Perhaps advantageously, I was just about 20 when I got into NIN back in 1990, so logically I had already worked out the angst and could just enjoy the music, see. ;-)

Suede was a nice enough to start with, but "Head Music" was twee and boring. "Brett" seems to be a bad name for lead singers, as well.

Brent, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

um, Living Colour (I was very young).

The Smashing Pumpkins. RIP. I always thought and still think their best record was their first one: Gish. Some amazing hypnotic drumming and guitar and bass lines. Somewhere in between metal and indierock. The voice was new for me and was rather in the background and didn't harm the music too much. The only other album I liked after that was Mellon Collie. But now I really can't listen to Corgan's whining voice anymore. There is something self-important and pompous about it I can't take any longer. And the music after Gish degenerated as well. There was a song called Majonaise on Siamese Dream. That title (I don't remember the song itself) describes their music perfectly. Greasy and sticky. Stopping up my ears. I can say I truly loathe the Pumpkins now and I am happy they disbanded.

pink floyd

i certainly don't hate them (there's just too much good material there). it's just that every time i think of them i feel nauseous about how obsessive i used to be.

I still like XTRMNTR (although haven't listened in an age) but I'm now reconciled to my affection for Embrace.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 12 July 2007 09:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Don't know if I'd say I "hate" U2, but I can't remember the time I heard one of their songs come on and I didn't move immediately to turn it off.

Rage Against the Machine.

I don't see why anyone would not like XTC or Talking Heads.

lollllllllllllllz

RATM otm for me. Though I honestly haven't heard them much since my junior high infatuation with them, so I can't say it wouldn't trigger some pleasant nostalgia to hear them now. But pleasant nostalgia wouldn't stop me from cringing a little.

Oh, I'm sure there's quite a few bands/artists that I was really into in junior high/high school that I wouldn't be able to stand now -- Mariyln Manson's first few albums, MXPX, emo stuff, the really terrible studio Phish stuff (most of the live stuff too I can't stand anymore), lots and lots of bad trance -- yep, Oakenfold, Sandra Collins, et al. -- but again, I have to admit that while I'd definitely cringe, the nostalgia wouldn't make it all bad. I had some good times listening to all this garbage.

There aren't too many bands/artists that I've been into since college that I now hate, though Bright Eyes might make me wince now.

The Pixies, they are just annoying to me now.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 12 July 2007 14:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Used to quite like the Pixies. Now I can't stand them. Loud-quiet-UFO-bullshit.

latebloomer, Friday, 13 July 2007 06:10 (sixteen years ago) link

actually i don't really hate many bands i have loved. i'm pretty loyal. the old records are still there for me if their current incarnation sucks.

latebloomer, Friday, 13 July 2007 06:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Beastie Boys. I can't say as I HATE them, but I sure won't be playing any of their records anytime ever.

Sparkle Motion, Friday, 13 July 2007 06:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I would never have been able to go from something as strong as love to something as strong as hate. There are certainly bands that I like less now than I once did (Blur, Radiohead - both because they have changed musical style in ways they shouldn't have), but from love to hate, that is impossible.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 07:03 (sixteen years ago) link

And, I mean, I still love "Parklife", "The Great Escape", "The Bends" and "OK Computer".

thirteen years pass...

Hate is too strong a word but a band I once loved more than any other was Yo La Tengo. And I ask myself what happened to them about 15 years ago? They became so bad and are still getting worse. Their music turned sour. What will their next album be? A drone of a fart?

walking towards the sun since 2007 (alex in mainhattan), Friday, 17 July 2020 15:40 (three years ago) link

Boy you've really got an ax to grind against them, huh? That's, what, three threads you've dug up now to express your disdain?

I get why someone might not dig these new experimental songs, but they've "become so bad and are still getting worse" is one of the more baffling Yo La Tengo takes I've read. There's a Riot Going On is a great record.

Nine Inch Nails. And I have a very easy explanation for why: I turned 20.
― Nate Patrin

Ha, I actually didn’t start liking them until I turned 30 or so.

For me it would probably be Smashing Pumpkins. Same case as alex in manhattan, I still like Gish a lot but it’s been almost a decade or more since I listened to their other albums.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 17 July 2020 15:59 (three years ago) link

x-post
you are right, "there's a riot going on" was not too bad with some pretty good songs like "shades of blue" or "for you too". but two out of 15 is not enough for a ylt record.

Flaming Lips.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 July 2020 16:02 (three years ago) link

The Soft Bulletin was my favourite album ever for almost a full year when I was 16. May the deities-that-be ensure that I'll never hear it again.

pomenitul, Friday, 17 July 2020 16:04 (three years ago) link

Flaming Lips live were a treat though. Their over the top shows always made me smile. The music was indeed quite short-lived.

Was a fan since New Wave Hotdogs came out but i haven't listened to a note of YLT since Summer Sun came out

Couldn't see myself listening to Nick Cave, Mark Kozelek or Swans again for various reasons

I'm not sure I could bear to revisit Neutral Milk Hotel either, but I haven't tried.

pomenitul, Friday, 17 July 2020 16:17 (three years ago) link

And while I don't hate them by any stretch of the imagination, I've definitely cooled off on Grizzly Bear.

pomenitul, Friday, 17 July 2020 16:20 (three years ago) link

I'm sort of indifferent to Animal Collective now.

For the most part I feel like I've swung back around on all of the bands I ever became embarrassed about liking.

The last two I fully understand but I really enjoyed Nick Cave's third last album Push the Sky Away. Haven't listened to the last two though.

Bjork. I never want to hear that voice and those mannerisms ever again.

Björk I could never stand.

walking towards the sun since 2007 (alex in mainhattan), Friday, 17 July 2020 17:02 (three years ago) link

Blur. Can't stand anything pre self-titled or post "13," and 70% of those two albums also rub me the wrong way. It's definitely an Albarn thing.

cooldix, Friday, 17 July 2020 17:19 (three years ago) link

Ha, I actually didn’t start liking them until I turned 30 or so.

same for me, as a teenager I could not get past how bad some of the lyrics are, now that I'm an adult I really don't care much about lyrics unless you're a band like Sparks that's particularly good at writing them

frogbs, Friday, 17 July 2020 17:28 (three years ago) link

Sort of an orthogonal example, but one I think is sort of interesting--I've always loved Aesop Rock, but I can't stand to listen to his old (pre-2007 or so) material anymore. It's like listening a different, much weaker artist entirely, IMO. His delivery, flow & writing improved drastically since then. Call it a reverse Yo La Tengo, I guess (I have no strong opinions about YLT one way or the other).

american primitive stylophone (zchyrs), Friday, 17 July 2020 17:29 (three years ago) link

Ooh, yeah, Bjork, I can't really listen to her anymore, either. I don't know if I hate it, I just don't want to hear it.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 July 2020 17:32 (three years ago) link

i was a mild fan prior but couldn't bear to listen to the flaming lips after seeing them live. wayne... yikes

global tetrahedron, Friday, 17 July 2020 17:38 (three years ago) link

Modest Mouse were sort of like that for me

their stuff up to M&A still sounds okay but I never really wanna listen to it. and the show wasn't all that bad, this was after Brock got sober so it wasn't a disaster. I was just like..."already, that's enough Mouse for one lifetime" and outside of a single listen to their new album I've stuck to it
