I'm sure she was just really dehydrated.

Endless free glasses of Cointreau'll do that. I can see this happening on Continental. But VIRGIN?? Christ even the punters get treated like fucking stars on their international flights. Oh this is predictable isn't it. Anyhow, she's a rock star, of course she's going to get testy in an enclosed unsmoky environment.

Ye gods! What did Kurt *see* in this woman? Did he just have bad taste or was more mentally ill that we previously thought?

Yeah, because, you know

I mean, mans must have been beating them off with a shitty stick.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 03:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

courtney threads are always handy czx they keep the fuckwit misogynists busy

erm, I hate Courtney (okay, "hate" in the sense that you might say you "love pizza" to paraphrase Daniel Clowes in "Why I Hate Christians"; I certainly don't want her to die or anything, and if I ever actually met her I'd probably be nice to her, so maybe I should stop contributing to these threads because I can see I'm being classed with the people who REALLY hate her, yeah yeah I'd better end this bit now) because she punched Kathleen Hanna, who I have a totally mad pash for. what does this make me?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I expect I wz secretly hoping to be swept aside by a veritable rush of well-respected male feminists cramming a cap on their head to prove that it sure didn't fit them nossir noway

now I know! (tho "well-respected" is questionable)

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

s: my logic in posting the chaki bit wuz that for a woman who PLAYS on sex so consciously, it seems the nicest thing you can do is simply admit attraction and thus grant the hold over you she desires.

i think that part of the courtney-hate is, along with the typical double-standard virgin/whore etc. stuff the fear of a woman who attempts to assert her sexuality in a power relationship.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 06:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can't it just be because, just maybe, she's really obnoxious?

Clarke B., Wednesday, 5 February 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

no because male rock stars can be twice as obnoxious as her and they get applauded for it. (I'm not saying that's you, Clarke B.) When Yngwie unleashed the fucking fury the hatas were like "wow that's the best thing he's ever recorded" - when Courtney does it the hatas just hate

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 07:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

dude if you went to the metal sludge board people were like "yngwie is a fucking asshole dipshit cockmangler" and if you go to the hole board right now people are like "yay courtney is awesome"

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 07:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think that part of the courtney-hate is, along with the typical double-standard virgin/whore etc. stuff the fear of a woman who attempts to assert her sexuality in a power relationship.

i hardly think that applies to me. i even like obnoxious women. i wish more women would fart in public and shit like that. i just don't like courtney. she doesn't seem like the kind of person i can trust. it comes down to that.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 09:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Di's right. I wish people would stop saying a double standard is being applied to CL. Not with me it isn't. CL has a very well-deserved reputation as a liar and a thief in many of the cities she lived in in the '80s.

"What did Kurt see in Courtney?" makes no sense -- he was no prize! Damaged and unhappy people have a way of finding each other, end of story.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 13:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

You certainly don't have to be a misogynist to hate this uniquely untalented and abrasive woman. It doesn't even "help to be one"; I don't even think of her as a woman.

matt riedl (veal), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Eesh. Y'all must hang out with Courtney a lot more than me. Her being obnoxious just doesn't have much impact on my social life. Live Through This was a great record when it came out, and, gee, it still is. But hey, I even like "Boys on the Radio" (if Billy Corgan really wrote that whole album, how come it's better than any of his?).

Jesse Fox, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

...to hate this uniquely untalented and abrasive woman...
I actually don't hate her, I don't even think she lacks talent. But I do understand WHY someone WOULD hate her. You have to admit this though: Yoko Ono's singing never got any better. Courtney Love started out with formless horrid shrieking (Pretty on the Inside), went to cringingly bad howling (Live Through This) to merely off-key snarling (Celebrity Skin); I wouldn't say her voice/singing is great, but she has improved. At this rate, she'll sound like Sarah MacLachlan in roughly 2 more albums.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, I think Yoko Ono wipes the floor with Courtney Love, hands down. Courtney will never make an album as adventurous and rewarding as "Fly". Nor will she ever make any surprisingly awkward disco/Japanese-shrieking songs. Yoko wins just on the strength of having actual ideas...

