Not entirely true, the latest Gates record doubled the 1st week sales of his last. They're going for a slow grind i think

Chance's situation isn't confusing at all afaik; he simply hasn't signed

So, how long before APG completely rebrands? lol

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 28 March 2014 00:07 (ten years ago) link

Chance's situation is confusing in the sense that I can't even tell if he's planning to sign or what shape his next project will take. Which is kinda cool, but still.

I hope Gates's strategy is building to a really good career but I fear it won't, don't think anything is a given right now.

some dude, Friday, 28 March 2014 00:34 (ten years ago) link

Thug's Weezy fixation makes sense given he's essentially a more batshit version of him no? reductionist but still

wish I liked "Stoner," heard that on radio first time yesterday

nova, Friday, 28 March 2014 01:34 (ten years ago) link

chance is super interesting because i do feel like he's at the point where he could drop a single and do real numbers with no label

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 28 March 2014 02:23 (ten years ago) link

like, earl did 49k in his first week. ferg did 32k in his first week.

i feel like chance could roll out his "debut album" or whatever w/o no label and land somewhere in between those two numbers

obviously his ce

whoops

obviously his ceiling might be higher if he went the full label route but i truly could see him doing something bizarre since he's already made it this far. maybe he'll sign to skrillex's label or something super boutique that could give him some backing while allowing him to do basically what he does now on the business & creative side.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 28 March 2014 02:26 (ten years ago) link

anyway on the point of thug i agree with evan that all of this shouldn't be a huge impediment to his career if he continues on this trajectory, but it certainly shows the importance of having your business strategy straight from the jump in a music industry climate like this one

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 28 March 2014 02:28 (ten years ago) link

it's just kinda sad because it's like Gucci's indifferent, self-destructive attitude towards business is almost literally contagiously spreading to other artists

some dude, Friday, 28 March 2014 11:03 (ten years ago) link

I'm kind of worried that Chance doesn't have another 'Acid Rap' in him :\

, Friday, 28 March 2014 11:10 (ten years ago) link

yeah part of me wonders that, too. gonna remain optimistic, though, the song on Dedication 5 was crazy.

Dude is so young and so smart and so confident in his voice. He might not make another Acid Rap, but I could easily see him surpassing it.

voodoo chili, Friday, 28 March 2014 12:02 (ten years ago) link

the most fucked up part about that is that the "savior" in his life is birdman, who is notorious for fucking every single one of his artists -- including his "son" -- out of royalty money

chance the rapper's situation is an interesting comparison to this

The cruelest April Fool's Day joke is that neither Thugga Mane La Flare or Brick Factory Vol. 1 came out

Evan R, Friday, 4 April 2014 17:51 (ten years ago) link

didn't come out when announced to come out but it's not like 1017 doesn't generally put out what they say they're gonna put out sooner or later

some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 20:05 (ten years ago) link

True, I'm just starved for mixtapes right now. I burn through them so fast these days and wanted some new ones I could look forward to listening to at the gym. I am very, very spoiled.

Evan R, Friday, 4 April 2014 20:19 (ten years ago) link

I lost the will to keep up with Jandek Mane's output a long time ago, hopefully one of y'all true believers will let me know when there's a song I wouldn't wanna miss out on

some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 20:23 (ten years ago) link

He hasn't put out anything essential since his mini-renaissance in 2012, but even with the dip in quality and consistency I started to grow dependent on his near constant releases last year, so his imprisonment came as a blow to me. The good news is he's sounded a lot sharper on the handful of tracks he's teased this year; seems like he was in pretty good form right before he went back to jail.

Evan R, Friday, 4 April 2014 20:30 (ten years ago) link

If Gucci is doing real jail time, and he might be, the thing I'm going to miss more than his output is his ear for new talent. Even during his own creative ruts he's been incredible as developing protege rappers and producers, to the point where him being sidelined feels like a big blow to Atlanta's entire farm system

Evan R, Friday, 4 April 2014 20:33 (ten years ago) link

yeah feel like he was putting together a real cool scene w scooter and thugger

lag∞n, Friday, 4 April 2014 20:35 (ten years ago) link

Scooter is absolutely slaying lately. "Disfunction" is one of my fav tracks of the year, and SL2 is super solid, too.

And Peewee Longway also seems to be clawing his way out of the second tier.

Evan R, Friday, 4 April 2014 20:38 (ten years ago) link

Pffffft! Hell Yes and Point In My Life are classics.

Gucci's had a 1/15 good song ratio for about 3 years

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 4 April 2014 23:37 (ten years ago) link

so 80 good songs in 3 years, that's not bad

Just a free mixtape bt Thugga Mane La Flare ws OK at first but by like four tracks in just boringly halfassed

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Monday, 21 April 2014 16:17 (ten years ago) link

Haven't been able to get it this yet either; a lot of it is a disjointed mess. Thug doesn't sound sharp at all, and even when he does he's on such a different wavelength from Gucci it just doesn't work.

"Siblings" is a nice throwback to the ICFN era, so much so that it might be a leftover from that era

Evan R, Monday, 21 April 2014 16:31 (ten years ago) link

"Thug doesn't sound sharp at all" i'm saying. Moments here I like though, and the beats are good -- def. better than that Bloody Jay collab tape which I got nothing out of

it is cool to have a new rapper (well I didn't get into 1017 Thug 'til after the fact) I'm genuinely excited about though, cuz depending on possibly past-their-prime legends is bad for your health

nova, Monday, 21 April 2014 21:49 (ten years ago) link

The first 5 tracks are all straight fire, no clue what you guys are talking about

rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 21 April 2014 21:52 (ten years ago) link

Loving Young Thugga Mane Laflare with a passion

longneck, Monday, 21 April 2014 21:58 (ten years ago) link

what am i talking about? i meant 7 tracks

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 05:05 (ten years ago) link

new mixtape sounds pretty good to me. I'm only just starting/trying to get into Young Thug though. but this stuff is a lot better than "Stoner" to me. "Don't Look at Me" is sick.

dmr, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:18 (ten years ago) link

I've warmed to the opening stretch after hearing it on actual headphones. Comes out pretty strong, and as a whole it's leaps above Black Portland. But the final half still feels like Gucci verses copied and pasted onto Thug tracks, or vice versa

Evan R, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:44 (ten years ago) link

gucci verses are fire too though

she look like a bag of money, bag of kush or bag of them bricks

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:46 (ten years ago) link

Closing song is great.

longneck, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:47 (ten years ago) link

Gucci cracking his iPhone screen is my favorite so far

Evan R, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:53 (ten years ago) link

I think they have p good chemistry: Gucci all laid back and repetitive, Thug restless, all over the place. It makes more sense than most Gucci collabos.

longneck, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 22:04 (ten years ago) link

I like "OMG BRO." the other "OMG" not so much

nova, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 22:09 (ten years ago) link

what's up with there being more tracks listed on the back cover image vs. the actual download too, those other three songs actually exist
