Bee OK, Thursday, 3 April 2014 02:47 (ten years ago) link

Such a tremendous video. One of the all-time greatest.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 3 April 2014 02:49 (ten years ago) link

^^Wasn't it (along with Springsteen's "Atlantic City" clip) the first major video wherein the artist didn't appear in person* ?

*Fagan is on a poster in his.

How About A Kiss For Your Cousin Doogie (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 3 April 2014 02:53 (ten years ago) link

Probably, and "Atlantic City" came out around the same time (like, within a month of "New Frontier").

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 3 April 2014 02:57 (ten years ago) link

so this next song only beat "New Frontier" by one point, the only reason it did come out on top was because it had a number one vote.

Released: October 29, 1982
262 Points, 7 Votes, 4 Number Ones

Bee OK, Thursday, 3 April 2014 03:08 (ten years ago) link

According to Wikipedia, "the 'I.G.Y.' of the title refers to the 'International Geophysical Year', an event that ran from July 1957 to December 1958. The I.G.Y. was an international scientific project promoting collaboration among the world's scientists. Fagen's lyrics reference futuristic concepts such as solar-powered cities, a transatlantic tunnel, permanent space stations, and spandex jackets."

really i'm the only asshole who voted for "snowbound"?

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 April 2014 03:19 (ten years ago) link

didn't have enough time to vote solo but totally would've voted for 'snowbound'

balls, Thursday, 3 April 2014 03:25 (ten years ago) link

so my personal story, i bought The Nightfly last year and only opened it in January. just about a week ago i read the inside and found out that I.G.Y. has International Geophysical Year written below it. i didn't end up voting for this part of the poll as i figured 8 solo songs was just not quite enough.

Bee OK, Thursday, 3 April 2014 03:25 (ten years ago) link

i have a big surprise for tomorrow as pplains was able to come through.

(This would've been the time where Autumn Almanac would say, "Hey, it's the middle of Thursday afternoon here!")

pplains, Thursday, 3 April 2014 04:39 (ten years ago) link

glad to turn some people onto the Becker record -- one of my hangups about Fagen solo/later SD is that Donald's voice has been in decline, but Becker seemed to finally find his on Circus Money, kind of a gruff, personable Warren Zevon vibe.

CANS.... and D? (some dude), Thursday, 3 April 2014 04:44 (ten years ago) link

Two Against Nature won the group four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. It has been certified 2× Platinum in the US.

Two Against Nature marked Steely Dan's long-awaited debut for Warner Bros. Records - through a sub-label, Giant Records. They intended to release Gaucho on Warner Bros. after their longtime label ABC Records merged with MCA Records, but MCA claimed ownership of the master recordings.
