LaRussa's spiel was they figured out after the second game of the series that the Sox were stealing signs, so they switched them up and got beat 1-0. I just figured it was LaRussa not liking being horribly beaten by a former employer making some excuses. "Oh it isn't that our pitching stinks and the Sox have a Clubber Lang lineup, it is the camera stealing signs in center field. Dave Duncan is a pitching coach genius."

Putting a healthy Thome in the middle of that lineup is just sick. It is a bit like when Ortiz took off in Boston a few years ago, they couldn't pitch around Manny anymore and it seemed the whole lineup improved. The White Sox were a good hitting lineup last year, but now they are a great hitting team.

I gotta tip my hat -- they are an awfully fun team. My, they love getting those clutch grand slams this week. Nice one, So Tagutchi.

I will be in Chicago next weekend and at the Monday, July 3 game vs. the Orioles. We are in Section 527 (thank you, StubHub). If Stormy or any other ILBBers will be there, email me, and would love to say hi before the fireworks.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 26 June 2006 14:56 (seventeen years ago) link

That's so Iguchi!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 June 2006 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Whoops! Not So Iguchi. Just a Tad Iguchi.

I think the Astros main strategy against the White Sox should be to not give up Grand Slams.

This weekend was ridiculous.

Very funny, Commissioner (took me a while)!

hey, ms. redwell! - i will be attending the July 3rd festivities. me and about 99 of my non-closest, semi-friends. My favorite bartender had been doing this thing where he buys a bunch of grouped tickets to the half-price Mondays, so there will be a large group of us there to root on the good guys. I will drop you a line!

Awesome -- email me!

Can somebody (Stormy Davis?) help me get my head around this team? Don't get me wrong, I think they're talented... but their seems to be something else going on with them (and I know I'm not the only one out there scratching my head).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 30 June 2006 17:45 (seventeen years ago) link

The Chicago White Sox acquired right-handed pitcher Mike MacDougal from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for minor-league pitchers Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes.

four weeks pass...
"When you play [expletive] [Johan] Santana, [Brad] Radke, [Francisco] Liriano, the guy from Cleveland ... [C.C.] Sabathia, all the other guys ... ah, [expletive]. If we played National League teams, the Central Division, we might win 150 games in that [expletive] league."
--Guillen

"They think I cheat? We faced two [expletive] good pitchers in the National League Central. Our division, they have to face [the Tigers' starting staff], then you go to the White Sox and face all our guys? When you're going to go to another team, you're going to go, 'Whew, where is Randy Johnson?' The American League Central? That's baseball right here. Go hard one after another."
--Guillen

"Good, I hope [they keep accusing us]. What happened in the playoffs and World Series? We won 1-0, 2-1. We won so many one-run games, more than anyone in baseball last year. You look at our No. 3, 4 and 5 [hitters], they are the best in baseball. If we're cheating, how come we [don't] help Brian Anderson or [Juan] Uribe?"
--Guillen

"We're cheating on the mound? Our pitching staff gets beat up once in awhile. They're mad. They can't admit that a Latino kicked their ass."
--Guillen

"That's why I love the guy next door. He doesn't give a [expletive]. He doesn't worry about this and that. You win, you kicked our butt. When they clinched in 2004, I was the first one to go over there and congratulate them because they beat us."
--Guillen, on Twins manager Ron Gardenhire

"'Oh, no, I don't like you because you kicked my ass?' Please. That's competition."
--Guillen

"That's why I don't get along with too many managers. Because they hate my [expletive] ass, because I don't kiss their ass, and I didn't kiss anyone's ass to get this job."
--Guillen

"Then they have a Mexican win the World Series in two years. And they're saying he doesn't have experience, he never managed in baseball before. Well, too [expletive] bad."
--Guillen

"What's the difference? No one knows the difference anyway."
--Guillen, after being reminded that he's Venezuelan

How come Jermaine Dye never did this as an A?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 24 August 2006 19:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Because he hates freedom. Also, he was pissed off that he fell to ROUND ELEVEN in our fantasy draft, and was all like 'payback. now.'

It's better than the Burnett & Zito & Schmidt deals, tho. Which is, um, setting the bar pretty low @ this point.

David R., Monday, 9 July 2007 14:40 (sixteen years ago) link

During a 58-game stretch, White Sox relievers posted a 3-13 record and a 7.52 earned-run average.

“I’m not calling them losers, but they’re not ready to win,” Guillen sniffed.

“It gets to the point where you just laugh,” White Sox starter Mark Buehrle said. “Knowing Kenny, I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole bullpen goes. They need to ship some guys out soon.”

I loves me a classic pitchers duel, and we've got one going on, but these WGN assholes make me wanna die. Dude's extended riff on Ty Cobb's penmanship was, uh, really something.

One minute, Guillen wondered why "people thought I was going to take my shirt off and go butt naked on Michigan Avenue" during the White Sox's victory parade, and the next, when it was suggested that Guillen leave it all and retire to his native Venezuela and get fat and happy, he scoffed.

"Because," Guillen explained, "my wife, when I have sex with her, wants to feel a good-looking man."
