i genuinely think "junior dad" is a masterpiece for both lou and metallica and i'm glad he got to make it before he passed and i really enjoy this album as a whole maybe give or take "little dog"

sinister porpoise (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:16 (nine years ago) link

^^ otm, "Junior Dad" is an all-time great Lou Reed song, fuiud

still crazy to me that his keyboardist was the dude from barenaked ladies. have we dealt with that.

tylerw, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:31 (nine years ago) link

I like the Lou Reed touring versions a lot more than the Loutallica ones. :/

anyway i listened to lulu last night and it's still great. all those eerie moments when metallica scale back in "frustration"

the riff of "dragon"

lots of anti-lulu sentiment in those scott o))) threads

possibly because it contains line like “I swallow your sharpest cutter like a coloured man’s dick.”

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Thursday, 3 July 2014 13:56 (nine years ago) link

that position i get, feel like everyone else's gripe is that this isn't their preferred version of old guy yelling over primal metal riffs and avant garde passages

which i also get

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 July 2014 14:06 (nine years ago) link

honestly in my memory it was basically something the internet was prepared to LOL about and became a meme and a lot of ppl never even really heard it or engaged w/it

sinister porpoise (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 July 2014 18:13 (nine years ago) link

yeah. i'd go so far as to say that way more people heard just the preview snippet of "The View" than ever heard the full song, much less the full album.

some dude, Thursday, 3 July 2014 18:20 (nine years ago) link

i try to not begrudge ppl not engaging with it bc on many levels it's very repellent, as alternately pretty and exquisitely grotesque i find it. but imo the distaste for it is often overstated. it's an avant garde record, it's probably kirk hammett's finest moment as a guitarist, it's probably the only time lars' drumming has made any sense to me (he's the other lead singer on this record), and the lyrics (when they're not inexcusable, for instance the line dan isolates) are packed with gorgeous phrasing

psychic savagery

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 July 2014 18:22 (nine years ago) link

i keep saying "avant garde" which is unnecessarily reductive bc this also works as a really expansive sequel to ecstasy, so it's functionally a lou reed record with some great metallica riffs

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 July 2014 18:33 (nine years ago) link

ha was just going to say that the lyrics on lulu are pretty of a piece w/ parts of ecstasy and the raven... i don't know, i almost think it's too bad lou didn't make a couple more records in that timespan. i increasingly feel as if he was really onto something.

tylerw, Thursday, 3 July 2014 18:34 (nine years ago) link

haha yeah people are like "LULU is so nuts" and i'm not even sure it's the most bonkers record he released in the 2000s! (aka Raven)

sinister porpoise (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 July 2014 19:04 (nine years ago) link

Yeah Lulu certainly wasn't such a bolt from out of the blue if you had even been sort of following Lou in last 15 yrs...that was one of the best things about Lulu, is it forced people in the mainstream who either didn't know shit about Lou or only knew "Perfect Day" / "Walk on the Wild Side" to contend with him now and all of his wonderful weirdness.

But Tyler's dead on about Lulu being a piece with Ecstasy for sure..."Like a Possum" for inst

Also, Lulu threads bringing out all the Lulu stans

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 3 July 2014 20:11 (nine years ago) link

yeah I guess I've always felt "Walk on the Wild Side" was treading close to a line of (perhaps unintended) hostility that I didn't want to deal with so hearing from people who have been doing deep Lou dives that shit like "I swallow your sharpest cutter like a coloured man’s dick," is not only par for the course but part of the appeal, well I think everyone can see where I'm going here

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Thursday, 3 July 2014 20:20 (nine years ago) link

so hearing from people who have been doing deep Lou dives that shit like "I swallow your sharpest cutter like a coloured man’s dick," is not only par for the course but part of the appeal, well I think everyone can see where I'm going here

i guess i wouldn't really say that at all, if you mean racial stuff?

i mean him just generally being insane

sinister porpoise (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 July 2014 20:29 (nine years ago) link

or not insane, i dunno, who knows i guess in some ways it was all very deliberate too

sinister porpoise (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 July 2014 20:29 (nine years ago) link

i should say not in the 2000s, he was way more problematic in the 70s

sinister porpoise (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 July 2014 20:30 (nine years ago) link

They're linked together though; it's castable as "insane" and "provocative" now because of the times we live in and the presumption that Lou Reed doesn't live in a vaguely racist bubble (which, as someone who hasn't ever followed him closely, I have no idea if he does or not; I've only made judgments based on the work I've encountered, some of which is hilarious but some of which has this undercurrent of "I should probably not scratch the surface of this too deeply if I don't want to ruin my day")

That being said, my own ignorance is acting against me here so I'll shut up; I more wanted to point out that some of the things that were called out about this album put it pretty firmly in the "do not engage" category for what are I hope obvious and understandable reasons.

Seems like he's just being Lou, jazz fan and author of "I Wanna Be Black," a 60s rocker/hipster send-up; also, you know, provocative (but not nec. ironic, not here): "In other words, I swallow your aharpest cutter avidly, Jim."

"And after Lou's death, David Bowie made a big point of saying to me, 'Listen, this is Lou’s greatest work; this is his masterpiece. Just wait, it will be like Berlin. It will take everyone a while to catch up.'

http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news/2015-04-20/david-bowie-hailed-lou-reed-metallica-lulu-album-as-genius

That's probably hyperbole, but all the same I continue to revisit and enjoy this album (even if it is really a bit too long). Love the production, Lou's delivery and Metallica's playing. Cool lyrics too, almost got into a fight with a friend recently because he kept mocking the "table" line lol.

niels, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 10:20 (nine years ago) link

haven't listened to the album since it came out, but this thread seriously belongs in a museum -- so much gold in here.

charlie h, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 13:17 (nine years ago) link

If I had been the newspaper boy delivering bad news to Don McLean's doorstep about Buddy Holly, and he asked me, "Will anything good ever come out of this tragic event?" - I would've said yes and handed him a vinyl copy of LULU.

pplains, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 13:19 (nine years ago) link

I've been listening to this record a lot recently. Usually only about half of it at any given go, but I skip different tracks each time, and I never skip the last two tracks. 'Dragon' is just as great as 'Junior Dad'.

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 18:16 (nine years ago) link

listening listening to this right now, sounding so good

more and more it's so great that this crazy record was Lou's final statement.
kind of surprised there haven't been more archival things released though -- I guess the VU reissue train keeps a rollin, but wouldn't mind if there were some expanded reissues. You know, The Complete Lulu Sessions (12 discs at least).
