Dave Cameron: I think making life decisions that involve intentionally taking less money than possible are generally as a positive character trait. On the other hand, one could argue that Trout had some responsibility to help elevate the pay scale for those that come after him. It depends on your perspective.

what

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Wednesday, 2 April 2014 23:18 (ten years ago) link

Fuck this guy. I am trading him off of my team in MLB 14: The Show as soon as I get home.

Andy K, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 23:33 (ten years ago) link

dave cameron needs to get out of his parents' basement, etc. etc.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 23:41 (ten years ago) link

dave cameron is a good baseball writer, just for the record

surfbort memes get played out, totally (k3vin k.), Thursday, 3 April 2014 17:42 (ten years ago) link

How is MBT: TS 14?

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 3 April 2014 17:49 (ten years ago) link

i am bored so i just clocked trout's time around the bases on his triple last night, from contact until he slid into third, and got 11.6. that's really fast, right?

surfbort memes get played out, totally (k3vin k.), Thursday, 3 April 2014 18:18 (ten years ago) link

very sad MLB TS 14 for PS4 doesn't come out for another month, I won't be able to rig a bullshit trade between the Angels and Giants for Trout for 27 more days.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 3 April 2014 19:14 (ten years ago) link

that dave cameron point is weird, i don't think he believes that

dave cameron is also the best baseball writer on the planet

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 April 2014 21:55 (ten years ago) link

he's alright, he is just really weird about money things and gets totally anchored down by fangraphs' trademarks, ie using fWAR as an unquestioned be-all end-all thing that never really requires any further analysis beyond the x.x figure. which isn't surprising, he's gotta support the company product, but it's annoying. and in his chats he comes off as possibly the most humorless and irritable human being in the world (and every answer essentially boils down to "just look at the fWAR figure/look at what ZiPS projects the fWAR figure to be")

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 3 April 2014 23:00 (ten years ago) link

that said, this fangraphs article is a fun read that will try to convince you that mike trout will either die horribly or end up as one of the 5 greatest hitters of all time. amazing thing is it doesn't even begin to consider position/defense/baserunning, just pure offense.

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 3 April 2014 23:01 (ten years ago) link

you're referring to the one that deals in cumulative standard deviations, right? yeah that line near the end where he (not dave cameron, it was another writer) was like "remember, trout could die in a plane crash tomorrow" or something to that effect was like...ok man you don't really need to cover ALL the bases

Cameron got tot ridiculed by a speaker at a SABR convention a few years ago

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 April 2014 03:02 (ten years ago) link

to be fair he had to mention "tragedy" cause conigliaro came up as an obvious comp

4 Ks in the game, first time

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 20 April 2014 05:19 (nine years ago) link

seems like he either mashes the ball or whiffs this year. actually include the last month of last year too iirc

k3vin k., Sunday, 20 April 2014 15:12 (nine years ago) link

'nother hat trick tonight

k3vin k., Wednesday, 23 April 2014 02:59 (nine years ago) link

He made a point of saying he was going to be more aggressive before the season, so maybe 150 Ks a year will be normal for him now. Everything else seems in order, although you would think it'd be harder to keep his average up in the .325 range the more he strikes out.

clemenza, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 03:31 (nine years ago) link

he's charging toward a 30% strikeout rate...with pujols going gangbusters, he's not going to walk like he did last year. eventually this is going to be a problem

k3vin k., Wednesday, 23 April 2014 18:03 (nine years ago) link

it's been like 3 games

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 24 April 2014 00:23 (nine years ago) link

his K rate was >23% the last 2 months of last season too. it's a real trend

k3vin k., Thursday, 24 April 2014 01:26 (nine years ago) link

bring it up again when he isn't leading the league in WAR
