where is my night in white satin armour?!?!

one month passes...

Uncle Junior: What are we, children? Anyway, at our age it's enough surprise we're still alive every morning.

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 2 May 2014 19:11 (ten years ago) link

another piece of evidence for the tony is dead theory (which is true), is that david chase has always said he'd never do a sopranos sequel, but that he might be open to a prequel. PRETTY BIG HINT THERE>

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 2 May 2014 19:36 (ten years ago) link

well yeah

of course there's also one other major impediment to a sequel now

PLATYPUS OF DOOM (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 2 May 2014 19:38 (ten years ago) link

They could just get Patton Oswalt to substitute.

That's So (Eazy), Friday, 2 May 2014 20:38 (ten years ago) link

I think there is a lot to be said for Gilligan's approach as a show-runner as opposed to Chase's rampant egotism and it isn't like he has done anything worthwhile since The Sopranos. That 60's movie was such rinse.

"show-runner"

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 2 May 2014 21:34 (ten years ago) link

Well I just read that awful Difficult Men book, that is the term they use.

under the cobblestones, le dogshit (xelab), Friday, 2 May 2014 21:39 (ten years ago) link

term has been commonplace since I heard it used re The Simpsons, like, 15 years ago

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Friday, 2 May 2014 21:53 (ten years ago) link

is it awful? my friend gave it to me.

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 3 May 2014 05:30 (ten years ago) link

and im familiar with the term, its just one of those things that bugs me

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 3 May 2014 05:30 (ten years ago) link

I just started watching this from Ep 1 for the first time and it's amazing and I love it.

I'd say the same abt Mad Men bt I can't work out what thread to say it in

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Saturday, 3 May 2014 16:22 (ten years ago) link

mad men definitely doesn't belong in the same conversation as the sopranos, that much is for sure

write 500 words of song (sleepingbag), Saturday, 3 May 2014 16:29 (ten years ago) link

Oh don't let's start

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Saturday, 3 May 2014 16:40 (ten years ago) link

considering it explores some of the same themes, it's written by one of the sopranos guys, and chase had a great deal w/ getting it on the air i'd say it belongs in the same conversation

and yet...here it is!!!!

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Saturday, 3 May 2014 16:45 (ten years ago) link

Apparently Weiner's film is awful too. At least Terence Winter has Wolf of Wall Street and, uh, the 50 Cent movie

don't read anything in this thread.

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 3 May 2014 16:58 (ten years ago) link

Weiner's film is bad? :(

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Saturday, 3 May 2014 17:05 (ten years ago) link

And yeah that ws just a "I too am freshly watching an iconic recent TV show" post, bt it does have some relevance

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Saturday, 3 May 2014 17:06 (ten years ago) link

"is it awful? my friend gave it to me."

Awful is way harsh, the Chase and Weiner chapters are quite illuminating, the Burns/Simon chapters are dull and worthy, kind of like watching Treme.

under the cobblestones, le dogshit (xelab), Saturday, 3 May 2014 17:35 (ten years ago) link

What film did weiner make?

PLATYPUS OF DOOM (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 3 May 2014 18:35 (ten years ago) link

many overpriced ones sold exclusively in seedy storefronts iirc

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Saturday, 3 May 2014 18:40 (ten years ago) link

You Are Here, a lame comedy with Owen Wilsen, across the board bad reviews so far.

under the cobblestones, le dogshit (xelab), Saturday, 3 May 2014 18:46 (ten years ago) link

haha he made a comedy? yeah i could see that not working

balls, Saturday, 3 May 2014 18:47 (ten years ago) link

one month passes...

rewatched the pilot this morning on Season 1 library discs. Now, um, the next 12 eps before it's due Saturday.

Gandolfini looks trim by later standards. :/

it IS v funny btw -- the goon and the lawyer taking the deadbeat for a walk over the Paterson Falls bridge... Carmela's priest giving Gordon Willis a shoutout for the Godfathers...

what prompted you to finally get around to this

Οὖτις, Thursday, 5 June 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link

Of the cable shows ppl hype, this is the oldest and most likely to appeal to me (born & bred in NNJ).

Also I taped the first 3-4 seasons when I had HBO and just never watched the tapes.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 June 2014 20:51 (nine years ago) link

you can totally watch Season 1 in 3 days. I have faith in you.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 5 June 2014 20:54 (nine years ago) link

and see four Mizoguchi films and Pissed Jeans?

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 June 2014 21:03 (nine years ago) link

you can allow yourself toilet breaks

mikelovestfu (wins), Thursday, 5 June 2014 21:04 (nine years ago) link

Jealous of Morbs for getting to experience this for the first time

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 6 June 2014 13:19 (nine years ago) link

yeah, this aint happening right now. Do you think i've even opened my Ford at Fox box, or the Rossellini-Bergman set I got at Christmas? noooope.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 June 2014 21:36 (nine years ago) link

maybe I will watch the first season again for you

Οὖτις, Friday, 6 June 2014 21:37 (nine years ago) link

MORBZ

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 7 June 2014 14:57 (nine years ago) link

Thru 4 episodes, the therapy scenes are my least favorite. Too "on the nose." also Lorraine Bracco's diction/line readings are weird.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 7 June 2014 16:24 (nine years ago) link

It moves beyond that format more in later seasons

Neanderthal, Saturday, 7 June 2014 16:29 (nine years ago) link

i would imagine so

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 7 June 2014 16:32 (nine years ago) link

Yeah that becomes less of a focus

Οὖτις, Saturday, 7 June 2014 16:34 (nine years ago) link

i like that this series makes room in its cast for the two least famous members of the main foursome from 'mean streets'. though proval has a huge role as opposed to richard romanus' minor appearances.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Saturday, 7 June 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

i need to rewatch this ASAP. my wife has only seen a few episodes here and there, and the last half of season 6. i wonder if i'd like it more, maybe the relatively dead episodes that pop up in the middle of the series (season 3 has a few iirc?) wouldn't bother me as much.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Saturday, 7 June 2014 16:39 (nine years ago) link

I figure Morbz would at least appreciate kindred spirit nancy marchand

Οὖτις, Saturday, 7 June 2014 16:41 (nine years ago) link

you strike me as more of a depressed panicky old lady

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 7 June 2014 17:08 (nine years ago) link

I am watching this for the first time. Is one of the kids that chases Tony in the flashback scene at the fair the same actor who would go on to play Wallace from the Wire? I liked the Mehlfi family therapist, then realized that he also had a bit part in season 4 of The Wire.

sarahell, Saturday, 7 June 2014 20:46 (nine years ago) link

yes

Number None, Saturday, 7 June 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link

Bodie is in the second episode

Number None, Saturday, 7 June 2014 20:49 (nine years ago) link

i pretty much know all the final-season resolutions and think it's kind of YV-hilarious that they didnt take care of Christopher in the fourth episode of the first year.
