Tim Sherwood: I need Champions League qualification to keep Spurs job
Sunday 19 Jan 2014 8:23 pm

‘We know there are going to be tougher tests ahead, but it’s been a good start for me,’ Sherwood said. ‘If the season were to end tomorrow I don’t think the chairman [Daniel Levy] would be too happy because we are fifth.

‘The final league position has to meet the expectation of the club otherwise it’s ‘‘goodbye Charlie’’.

‘The club needs to finish in fourth place. Anything other than that will be a disappointment but realistically we should be in amongst it.’

Tim Sherwood says record makes him Spurs' best Premier League manager
Saturday 26 April 2014 00.50 BST

"It was never the brief when I came into the club that we had to finish in fourth place," he said. "What was said to me was: 'Can we make the team a little bit more attractive and score more goals?' and I think I've ticked that box."

Not sure what to think about Pochettino. He's obviously a good technical manager, could potentially sort out the defence and should help get the best out of players like Lamela but it always worries me when managers seem to have difficulty getting clubs out of terrible slumps. That period of four wins in eighteen games towards the end of the season is a concern, as is the end of his time at Espanyol.

Yuri Bashment (ShariVari), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 07:52 (nine years ago) link

I have no faith in any manager, chairman nor player nor act of any god to effect any change at spurs.

"In Mauricio I believe we have a Head Coach who, with his high energy, attacking football, will embrace the style of play we associate with our Club. He has a proven ability to develop each player as an individual, whilst building great team spirit and a winning mentality.

“I am delighted that Andre has agreed to become our new Head Coach. He has an outstanding reputation for his technical knowledge of the game and for creating well-organised teams capable of playing football in an attractive and attacking style. Andre shares our long-term ambitions and ethos of developing players and nurturing young talent, and he will be able to do so now at a new world class Training Centre.”

"With his great knowledge of the game and his excellent motivational skills, Harry has inspired his teams to consistently over-perform, whilst his preferred attacking style of playing the game sits comfortably with our Club's history, heritage and the type of entertaining football our fans want and expect to see."

“Juande’s arrival is great news for Tottenham Hotspur. He brings with him a wealth of experience, a proven track record and a winning pedigree. Now is the time for us to regroup and look to deliver the results and performances that everyone associated with the Club wants to see.

“Martin is a highly experienced coach and I am delighted that he has accepted what to me is one of the most prestigious positions in the Premiership. He has a reputation for creating well-organised teams capable of playing attractive football. He is very technically minded with a good knowledge of both English and European football, in addition to first class man management skills.

The announcement of the exciting appointment of current France coach Jacques Santini as our new Head Coach after Euro 2004 has sparked an huge demand for Season Tickets for the new campaign - make sure you don't miss out on the action!

"We have a great squad and we owe them a Head Coach who will bring out the best in them and allow them to flourish and enjoy a strong, exciting finish to the season. "We are in the fortunate position of having within our Club a talented coach in Tim Sherwood. "We believe Tim has both the knowledge and the drive to take the squad forward."

anonanon, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 14:16 (nine years ago) link

Southampton had a small squad that had basically run themselves into the ground by Christmas, I'm not sure it'll be as much of an issue at Spurs, even allowing for lol injury crises.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 15:57 (nine years ago) link

despite none of them being on the england plane, there are fourteen spurs players past&present going to brazil. that's not far off barca

ogmor, Friday, 6 June 2014 07:42 (nine years ago) link

Lloris, Vertonghen, Dembele, Paulinho, Modric, Chadli, Bentaleb, BAE, Dos Santos, KPB, Palacios, Zokora, Postiga, Pletikosa - right?

The last couple took me ages to get.

Matt DC, Thursday, 12 June 2014 10:16 (nine years ago) link

looking over our squad, if vertonghen will play lb with a decent attitude that's 1 worthy first team defender. best of the rest are crocked or shakey or both, worst of the rest are awful or dgaf and can't be picked.

