated the shit out of it for going to stupidly absurd lengths to do so.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 14 April 2014 01:07 (ten years ago) link

i'm fine w/ second half of season 3 and season 3 in general (haven't seen it since it aired but have long suspected season 3's main problem is it had to follow season 2). looking over the episode list though the only two i recall being stone cold classics are chaos theory (obv) and xmas one that took on glee. the l&o one was awesome also but i can't pretend that has much to offer to someone not familiar w/ l&o.

if you watched American TV in the last 20 years you had to have seen some variant of law and order, it was broad enough

Sorry, I actually meant S5 has been funnier than the second half of S3. S4 was mostly depressing shit.

Pretty disappointing finale, but some hilarious moments (the shushing, everyone imitating Dave at the end).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 18 April 2014 19:27 (ten years ago) link

I thought it wasn't awful, had a few really solid laughs. The jukebox door was perfect.

Yeah, that was funny. I think I started to see what stevie was talking about upthread, though, how this really needed to be a 20+ episode season for relationships to properly develop/take root.

Stephen King's Threaderstarter (kingfish), Friday, 18 April 2014 19:53 (ten years ago) link

Oh yeah, that makes complete sense. I thought they did a decent job with this one though, I liked the "canon" comment to hedge the renewal bets.

Did you catch the historic facts on the wall timeline? One of the original names considered for the town of Greendale was "Harmon's Heartbreak".

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 18 April 2014 19:55 (ten years ago) link

It was a low key finale to a low key season but I'm just glad Harmon got to right the ship.

da croupier, Friday, 18 April 2014 20:21 (ten years ago) link

I really enjoyed the credits scene.

Fetchboy, Saturday, 19 April 2014 02:02 (ten years ago) link

This could have done with being more Goonies and less Deus Ex Machina I think but this really didn't have the feel of Last Episode Ever.

Best thing about this season was at no point did Chang insert his own name into any other sentence. Always hated that.

Matt DC, Saturday, 19 April 2014 09:27 (ten years ago) link

I was pretty happy with the way they handled Chang this season, until the whole reveal that he was spying on the group. That was a roll my eyes, "again!?!" kind of moment. But this season has been such a massive improvement over the last that it seems weird to hang on to such a minor complaint.

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 21 April 2014 17:31 (ten years ago) link

he was only spying on the group for the last two episodes, thankfully... but yeah, even the show pathetically lamp-shaded it. but yeah, overal best Chang in years

Nhex, Monday, 21 April 2014 17:48 (ten years ago) link

finale was pretty bad, rmde at the whole chris elliott emoticon thing. whole chris elliott character possibly

sort of like last season's finale but with dan harmon cynicism added in

Nhex, Friday, 9 May 2014 18:55 (nine years ago) link

I can't even be real mad about this, because I have no idea what stories are left to tell in a potential sixth season (much less a fucking movie). Did Troy die at sea? That's all I need to know, I guess.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 9 May 2014 18:59 (nine years ago) link

I can't imagine any out there could actually be surprised by this, but it does kinda sting after how much the show bounced back with the 5th season. I guess I'll just be glad it didn't fade out after the awful Season 4.

Yeah, I kind of feel the same way. Sucks that it's done, but at least it went out on a high note. Makes season 4 seem like that much more of a waste, though.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 9 May 2014 19:02 (nine years ago) link

I'm still not sure season 4 was so much worse than season 5 tbh. Or maybe that season 5 was so much better than its predecessor.
