after the new ep went up last week i noticed that episode 2 (aka "heidi", aka Hipster Grifter episode) was taken offline for a few days

its back up now, and it must have been down because of a copyright dispute because unfortunately the Arthur Russell song has been replaced with something that doesn't work nearly as well :-(

i think the music in "Olivia" (ep5) had its music changed too but i cant recall what it was previously

one month passes...

Good for the show, but doesn't Vimeo on Demand mean that you have to pay to watch it?

hm i didnt notice that

i wouldnt mind paying a few bucks to see new HM eps though, but it might make it harder to turn new people on to it

this show is great! thanks gr80

marcos, Sunday, 8 June 2014 00:57 (nine years ago) link

seriously this is really good! almost through the whole series. thought they were all going to be comedy but many of them aren't

marcos, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:30 (nine years ago) link

kind of relieved i don't know anybody like that polyphasic sleeper dude, dude was fucked

marcos, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:31 (nine years ago) link

gotta say though that the naming convention is kind of annoying, makes it hard to keep track of which episode is which

marcos, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:33 (nine years ago) link

"qasim" is def the least comedy but its still comedy imo

also my fave ep, except for maybe "rachel"

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:34 (nine years ago) link

the ep w/ connan mockasin tunes may be my favorite so far

also i'm pretty impressed w/ how effective the show is w/ a such a short format, so much visual information is packed in the first couple minutes of every episode

marcos, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:39 (nine years ago) link

I am sad that my favorite episode has a really gross joke abt child molestation

aaliyah papi (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:56 (nine years ago) link

the one w/ the assholes? yea they should've figured something else out

marcos, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:58 (nine years ago) link

it's the one I always want to show people but never do bcz SPOILER ALERT a lot of ppl have been molested as children that shit's not fucking funny

aaliyah papi (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 22:07 (nine years ago) link

did that one use to have a grimes song that's since been replaced?

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 22:08 (nine years ago) link

is there a thread for solid web series? The Restaurant on youtube is good

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 22:20 (nine years ago) link

should we do a "actually good web series 2014" thread?

otm! that's my favorite one too and that joke was so weirdly mean-spirited and made it one of those things that i really enjoy but don't really recommend to that many people

me too

marcos, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 17:42 (nine years ago) link

also weird to see ben sinclair w/o a plaid shirt and deep-neck T

marcos, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 18:03 (nine years ago) link

his mannerisms - esp his eyes - remind me a bit of peter krause

ogmor, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 18:48 (nine years ago) link

totally late to this show; the helen episode kinda broke my heart

yea :(

also the casting for this show is incredible, huh? kind of feel like i know all of these characters just by watching them in these short episodes. that annoying fro-haired dude in "dinah" especially.

marcos, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 18:12 (nine years ago) link

binge watching all of them today. The Hannibal episode!
kinda bummed that I got turned onto this by Nussbaum in the NYorker; I am officially past my sell by date

Qasim!

all done. amazed at how empathic, honest and kind these are; the bar keeps getting raised.
kinda wish i had been a bit more patient... i want eight more of these like NOW

i know, i blew through them in like 2 days.

marcos, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 20:01 (nine years ago) link

ben sinclair gives so much grounding to the show, too, his dealer character is so compassionate to all the characters (when they deserve it at least) and lets their weirdness blossom

marcos, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 20:02 (nine years ago) link

it's sex positive without assuming that people who fuck a lot are somehow more free

"so is this like some pick-up artist shit?"
"oh no i don't do that i'm a proud asexual"

marcos, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

what episode do yall use to get people into this show? the assholes one is good but as mentioned upthread the molestation joke is an off-note... maybe "heidi" but the hipster grifter thing is maybe too ripped from the headlines... "rachel" is the best all-around imo but it's a little long.

adam, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 22:09 (nine years ago) link

i usually tell ppl to go stevie -> heidi -> olivia -> rachael -> qasim

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 23:05 (nine years ago) link

start from the beginning to see how it evolves

matilda is a top 5 for me

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 04:04 (nine years ago) link

agree with starting from the beginning but alternately I'm feeling:

trixie -> brad pitts -> helen -> jonathan -> matilda -> dinah -> elijah -> quasim -> rachel

I like how it goes from being light hearted and funny to like really earnest and tragic at times

aaliyah papi (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 12:12 (nine years ago) link

otm, if you start at the beginning then helen and jonathan hit you pretty hard b/c you are not expecting them

marcos, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 13:50 (nine years ago) link

kinda bummed that vimeo ppv is their big break, was hoping they'd get a comedy central or HBO deal

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:01 (nine years ago) link

they were in discussions with FX but I guess it didn't work out

Number None, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:27 (nine years ago) link

does anyone have hard info on how "premium" vimeo works? because i love this show but wtf i am not paying for a new subscription solely to see this unless it is hella minimal.

Series 1: meh episodes - Meth(od), Selfie

I get why one wouldn't, but I actually like the hyper-annoying friend couple in Meth(od). The segment with the british actors pretending to be american meatheads falls flat though, that should have been a 2 minute throwaway joke at most. And then I really don't like the sex party / bickering couple segment in Museebat, which I think uniquely and distractingly features three more-recognizable-than-usual actors.

I'll have to check the rest of your list once I catch up rewatching.

rob, Saturday, 30 January 2021 21:31 (three years ago) link

I should probably cut Meth(od) some slack as having some good qualities , but it's only episode I skipped when I rewatched the whole collection over Xmas as I just couldn't get past the beginning.. And it was such a disappointment as HBO opener.

Luna Schlosser, Sunday, 31 January 2021 20:37 (three years ago) link

def a hugely perplexing decision to launch the series with that episode, the webseries is mostly warm and inviting and even the part I do like is HM at its most acidic

rob, Sunday, 31 January 2021 20:42 (three years ago) link

the part *of Meth)od)*

rob, Sunday, 31 January 2021 20:42 (three years ago) link

Really miss this show sometimes
