I was thinking of trying to pick up a copy of Onimusha 3 tonight. Has anybody here played it? Is it worth picking up & is it okay to start with 3 if I haven't played the earlier ones?

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I was not too impressed with the Onimusha I rented. Not sure which one it was.

Buy them all and know love!

kv_nol, Thursday, 21 June 2007 12:00 (sixteen years ago) link

vice city stories is good?

never played either God of War, are they addictive/playable?

too often the "immersive" games only distract me until I get stuck at a level.

whereas a friend has Gears of War and we've been playing non stop cos it's quite easy.

Ronan, Thursday, 21 June 2007 12:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Very addictive! Very story based and linear so you can just go and get it over with.

I didn't know Gears of War was on PS2! Must track it down.

VCS is not SA but it's the best of the newer GTAs by a mile!

kv_nol, Thursday, 21 June 2007 13:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Re. God of War: if you play one before two it makes it way more satisfying when you start the second and play it through.

kv_nol, Thursday, 21 June 2007 13:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh it's not on PS2, Gears of War I mean. My friend's band gave a song to Xbox and got given a massive flightcase with an Xbox 360 and a built in flatscreen TV.

Gears of War is fucking incredible btw!

Ronan, Thursday, 21 June 2007 13:26 (sixteen years ago) link

just ordered God of War II for 23 Euro on Ebay.

Ronan, Thursday, 21 June 2007 13:42 (sixteen years ago) link

You will NOT regret it. So lush and so violent!

kv_nol, Thursday, 21 June 2007 14:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Not that violence is a good thing in and of itself.

Also SCORE for your friends!

kv_nol, Thursday, 21 June 2007 14:09 (sixteen years ago) link

i just finished Ico last night and was so impressed. i've never played a game like it (i guess tomb raider is the closest equivalent). have you played that Ronan? it is pretty "easy" once you realise the camera angles are telling you pretty much where to go.. very very few times do you have to replay any part of it (one of my least favourite aspects of the way most video games work)

i'm sucked in, though - need shadow of the colossus!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 22 June 2007 10:08 (sixteen years ago) link

one of the biggest revelations about Ico, which only came to me moments before finishing it, is that it works MUCH better if you discard the stubborn idea inherent to playing and "winning" most adventure and/or platform games that you must look for "secret" doorways, handles, etc. and generally run about like an attention-deficit idiot. in Ico things suddenly get a lot smoother if you just go with the flow. you won't be left in the lurch.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 22 June 2007 10:12 (sixteen years ago) link

gears of war is habit-forming

: /

czn, Friday, 22 June 2007 12:23 (sixteen years ago) link

how do you mean, habit-forming?

Ronan, Friday, 22 June 2007 13:09 (sixteen years ago) link

sorry, I think I may be addicted

in fact there's no think about it - even though it has it's problems, especially in online multiplayer, it's a great game

czn, Friday, 22 June 2007 13:10 (sixteen years ago) link

problems with it:

- lots of glitches (chainsawing ppl with guns other than the rifle; shooting will roadie-running (the fast run thing you do); running v.v. fast (2x roadie-run speed); weapon-sliding (still moving when picking up weapon))
- roadie-running still not ideal and often sucks you into cover when you don't want to
- can't shoot/melee people when they are chainsawing or kerb-stomping
- terrible terrible lag issues makes the host near untouchable
- attracts a host of ppl with bad attitudes (there are lots of racists and homophobes on live)

great things:
- great control system (only blighted by roadie-run teething problem) though should be customisable;
- balanced weapons;
- great maps with lots of cover and strategic opportunities;
- looks f'n amazing, even over live

gitaroo man

FLEETWOOD COZWN (cozwn), Saturday, 27 December 2008 02:22 (fifteen years ago) link

yah czn i beat it awhile ago. i'm actually playing through eternal poison right now (well, i will be when i get back home) but this thread is making me want to play through it again.

in the spirit of the thread title here is my T0P TEN PS2 RPGS:

01 Persona 3/FES
02 Dragon Quest VIII
03 Suikoden III
04 Dark Cloud 2
05 Rogue Galaxy
06 Odin Sphere
07 .hack - Parts 1-4: Infection to Quarantine
08 Growlanser V: Generations
09 Shadow Hearts
10 Xenosaga

limited myself to one title per series otherwise suikoden V would probably be on there too. same with some of the other shin megami/persona titles, probably nocturne.

FLEETWOOD COZWN (cozwn), Saturday, 27 December 2008 02:26 (fifteen years ago) link

seems kind of meh but i haven't played it either. xp to myself but the first three games on my list are str8 up must plays imo they make up part of the all time cannon for me just complete classics.

delicate mouse tune, crash of cat chords (Lamp), Saturday, 27 December 2008 02:37 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah wouldn't pay more than a few bucks for these games tbh

def going to track down a copy of persona 3; want to try project zero too, heard good things

FLEETWOOD COZWN (cozwn), Saturday, 27 December 2008 02:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I want to own Persona 3 really bad but it is still $30 at the used games store (used). wtf?!?!

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Saturday, 27 December 2008 19:00 (fifteen years ago) link

I ended up getting Rogue Galaxy for $18 instead.

anyone play breath of fire: dragon quarter?

cozwn, Saturday, 10 January 2009 12:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Kuon looks amazing!

hyggeligt, Monday, 12 January 2009 13:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Lamp, I'm surprised you rate Suikoden III above V, for me it's the opposite... either way though, I love Suikoden, and I don't even really play JRPGs anymore.

&U HAEV MY AXE LOL (Will M.), Monday, 12 January 2009 15:42 (fifteen years ago) link

rep harder for iii on story and looks - the trinity added a lot to the game for me and the secret chapters were sick. v had better gameplay but it was blockier and slower too so much less elegant.

boys are such ruffians! (Lamp), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 05:05 (fifteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...

anyone ever play the red star? pretty dope imo, it's like a cross between streets of rage style scrolling button masher and ikaruga bullet hell shmup

cozwn, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 00:32 (fifteen years ago) link

def worth it if you can pick it up for under £3

cozwn, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 00:33 (fifteen years ago) link

anyone got PAL copies of these they're looking to get rid of

mgs3: subsistence
zone of the enders 2: 2nd runner
grandia 2

cozwn, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 02:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i have all those games but not PAL :((

Lamp, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 04:34 (fifteen years ago) link

i have grandia 2 on dreamcast - it's kinda grindy, then it's a magic, weird evocation, a softly-spoken but deadly articulate curse wished on its whole genre. For like an hour, halfway through. Then it's kind of grindy again.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 22:43 (fifteen years ago) link

dude on ~another~ forum

I basically agree

a passing heavy daftie (cozen), Saturday, 20 February 2010 14:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I went on a perilous expedition to a Gamestop in the boondox of LA in the hopes of finding this game for cheap but was foiled by the store's organizational incompetence :(

looks fun as fuck though. I don't really have time for massive RPGs with weeks of playtime (sez the guy who went home and ordered a copy of Persona 4 from Amazon in semi-protest) so a 10-hr arcade-y dungeon crawler sounds like a win to me.
