I wonder if sexism is at all involved?!?!

probably. but she also went overboard with publicizing it, calling a hatecrime etc., which upped the ante a bit.

Jason McDonald, an Internet marketing consultant at JM Internet Group in San Jose, said Slocum's emergence comes as the public is looking for something tangible to latch onto in the debate over Glass.

"People are quick to condemn the person, or come to a person's defense, because they really hit a nerve on an issue," McDonald said. "In this case, she's become a flash point. She's like the guy in font of the tank at Tiananmen Square."

The thing is I already have the bias that a person who would wear google glass into a bar like that would have to be an asshole, and that video just confirms my bias

is that locution, with no articles, no possessive pronouns, meant to make it more like a name (but all glassfaces happen to call it by the same name, like a million jerks who name their dogs 'rex') or more like every user's face is in contact with one and the same Glass for which they are just meat vehicles

http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/14/tech/mobile/google-glass-attack/index.html

He was wearing, but not using, the eyewear "when a person put their hand on my face and yelled, 'Glass!' In an instant, the person was sprinting away, Google Glass in hand."

Russell says he ran after the woman, who then "pivoted, shifting their weight to put all of their momentum into an overhand swing. The Google Glass smashed into the ground, and they ran in another direction."

In the column, Russell said he thinks the protest and attack Friday were linked, though he does not think the woman who did it was at the march.

"My love for gadgets makes me look and sound like one of the people whom residents of the city have come to feel oppressed by," he wrote.
"The individual who smashed my Google Glass on Friday -- because of political beliefs or a personal impact that has been made by the tech industry -- felt that it was appropriate to destroy my personal property in protest against what I seemed to stand for, based on my appearance; never mind the irony in choosing to assault someone based on their appearance as a way to preserve San Francisco's culture," he wrote.
In recent months, tensions have run high in San Francisco over the perceived role that tech-industry giants have had on the city. Protesters complain that an influx of highly paid tech workers is driving up rents, forcing out longtime residents and robbing the city of its famously eccentric character.

Most of the anti-tech fervor has focused on big-name companies such as Google and Twitter and the private bus systems that ferry their employees from the city to various corporate headquarters in Silicon Valley.

But individual employees are increasingly being targeted, too.

Just last week, protesters picketed in front of the private home of Kevin Rose, co-founder of Digg and now a partner with Google Ventures. The protesters, who posted signs calling Rose a "parasite," claimed his group, which helps Google decide which startups to invest money in, has helped to inflate prices in the city.

i don't understand how google glass is supposed to work, beyond it being an easier way to use, say, a gps, or as a convenient means of getting quick answers read back to you, in lieu of a google search where you stare at a monitor and operate a keyboard. but, if i want to read a newspaper or research a topic or play a game online, google glass isn't helpful at all, is it? it seems too close to your face to have any useful visual display applications.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 00:10 (ten years ago) link

Encountered my first Glass-wearer a couple of weeks ago at a medium-sized social event in NYC. The crowd there was mostly tech-ignorant - maybe a few people there were aware of the product but there was no rioting. Once you notice them, you're constantly aware of their presence - like when you first notice workplace surveillance cameras.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 00:11 (ten years ago) link

Do these things only respond to the masters voice? Cause otherwise you could prank people wearing them pretty easily

you have to have sex twice, in exactly the same way; the first time it's the woman wearing the google glass and the second time it's the guy, then you edit together and it looks like nobody's wearing it

Happy to live in a small town where I'm not likely to meet anyone wearing these in a good long while yet.

Are there any good articles about what in the above-linked article is referred to as "the anti-tech fervor" in SF? That's the side of these recent stories that has struck me as most interesting. I gather it's in large part about how lots of rich technology workers have made the city more expensive and difficult to lie in for everyone else. Would love to see read more about that and about what other sides there are to the hostility.

https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/11/20959066/apple-augmented-reality-ar-headset-glasses-rumors-reported-release-date

Apple plans to release its first augmented reality headset in 2022, followed by a smaller device — a pair of AR glasses — in 2023, according to a new report from The Information.

Apple’s entry into the world of augmented reality has long been rumored, with many in the tech world seeing AR and VR as the next big platforms after mobile. But an exact entry date has been unclear, with some analysts suggesting a 2020 launch. Citing internal presentations made at Apple’s headquarters, The Information pushes this rumored timeline back to 2022, presumably due to difficulties in developing the technology.

As well as the new timeline, The Information’s report offers new detail about Apple’s AR headset, codenamed N301. The device supposedly resembles a slimmer version of the Oculus Quest, a virtual reality headset released in May. It has AR and VR capabilities, uses external cameras to map the user’s surroundings (including the outlines of people, furniture, and rooms), and has a high-resolution display to show information and blend virtual objects with the real world. Employees were told that the company would be reaching out to developers to build software for the headset from 2021.

After Apple has built this larger headset it plans to release a smaller pair of AR glasses. Unlike the headset, these will be designed to be worn for longer periods of time, with The Information reporting that “current prototypes look like high-priced sunglasses with thick frames that house the battery and chips,” according to a person who has seen prototypes. Apple has also reportedly explored lenses that darken when in operation, to signal to observers that the user is otherwise occupied.
