SUBLIME=GAY

"they are the most talented band ever" = surely true, whenever anyone uses this phrase ever

julio is korrekt, it is brothers not parents (generation gap = marketing scam)

mark s, Sunday, 28 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

''i thought that was parents. i thought your older brother was supposed to shake down all the cool stuff like Sublime and No Doubt.''

my parents don't really have much of an interest in music (which is OK).

My brother thinks i'm 'mad' (especially after he heard a bit of 'For Alto') so he won't listen to me!

''julio is korrekt, it is brothers not parents (generation gap = marketing scam)''

'ere we go, mark is using 'marketing' as a stick to beat me with yawn...

Julio Desouza, Sunday, 28 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

who needs peers or siblings or parents to tell you what is good when you can just go here? My friends knows all the good sounds and he counts real good too.

Jack Cole, Sunday, 28 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I actually started this thread 7 months ago. As far as my brother goes, half of the stuff he listens too is Sublime/311/Phish crap. but he also likes Jay-z and DMX so I can talk too him about that. My parents like Bob Dylan and The Allman Brothers so I'm cut off from them.

ejad, Sunday, 28 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

this is fucking music people. in my mind and my opinion sublime will always be a classic and ive heard alot of music. you cant give a definitive for sure answer for everything when music is concerned. you just listen to it. you like it or you dont like it. io respect everyones opinion that says sublime isnt a classic. but all the arguing in the world wont change my minf on this one cause i've liked almost everything sublime hads ever done and i cant say that about any other band. i guess we can agree to disagree on this one. cheers

dubz, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

what it all boils down is that this is just f-ing music people. in my mind and my opinion sublime will always be a classic and ive heard alot of music. you cant give a definitive for sure answer for everything when music is concerned. you just listen to it. you like it or you dont like it. io respect everyones opinion that says sublime isnt a classic. but all the arguing in the world wont change my minf on this one cause i've liked almost everything sublime hads ever done and i cant say that about any other band. i guess we can agree to disagree on this one. cheers

oh yeah and im not going to mention any name but ive seen some of you lame over the hill sobs on here arguing over electronic music. ive also seen some of you all hyped over the last "brandy" song or re used beat by some lame ass r n b artist. electronic music has no heart and no soul although yeah its good for a certain time of place. im not a hater like most of you are so i wont bash what you listen to.

dubz, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

damn non-updating cache.

Call me doubtful on this point.

Great thread. Can one of the old-timers post an "Attack of the Googlers" best-of comp? I need more of this comedy and it's not too easy to search for.

(oh and btw, DUD)

i'll still rep for sublime especially the 4 track recorded "Robbin the Hood" which honestly is some of the best homemade dub ive ever heard in my life. his voice still makes me wish i could sing like that. the boy had soul.

charleston charge (chaki), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:09 (nineteen years ago) link

i used to love robbin the hood - havent heard that or anything else in years, but listening to my brand new copy of Early yesterday i realized that though they have diametrically opposed sensibilities there are some kind of parallels between how i liked Sublime and that era of Scritti Politti that i am now very fond of. right now I'd still have to say Sublime is a dud for the assy lyrics and fanbase.

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:48 (nineteen years ago) link

yah but you cant call band dud because of bad lyrics (new order) and fanbase (new order)

charleston charge (chaki), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

"badfish" is a great song.

reo, Monday, 14 March 2005 23:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I think this band (esp. their early work) is due for a HUGE critical reevaluation.

essentially: chaki OTM

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:42 (nineteen years ago) link

There are some tunes on the self-titled album that are fucking great. There are some monster duds on it as well, but mostly I think this band was very good.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:45 (nineteen years ago) link

And the guy could sing, yeah. "Jail House" and "Garden Grove" are two great vocal performances.

I like "Santeria."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:54 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure why, but I don't put them at the same level as all the other shitty fat white guy bands. somehow they seemed above it, but then again, I've heard about 3 Sublime songs.

his face was burned off in a flaming crossbow accident (King Kobra), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:55 (nineteen years ago) link

My solution for Orange County: Tactical Nukes. Sublime sucked and gave a generation of hippies and jocks the soundtrack to their lives and my headache when I was trapped in a car with them.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 00:56 (nineteen years ago) link

....not dud. not Classic, but not dud.

I haven't read the whole thread here, but from the looks of things most of the people that hate are hating the fans, not the band.

CLASSIC THEY ARE SO TALENTED AND GOOD!!!!!

billstevejim, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:09 (nineteen years ago) link

For real though, they're almost classic. Their self-titled is overrated as hell, but I love about 75% of 40 oz to freedom.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Or I guess you could say I love 30 of the 40 ounces.

of the few sublime threads i've ever read, it always gets down to 'god, i hate their cult!' it's been a decade now and apparently the painful context in which this group was heard STILL can't be escaped.

Carlos Keith (Buck_Wilde), Thursday, 11 May 2006 19:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Based on the examples of the cult who posted on the thread, I have to say I'm not THAT surprised.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 May 2006 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

(By which I mean Them Googlers rather than Good People like Chaki, Gear, etc., who can actually write.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 May 2006 19:45 (seventeen years ago) link

well this is an old thread and i stumbled on it while googling but i just wanted to say something.

i was born in 1970 in long beach california and actually was very tight friends growing up with the drummer of sublime, a guy by the name of bud gaugh. i knew of sublime from its inception in 1986 and i watched them rehearse, play shitty punker parties and clubs, and eventually sell out theatres and shit all over california. they were all really nice, down to earth guys and fun to be around. i read something up there about the lead singer having a monster ego, which is untrue, bradley was one of the humblest dudes i ever met. as for musical influence or whatever i'm just a punk from southern california, i can't help you there, but they kicked some mean shit back in the day and they were really, truly a great band and great guys (and rad as hell when it came to surfing)..

just wanted to say something since i actually knew all these guys way back in the mist.

MC, Tuesday, 16 May 2006 22:27 (seventeen years ago) link

they were kinda too fat to surf

city of gyros (chaki), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 22:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I often think that Thanx would make a good poll, but every time I start to divide it up, it ends up looking like it would have to be 4 or 5 separate polls or something and I give up.

One thing that I learned from reading the lyrics though, is that there were sections that were largely dedicated to rap and reggae artists at the end that were cut from the CD versions. I had an old Skunk Records copy of the 40oz to Freedom cassette though and don't remember those verses being on there.

Alright, before we get it started:
When we did, "Smoke Two Joints", that was jacked from the Toyes
And that song, "Rivers of Babylon" was written by B. Dowe and F. McNaughton

Alright now, crucial thanks out to the Happoldt, Nowell, and Wilson families for their patience and support. We love y'all! To all the players who made this possible: thank you very much! (Yeah, the check's in the mail.) To Kelly Vargas for steppin' in there and makin' it happen. To LBP, the world famous Juice Bros, the Field-Marshall Goodman and the man called Floyd-I. Thanks a million. I gotta say what's up and thank you to Dave Shea and Greg A. Without them, this wouldn't be possible. (Oh yeah, your mom called and said you guys should take a nap!) To Sacramento; BMD; and Danny Lovitz out in Arcata. I gotta say thank you to Diet Fade; Imagining Yellow Suns; every one out at Ben is Dead; Kevin Swinson; Frija; Cold Duke Train; and Wister; and how could I not thank Mark Mandoo, and the One Live Crew; and all the Lakewood posse?
