Are these cars just new in the US? They were to be seen frequently in London at least five years ago, maybe even more.

they're new in the u.s., but only the fortwo line is being sold here at the moment. they're selling really well, apparently!

Smart cars are everywhere in Oxford/London. I think you get one when you qualify as an estate agent.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 14:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i dont know, those crash test ratings dont look so hot to me

sunny successor, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:07 (fifteen years ago) link

"Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the neck and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the the dummy's head were high when it hit the steering wheel through the airbag, indicating that head injuries would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would also be possible. Head acceleration from the roof rail hit was negligible.

"

fail

judging a car by how it looks ls like judging a foodstuff on how it feels when rubbed against your bottom

Granny Dainger, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:19 (fifteen years ago) link

wtf cmon that is not true at all - aesthetics is not absent from car judgement in any way

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I could wipe my ass with one of those smart cars.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:27 (fifteen years ago) link

sunny successor, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 15:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Apparently, it takes almost nothing to total one.

I like that we have hijacked "truth bombs" to discuss the attractiveness and crash safety of the Chevy Nova vs the Smart ForTwo btw

All because I said nobody would time travel to 1978 and Whiney G recognized that to be a complete fact

this was a drunken debate with one of my friends awhile back that swore he was saying Stan!

carne asada, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Apparently, it takes almost nothing to total one.

This is true of pretty much all modern cars. The right rear passenger door on my Dodge truck is completely fucked because I let my grandfather back it around a corner and he went up against a very stumpy bush. At maybe 5mph A BUSH gouged two big dents in the door.

I think maybe the ease of totalling them actually has something to do with why they're safer, actually? Energy transfer, etc..

a smart car almost hit me on my bike today b/c the guy over-shot a stop sign. i didn't really know how to feel. because i have cruelly judged the smart car as generally impotent.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

the ease of totalling

i like this phrase

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:19 (fifteen years ago) link

an $11k car is by definition easier to total than one more expensive

This is not true.

Kerm, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

you can total it more efficiently
