that's really good. kind of an early ymo sound there.

The choreography is what's impressive to me!

hurricane weather (forapper), Friday, 28 March 2014 22:18 (ten years ago) link

Actually I don't listen to that much K-indie, just enough to know that retro-80s and electro-pop were Things for a while. Maybe someone else can answer your question, ∞.

hurricane weather (forapper), Friday, 28 March 2014 22:20 (ten years ago) link

hah, yeah! also really good! (x-post)

original bgm, Friday, 28 March 2014 22:20 (ten years ago) link

@forapper, cheers. That Chi Chi tune did the trick. That's the general vibe I'm looking for. I'll check out her album.

Had to stop that Litter video because I kind of hate The Killers.

Philtre was cool, as is Mirror Boy, but singing would definitely be nice.

I really need to learn Korean.

Chi Chi are an idol group and they're disbanded, sadly :( Their track <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93Y8B9p6uPc";>Love is Energy</a> is quite good as well.

Sweet, forapper! Love that there is such a strong modulation on that track.

You're my k-pop hook-up, bro!

I'm going to listen to their albums.

BTW SPEED-Zombie Party is a lot of fun, in a Why-So-Serious-was-too-serious-and-not-Michael-Jackson-indebted-enough kind of way. It's also good for exercise! (http://youtu.be/_tXdPuQTBls)

this movie looks sooo terrible, but I've also seen every Step Up movie and this can't be any worse than the second one. looking forward to seeing it someday. :D

Roz, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 20:44 (ten years ago) link

I've seen it twice already, heh. The plot hardly registers, cutout cardboard characters and all, except for its silliness. Derek and BoA have chemistry together despite the script though and the reason to watch this is scene after scene of BoA dancing around film sets, which is a glorious thing.

abcfsk, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 21:01 (ten years ago) link

lol no one watches dance movies for the plot anyway.

Roz, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 21:11 (ten years ago) link

meanwhile, you all know how much I love Infinite/Sweetune and all their maximalist gloriousness, so here's the instrumental version of their 2011 hit "Before the Dawn" - the video is a reedited version of the original MV.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdylDFkamDM

I don't know why they decided to release an instrumental album at all, especially since the whole point of Infinite imo is anthemic choruses sung in perfect harmony. But I guess I'm here for all the OTT videos too. XD

Roz, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 22:06 (ten years ago) link

@forapper, I've not been ignoring you. You've just given me a lot to work with!

I've been listening to a lot of music :S

That Blady track is really good!

So is Speed, but I don't think it'll suit my exercising regime when I'm lifting over 100 lbs of iron :)

Lotsa intervening life events, but, with the help of David Frazer (as usual), I was on the Crayon Pop's Crayon Trot move as it was happening, here, here, here (where I mistakenly thought they were also the ones in elegant attire rather than just the ones in old aunty attire), and here.

My favorite Neon Bunny track is "First Love" (I haven't heard all of her records, but this was the ending track on her 2012 EP, Happy Ending).

Neon Bunny is a big hole in the singles jukebox review-o-graphy

Speaking as the person who suggests most of the K-Pop covered there, I had't heard of them! I will check them out.

Iain Mew (if), Wednesday, 9 April 2014 10:50 (ten years ago) link

Yeah she's on her own label I think, not a big player in k-pop per se but has received quite a bit of attention on non-kpop sites. Released a single last month, everything else she's done is great as well.

Roz, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 07:50 (ten years ago) link

So I went back to Seoul again this past week for vacation, since I didn't get enough the first time

Having had a real chance to walk around for a week, I'd say I heard (playing in retail shops) 70% songs from CRUSH, 20% Mr.Mr. (just the single) and about 10% other

Strangely at all the k-pop merch stores I went to it was really hard to find much of 2NE1 anything

, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 08:02 (ten years ago) link

I don't know if I can get behind that Block B single, and I say that as someone with diagnosed ADD. On the other hand, if Zico was helping out with SPEED, it would explain a lot.

hurricane weather (forapper), Thursday, 17 April 2014 02:01 (ten years ago) link

I think I played it ten times in a row but can't seem to recall anything about the song after. Great video though.

actually, i don't think I've liked any Block B song since Nilili Mambo - they're a talented and interesting group but they always seem better in concept than execution.

Roz, Thursday, 17 April 2014 12:50 (ten years ago) link

Very Good grew on me live, and I like the songs Zico produced for D-Unit. But yeah, same. They're lucky they came to an agreement with Brand New Stardom so they can still do Nalina at their concerts.

Rumors that scenes from Jiyeon (T-ara)'s solo MV are being scrapped because they show her drowning in a box of water on set, in light of the ferry disaster.

And this is old, but decent: http://youtu.be/QYMpINYh4pk 100% are always putting out singles that are squarely boyband but just that bit above average, maybe because the singing is solid.

Looks like Spring is cancelled in S. Korea this year - the April/May festivals and the lovestruck idol music - but here's a Spring song from the remaining 2/4 of Offroad that's not half bad:

Every track on the Instant Downloads Top 10 chart is an EXO track right now... that must be why SM decided to put 5 songs on each of the 2 versions of their (Underdogs produced) mini.

hurricane weather (forapper), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 23:31 (nine years ago) link

Here's the mini: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wbohqf64mNA&list=PLdFtvQzKN-ok6F9mbrplsKbimpEKVy5yz

Besides the single, Moonlight and Thunder are the standout tracks.

hurricane weather (forapper), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 23:37 (nine years ago) link

Overdose is pretty good. Pre-chorus and chorus packs a punch. Another case of the complex SM in-house/ foreign team co-production

great song, just wished it belonged to a less boring group. EXO are so goddamn bland, but it works for them I guess.

Roz, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 16:38 (nine years ago) link

EXO aren't bland, but you have to dig a bit - their image is even more tightly controlled/they're under even tighter lockdown than most idols.

The key to what's interesting about EXO is following EXO-M on Chinese TV, and following the Chinese members (especially Kris & Tao) on weibo, because those outlets are less tightly controlled (and Tao can't be tamed).

In general this group spent a bit *too* long in media training, and errs a bit *too* much on the side of not giving offense, but there's some fairly nutty stuff going on if you look a bit closer.