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 July 2014 15:03 (nine years ago) link

regardles of attitude i don't think jan is a fullback. agree that there are plenty of questions about the rest of em.
supposedly bidding 5M for jamaal lascelles who... has a cool name. don't know anything else.

mizzell, Tuesday, 8 July 2014 16:55 (nine years ago) link

I wish I'd found that website, took me an hour in excel. tho I will as able to add a fairly pithy comment field.

lloris
vertonghen- if no prob at lb
kaboul- replace if possible
chiriches- replace if possible
walker- watch like a fuckin hawk, try to sell for decent cash, replace
Sandro
dembele
eriksen
Lennon
lamela not sure how adaptable he is at LW
Adebayor - flaky as fuck but its not gonna happen for soldado let's face it

flog- Dawson, siggurdson, paulinho, naughton, everyone, sell the club, stadium, buy gold or oil futures, learn peace, fuck hateful football

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 July 2014 17:28 (nine years ago) link

With Vertonghen, Walker and Chiriches it's a problem with decision-making, not ability or technique - Poch knows how to organise a defence and should be able to work those problems out, ideally with Vertonghen at CB. Kaboul is finished and should be offloaded as quickly as possible, he's either injured or a disaster area, but I don't think anyone would take him. Dawson I suspect will be gone by the end of the summer.

It appears we're hawking Sandro around which strikes me as madness, if we're going to play the sort of pressing game then he's essential in midfield. I was hoping the World Cup would illuminate something about Paulinho but he appears to be the ultimate water-carrier really.

Stoked to see what Poch will be able to do with Eriksen and Lamela.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 July 2014 18:45 (nine years ago) link

yes to the three, being hugely optimistic, that being the outlook then kaboul being fit and not killed in a high line is no further of a stretch IMO matt. just can't see it!

bae back at lb or is the ship sailed?

Sandro is our best player alongside eriksen and lloris and our best leader alongside kaboul and it beggars belief that we're not fending off huge bids for him, never mind trying to sell him off our own bat.

paulinho is awful, not even showing ability in flashes like gylfi or chadli

I'm psyched to see what poch does with holtby and townsend

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 July 2014 18:54 (nine years ago) link

I still think paulinho has the most potential of our more attacking MFs, hope poch gives him a go

ogmor, Tuesday, 8 July 2014 19:12 (nine years ago) link

yeah tbf I would be uneasy about writing off anyone but Dawson, naughton from p much our entire squad there's a us able squad player at least in each of the rest and none of last summers purchases came near to their potential

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 July 2014 19:23 (nine years ago) link

would a move for di maria be out of the question

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 July 2014 23:17 (nine years ago) link

yes

i mean LFC probably had/have the money to buy Pogba but cmon now.

pandemic, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 08:54 (nine years ago) link

lascelles is talented but unless poch is v v diligent then moving to spurs at 20 now will surely turn him into another jenas/walker/naughton feckless pissflap

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 10:05 (nine years ago) link

lack of midfield distributor still painfully obv from that stack of squad names there

jordy clasie would do nicely imo

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 10:19 (nine years ago) link

depends on distribution method envisaged IMO, holtby can do metronome, for all the lack of form paulinho can surely carry it and provide simple links, dembele also capable of travelling with it if that's required, bentaleb p decent simple link. was prob the most overlooked/neglected part of avb setup maybe? and Sherwood wasn't gonna put it right, but I don't think individual ability is a huge prob in the midfield set

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 10:57 (nine years ago) link

doesnt have to be thudd hollywood pings but u need more about u than those water carrier types to improve the laborious transitions you have right now

dembele capable, yeah gl with that

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 11:28 (nine years ago) link

sorry the lackofform() function had more than just paulinho as an input but dembele is in no way a write off just yet imo

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 11:30 (nine years ago) link

he's not but the fate of a season shouldnt rest on that whimsy either

other than for sociopaths "we're shit without you" is the arch anti-motivator, in fitba and indeed beyond

He's definitely in the group of players I'd expect Poch to improve, so pretty happy about this. Pretty much the end of Vertonghen at LB I'd imagine.

Matt DC, Thursday, 31 July 2014 16:07 (nine years ago) link

he's not a bad backup and along with a lot of the players we keep getting rid of is a good cheap squad option
