colette - since you can't make it any longer*, do you have photos of short cuts you like? i'm certain that you would look lovely with a very very short cut, why not go for it?

*unless you get extensions and honestly, who does this aside from celebrities/actorz?

as for hair goop i have v short hair and i use aveda molding clay for men (it's matte and doesn't make my hair look greasy but makes it look mussed up enough to mimic several days of not-washing)

La Lechera, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

also smells lovely

La Lechera, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:08 (fifteen years ago) link

that sounds great, but aveda stuff is super expensive, though, right? what is something relatively cheap, like rite-aid/walgreen's cheap, and that is still effective in this way, but is not a bucket of lard or something?

I had a friend who used to put shaving products in his hair...

dell, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:11 (fifteen years ago) link

garnier's surf hair goop is OK at making my hair look messy, and it's often free after rebate at walgreens...

colette, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a little expensive, but if you only use like a pea-sized glop every other day, it lasts months and months. i think the stuff i bought was ~$20 and it has lasted 3 months so far with two people using it.

xp - and there is a ton left

La Lechera, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:14 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, i used to use some aveda lotion on my windburnt face that smelled amazing

funny thing is, i am not even vaguely metrosexual; i usually leave the house looking like some variety of disreputable bum, but i am fixated on certain "beauty" regimens-- like lately i refuse to bathe with any other soap except this one

ah, okay...i wish i could remember the name of the glop that i was using, b/c it was similar...it wasn't a "little dab'll do you", but more like a speck and a half. i think i could have stretched it out for a year or so, at least.

along the same lines, i'm a big fan of l'occitane soaps, for washing my face; I could probably make a bar of that last for a decade...plus it comes in those cool metal tins

dell, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

plus the l'occitane soap that i've used in the past smells like god's saliva!

dell, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:20 (fifteen years ago) link

max, i am a big fan of spray wax. it works like a pomade/paste but is less heavy. but you still get the malleability i think you are looking for. i have one from the 'beyond the zone' line at sally's that is pretty cheap (i think it is supposed to be generic bed head, which would obv. be more expensive).

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 04:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I liked Matrix's "Dirty Trix" pomade, when my hairs were short. It might be a bit $$$ tho?

Abbott, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:01 (fifteen years ago) link

And I really liked the bed head spray wax, too...now I all want to buy the Sally's version even though it would do shit for my hair at its current length.

Abbott, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i got clairol natural instincts 'shine happy' at target yesterday. will report back on dullness improvement/lack thereof.

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I bought some of those John Frieda shampoo, conditioner and anti-frizz serum for Redheads and it's made my hair VERY soft and nice, I like it. Unfortunately the need for a hair cut/colour is so great no one can tell that my hair is actually super soft and awesome :( Best part: shampoo/conditioner was $1 each at Dollarama because they are re-doing the packaging and selling old stock cheap.

Finefinemusic, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:39 (fifteen years ago) link

i can not rep enough for the sulfate-free shampoo! using giovanni atm bc devacurl is $$$$ and even though devacurl makes softer hair, i'm still sold on sulfate-free forever.

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

dollarama!

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:45 (fifteen years ago) link

tho i am happy with my aveda sap moss shampoo&cond right now
i just had to yell dollarama!!

so tired today

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I love Dollarama! I would estimate 18% of all my stuff is from there or made using things from there. It's the best place ever.

Finefinemusic, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:48 (fifteen years ago) link

DOLLARSTORE!!!!!!!!

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:51 (fifteen years ago) link

:D

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Dollarama is so much more than a dollar store, Tehresa... those outside Canada will never understand :)

Finefinemusic, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:58 (fifteen years ago) link

perhaps, but DOLLARSTORE!!! is an attempted meme that ethan and i will not let die.

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:59 (fifteen years ago) link

DOLLARSTORE!!!!

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 16:00 (fifteen years ago) link

lauren, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:56 (fifteen years ago) link

was not expecting that at all! if anything, i expected it to do nothing.

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:59 (fifteen years ago) link

oh no!
so it's not even a colour you're into, i'm guessing, right

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:00 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it just looks like pukey

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:01 (fifteen years ago) link

like, chemically lightened but not in a good way...

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

tza, john frieda has a line of glazes for different color hair types. i use the medium blonde on my light blonde hair and I can really see a diff. each time i use it. my hair color goes from flat and dry looking to shiny and multidimensional.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:10 (fifteen years ago) link

oh!

sunny successor, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:10 (fifteen years ago) link

what did you use?

sunny successor, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I just saw Barbarella for the first time ever and, while the movie is barely watchable at all, I do crave and covet her hairstyle(s). I wd like that hair all the time.

Laurel, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 20:13 (fifteen years ago) link

seriously

sunny successor, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:49 (fifteen years ago) link

your hair could totally do all that, laurel!

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link

hand sex - no, big hair - yes

sunny successor, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link

i used natural instincts 'shine happy' clear gloss.

ugh.

the frieda stuff - you have to use that like, a few times a week, right? i feel like that would cancel my sulfate-free shampoo kick.

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:52 (fifteen years ago) link

i've only seen barbarella with the sound off at mod nights but i feel like i've seen it that way about 50 times.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:56 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, every couple of days, T.

sunny successor, Thursday, 26 June 2008 02:35 (fifteen years ago) link

so my hair appt is for tues but i'm nervous cuz the guy doing it this gay japanese dude who apparently has an 'attitude' according to my friend. hairdressers with attitudes scare me, cuz they always say mean things about my hair (mostly because i wait like two years between haircuts, have uncoloured roots, flakey scalp etc.)

Rubyredd, Thursday, 26 June 2008 02:41 (fifteen years ago) link

i always feel so judged whenever i go

Rubyredd, Thursday, 26 June 2008 02:41 (fifteen years ago) link

just kiss their ass a lot and be like 'i'm sure you will do a fabulous job'

tehresa, Thursday, 26 June 2008 02:48 (fifteen years ago) link

and say things like 'i trust you.'

tehresa, Thursday, 26 June 2008 02:48 (fifteen years ago) link

i do that anyway, because i'm so scared they'll do something nasty to my hair!

Rubyredd, Thursday, 26 June 2008 02:49 (fifteen years ago) link

***warning, long rant ahead, please feel free to skip!****

i'm pretty darn tolerant of haircuts, haven't ever even been close to tears after a cut, and woke up this morning and was so pissed at the cut i got last night that i nearly cried in frustration (stress about moving has me at the edge, to be honest).

i went in, said i wanted edgy but not ugly, told her this was too long for me, that i wanted the back really short, and that i kind of liked having bangs. she said she would take the back up a ton and leave the front a little longer "for interest," and totally restructure the bangs.

well, after a full hour of her cutting, my hair looks pretty much exactly the same as when i left. except flatter, since she thinned it out. the back is a little shorter, but in 2 weeks it will be too long for me, and the front literally is exactly as long as it was when i went in. bangs are a little shorter, but no real difference.

so i'm pissed at myself for wasting 3 hours i should have used packing/cleaning and instead traveled to and from a not-great haircut, not to mention wasting $50. i don't think she's actually bad, she just didn't do what i wanted and i thought i'd asked for, at all. toby thinks i should call and try to go back to have them "fix" it, but that seems really weird to me, and i'm not able to think rationally about it.

any advice?

colette, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:15 (fifteen years ago) link

er, it looked the same as when i arrived. and when it goes behind my ears (which i do without thinking about it), it actually looks MORE mom-ish than it did before.

colette, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:16 (fifteen years ago) link

you should definitely call and ask for the cut to be fixed.

lauren, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:21 (fifteen years ago) link
