Spoke to Deakin and Vashti Bunyna about ten years of Prospect Hummer (IMO their best release to date) http://thequietus.com/articles/17672-vashti-bunyan-animal-collective-conversation-interview

BWI actually has Dan Deacon and Future Islands on constant rotation in the bathrooms every day.

well, this is different.

meant, Thanksgiving eve.

Poor people. As if wasting time with their families on thanksgiving wasn't bad enough.

...and I'd complain even more if I went to the toilets to get away from Animal Collective offending my ears and I was confronted with the god-awful sound of Future Islands instead. Although, I guess there's a none more fitting soundtrack for having a shit to.

The version of "what would I want sky" on live at 930 is beautiful

calstars, Wednesday, 2 December 2015 02:13 (eight years ago) link

i was pleasantly surprised with Live at 9:30. the mix is phenomenal, i'd never heard their interludes and transitions with such clarity. every time i've seen them after 2006, the live mix has been really muddy. It gave me a new appreciation for a lot of the CHz songs like 'Father Time' and 'Monkey Riches.'

flappy bird, Wednesday, 2 December 2015 02:58 (eight years ago) link

one month passes...

Surprised there's no mention of their upcoming album here - I guess times have changed. Already seems strange that these guys were the definition of the zeitgeist for a brief while. They influenced a lot of copycats, but did any of those copycats have any tunes? Hope the new one backs of a bit from the kitchen-sink mud overload of the last one. I listened to the ILX pre-cover version of Centipede Hz way more than the real thing.

the_ecuador_three, Thursday, 7 January 2016 13:09 (eight years ago) link

yeah the production/arrangements weren't great on the latest album but there were some good tunes and great bits, here and there.

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 7 January 2016 13:34 (eight years ago) link

Seems to me that MPP was their New Jersey. The big hyped album that garnered critical and commercial praise on the back of past successes more than its own merits, and ultimately pointed to the game being up.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Thursday, 7 January 2016 14:06 (eight years ago) link

I haven't followed the "New Jersey" thread in details but it seems the idea is also that the album in question has to be bad (I'm not necessarily talking about the MJ album !) or not so good.
I know many people and AC fans don't particularly like MPP but for most (including me), it's pretty solid.

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 7 January 2016 14:34 (eight years ago) link

Yep I know plenty of people who didn't really get their previous stuff, but thought MPP was that bit more polished and hooky. It's more of a (What's the Story) Morning Glory than a Be Here Now.

the_ecuador_three, Thursday, 7 January 2016 15:06 (eight years ago) link

I heard the newest single and was just, what is this, this is making my stomach feel queasy

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 7 January 2016 15:21 (eight years ago) link

new animal collective there was a little bit of discussion of FloriDada here

it's better than most of the last one but sounds pretty indistinguishable from like... Yeasayer or some other band they've influenced. don't really have much in the way of expectations since there was a big drop-off in quality after MPP, neither CHz or any of the solo albums have been much good.

ufo, Thursday, 7 January 2016 15:31 (eight years ago) link

no way is MPP a New Jersey. If the AC have one song everyone knows, it's "My Girls."

Really psyched for Painting With. All indications point to something more direct and immediate than ChZ, with tons of Sung Tongs-esque vocal interplay.

flappy bird, Thursday, 7 January 2016 18:02 (eight years ago) link

oh yeah, and for anyone who still cares, Deakin's solo album is finally coming out next month http://pitchfork.com/news/62710-animal-collectives-deakin-finishes-long-delayed-solo-album/

flappy bird, Thursday, 7 January 2016 18:03 (eight years ago) link

Definitely not a New Jersey. With a New Jersey, the hype is more of the pre-release variety, gained by from a previous release, rather than all of the critical accolades it gains after it comes out. You could maybe make the case for Centipede Hz as being their New Jersey, but I feel like that album didn't have a lot of hype going into it.

MarkoP, Thursday, 7 January 2016 18:15 (eight years ago) link

it had a fair amount of hype, with the Honeycomb/Gotham single coming out in May, with a four month lead-up to the release of the record. and it had all the pressure of being the followup to Merriweather..."Today's Supernatural" definitely fits the bill as a single that was played a lot at the time and sort of forgotten now

flappy bird, Thursday, 7 January 2016 18:40 (eight years ago) link

xps I found MPP to be patchy as fuck.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Thursday, 7 January 2016 19:20 (eight years ago) link

really? what songs didn't do it for you?

flappy bird, Thursday, 7 January 2016 19:23 (eight years ago) link

I found that starting with Strawberry Jam, AC decided to go further and further down this route of claustrophobic bit-crushed noise that buried everything in this really clumsy, unrefined way. The lyrics became self-parodic and as ufo alludes to upthread, they became another chillwavish band in a sea of other chillwavish bands. Tracks I would save from MPP include Bluish, Lion In a Coma, No More Runnin and Brothersport. The rest I can take or leave.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 8 January 2016 13:40 (eight years ago) link

I think I still love or at least really like almost all the tracks on MPP, even years after binge listening to it.
for me, that album is upthere with the best pop albums ever, no less !

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 8 January 2016 14:07 (eight years ago) link

You know what? I really liked the Fall Be Kind EP that came out around that time. That's the last AC release I really loved.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 8 January 2016 14:26 (eight years ago) link

Yes! Esp "What would I want"

calstars, Friday, 8 January 2016 14:33 (eight years ago) link

yeah - i remember hearing it live before it came out and thinking it was one of the best things i'd heard by them.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 8 January 2016 14:45 (eight years ago) link

stop daydreaming dude

calstars, Friday, 8 January 2016 14:59 (eight years ago) link

yeah - i remember hearing it live before it came out and thinking it was one of the best things i'd heard by them.

Likewise! I saw them in Dublin in 2009 and they played it and I recorded the second half of it on my phone because it sounded great. When Fall Be Kind came out later that year I recognised it straight away.

groovypanda, Friday, 8 January 2016 15:04 (eight years ago) link

well that's not a bad track at all. i quite like it. Nice and bouncy. The production is a bit more solid than I'd come to expect from them. and I like the Wipeout sample.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 8 January 2016 15:11 (eight years ago) link

What Would I Want? Sky is probably my favorite AC-track as well. I prefer Fall Be Kind to MPP. And like SJ and CHz more as well. I just could never get into MPP. But when I heard them live after CHz, I have to admit My Girls and Brother Sport were awesome.

Frederik B, Friday, 8 January 2016 15:50 (eight years ago) link

I agree that the Fall be Kind EP was great and somehow, managed to meet my high expectations following MPP.
It was like having my own psychedelic era Beatles releasing a classic pop album and following it up with a stand-alone single/EP. only it didn't go further...
I think I can is fantastic.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 8 January 2016 16:08 (eight years ago) link

yea it seems SUPER fucking weird tbh

marcos, Friday, 8 January 2016 16:13 (eight years ago) link

crazy that MPP was 7 years ago !
god I'm old...

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 8 January 2016 16:18 (eight years ago) link

just as Nirvana inspired millions to play strats & DS-1's, the AC inspired thousands to use SP-303's and 404's

flappy bird, Friday, 8 January 2016 19:01 (eight years ago) link

So the cover of fall be kind is so creepy. the shadow of an axe being swung overhead.
