I'm liking this.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

It's difficult to tell though, if it's genius or idiocy. The first track is great, and "Atlas" is fucking awesome, and the third track is very good, and the fourth track is good, and I can't really remember much after that. I like the weird pixie vocals. It sounds like little elves doing Kyuss covers at some points, or something. I can't tell if it's profoundly original or just Fridge with LOLs.

little elves doing Kyuss covers

Sold.

There's a UK band called Foals who I saw last night and who seem to have anticipated the direction Battles were gonna take, if a lot of the chat re: Mirrored is anything to go by. I think they're actually supporting Battles in the UK which might be a step too far, mind

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 11:41 (seventeen years ago) link

(I'm hearing Butthole Surfers doing !!! tracks)

StanM, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 11:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I've been listening to !!! and krauty Boredoms a lot lately, and this fits with that. Buttholes doing !!! I can see. The Kyuss thing is... Oompah Loompahs covering Super Scoopa & Mighty Scoop, but a bit more... physics graduate. With odd helium mantras. "Sing this hook"?

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 11:46 (seventeen years ago) link

The denatured inhuman pitchshifted vocals are initially jarring (which is a good thing) but actually make the album- and the thought that it all sounds pretty excellent on record means that (following the formula of their Eps) live it will be outstandingly good (given that undoubtedly every piece of trickery on the album is entirely replicateable live...)

gekopel, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:50 (seventeen years ago) link

they don't sound anything alike, but there's a smidgen of lightning bolt's childlike innocence/playfulness/exuberance and schoolyard chant in the mix.

unfortunately I'm gonna be out of town on the 6th. maybe I should hump up to Boston on the 5th.

Edward III, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I really enjoyed the start of this and then progressively lost interest, but that's only on a first listen. You are all on crack, the helium goblin vocals are great!

Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 15:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Mmm. On third listen tis a bit uneven, opens well, does drift off a bit with the longer tracks which sound a bit bad prog rock... however the R'n'B styled track is absolutely superb, even tho they cut it off at a mere 3 mins or so...

gekopel, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

this is my favorite album of the year so far, easily

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Do all the tracks have vocals? Because I'd like that "Atlas" song quite a lot if not for the retarded vocals.

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Most of them have some kind of vox presence, tho some are more naturalistic than "Atlas"- I wish there were even more weird vocals really...

gekopel, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:38 (seventeen years ago) link

better live than on record. Good stuff though...

tornup_andhurt, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:02 (seventeen years ago) link

uh...is there anyone who kinda doesn't like them?

the table is the table, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 02:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh no you didn't.

jim, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 02:29 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost:

I like them generaly as a band, but definitely not this single. I'm curious to hear the rest of the album though.

m the g, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 09:55 (seventeen years ago) link

i've seen them live twice, and they're pretty sick live. but their recordings always leave me wondering why they bother releasing studio albums, yet this seems to be an opinion shared by no one else.

the table is the table, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyone else want to hear an "Atlas/Rock & Roll Part 2" mash-up?

Mark Rich@rdson, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I kinda don't like them, based on Atlas and clips of the EP stuff. I'd like to like them, though.

Jordan, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 14:31 (seventeen years ago) link

rad. I saw the video last month and was amped. is this leonardoed?

you think they should record live albums? or no albums? this reminds me (not the music) of Melt-Banana... I always assumed it was a touch of fanboyism/elitism (as I don't find Cell-Scape much underwhelming at all, at least no more that to be expected minus amplification & crowd vibe) but recently got round to checking out Charlie (not their first, not their last album) and... it's correct, the studio versions really are quite significantly lesser on it compared to the way they rip them out live.

SO maybe Battles will also work it out a few more records on.

fandango, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

the single is, steve.

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 17:00 (seventeen years ago) link

That's a trememdous cover.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:19 (seventeen years ago) link

My hand looks so fat.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:21 (seventeen years ago) link

the vocals are the best thing about 'Atlas'!

blueski, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I love the vocals all through the album, pretty much. "Atlas" does seem like far and away the best track, but the entire record is good. Nice to, ahem, fornicate to.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:24 (seventeen years ago) link

for me who wrote this band off a year ago yes tut tut.

blueski, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:25 (seventeen years ago) link

that was a xpost ha ha

blueski, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:25 (seventeen years ago) link

My 3-year-old daughter thinks Atlus is lol funny. Snare Hanger fit nicely onto a mix I just finished.

professor ganson, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 12:37 (seventeen years ago) link

this is more fun than i thought it would be, but i had only heard one of the eps

artdamages, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 12:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Scik Mouthy's hand is really fucking fat.

Pye Poudre, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 13:31 (seventeen years ago) link

But my wrist is so skinny!

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 13:54 (seventeen years ago) link

take a look around, you're probably being filmed my Michel Gondry.

blueski, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 13:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Saw them at the Empty Bottle last night and they killed everything. Personally i didn't mind the vocals on Atlas on first listen, and I've grown to really enjoy them.

One of the opening bands, Voltage, was really good too, though they occasionally veered a little close to Castlevania III territory. Which isn't a bad thing at all, really.

Z S, Saturday, 31 March 2007 18:58 (seventeen years ago) link

^ Cool, Voltage and Battles, nice combination. I rather like Voltage's Building the Bass Castle.

professor ganson, Saturday, 31 March 2007 21:53 (seventeen years ago) link

this is very very good. i just played "atlas" on my radio show and it sounds wonderful on these nice headphones. i am really kicking myself for not seeing them live when i had the chance. can't wait for this album.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:38 (seventeen years ago) link

It's getting tons of hype considering it won't be out for a month and a half. I like Atlas and all, but if it's really the best thing on the album then hmmm...

Jordan, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:59 (seventeen years ago) link

not feeling Atlas.
unfortunate, since i thought the EPs were pretty awesome.

gypsysphinx, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 21:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I like Atlas and all, but if it's really the best thing on the album then hmmm...

I like Tij more than Atlas, but then there's nothing nearly as good as those two. Would've liked this more as another EP.

xox, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 21:41 (seventeen years ago) link

So I decided I didn't want to wait for the release old school, and just listened to the opening track Race In and what a fucking killer. And I mean that in the most unkilling way.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 22:09 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't know what you mean but race:in is so fucking elegant, sounds like tortoise on uppers

cutty, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 22:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, that is probably what I mean. I didn't expect for such a mellow and cool opening but I think it sounds great.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 22:18 (seventeen years ago) link

this is my favorite album of the year so far, easily

cp misspelled the drummers name "stainer" 3 times in one review! did a factchecker quit lol?

am0n, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 04:29 (seventeen years ago) link

this is what happens when your factchecking department is lazy college students

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:03 (seventeen years ago) link

which still somehow puts us ahead of village voice media

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:03 (seventeen years ago) link

am0n, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:14 (seventeen years ago) link

the public eating of beans (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 8 August 2019 15:04 (four years ago) link

I guess one upside of being a duo is that there's a lot of room for the drums to sound huge