The funny thing about the courtney-hate is nobody really seems to be able to back it up with any discussion of her music at all.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

thats because you can't hate someone just cos you don't like their music. actually, i don't mind hole.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

well, with Courtney I'm sure she'd be the first to admit that very little of her "public persona" has anything to do with music. She's put out what, 3 albums in 15 years or something?

But just for the record, I (rather embarassingly) must hew to the traditional indie-judgment that her first album is really the only one worth listening to. The abrasive shrieking and sloppiness and anger at least packs some visceral punch - "Good Sister/Bad Sister" being the best track on the album. "Live Through This" - eh, "Doll Parts" is okay, but mostly it sounds like sub-par Nirvana. The song-structures, the lyrics, the delivery, everything matches up to the oft-repeated rumors of Kurt-authorship. And released the day after his suicide - ewww, the creepiness factor of the record is very high, it's like she raped his corpse in public or something. I only heard the singles off "Celebrity Skin" and I thought they were appallingly bad... am I forgetting anything? That's about all I've heard. Her music wouldn't be quite so loathsome if it wasn't so hopelessly chained to her shameless, exploitative, completely stupid antics.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 February 2003 00:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

There's a piece of graffiti in the library toilets around here about women only being good for blow jobs. Underneath it, someone wrote "fuck off you misogynistic cunt". It works on so many levels.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 6 February 2003 01:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

hah, re: the previous.

well.. Hole's lyrics don't sound at all like Nirvana's. I really fail to see the similarities. But you're going to hear what you wanna hear if yr convinced Cobain wrote the songs. And.. um.. raped his corpse in public? Come on. An album was released. Cobain shot himself. I am so sick & disgusted of the word "rape" casually being tossed around thanks to Cobain's use of it to complain about the music industry or whatever. If you have a problem w/Nirvana's legacy than complain about that, but don't be ridiculous.

daria g, Thursday, 6 February 2003 01:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Discuss her music? Her music is hideous and doesn't really invite discussion. She just needed to put her picture on SOMEthing.

matt riedl (veal), Thursday, 6 February 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

what i don't understand are you people who keep denying you're being mysogynistic in your opinions about courtney.

like you would give a shit if some male musician was "trustworthy" or not. and if iggy pop ran around london naked you'd think it was awesome. THERE IS A DOUBLE STANDARD AND THAT'S THAT.

phuket, Thursday, 6 February 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

"like you would give a shit if some male musician was "trustworthy" or not. and if iggy pop ran around london naked you'd think it was awesome. THERE IS A DOUBLE STANDARD AND THAT'S THAT. "

What do you know about me and my standards? "Trustworthy" - who said that?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 February 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

di smith and suzy.

i just wish people (male AND female) would admit that they judge her conduct more harshly cause she's a woman.

phuket, Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

whatever - that's a completely baseless assertion. Dave Q wants Howard Jones killed, is it because *gasp* Howard Jones is a MAN?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 February 2003 22:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Regardless of gender, she's an attention-starved, undertalented embarassment and a flagrant starfucker.

"Ye gods! What did Kurt *see* in this woman?"

Courtney = foxy

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 February 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

that's so sexist Killian. Obviously, Kurt must have been attracted to her rapier-like wit, her dazzling musicianship, and her impeccable good taste.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 February 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know Courtney can be an attention-seeking irritant sometimes, but she's hardly the devil incarnate. Sure, she wasn't as talented a songwriter as Kurt, but he was pretty self-absorbed and selfish himself, to be 100% honest about it. I don't think Courtney-hating is down to misogyny, but I think because people prefer Kurt's music, they try and make out that it was Bad Old Courtney who corrupted innocent St.Kurt. It's not so much to do with her gender, more to do with the gap in talent between her and her husband.

I agree, she's a bit of a fool sometimes.But I wouldn't HATE someone, because they're loud and annoying.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 February 2003 23:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Or maybe her sense of humor?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 6 February 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

All this Courtney-bashing is a pathetic attempt to avoid the most important point of all: SHE HAS TERIFFIC BREASTS!

See this month's Q for further evidence...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 February 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

I hate her the way I hate Stan Lee. Everything either of them has done has been on the backs of other much more talented and interesting people. It's all about status, money, and power. It's people like that that make the world almost unbearable to live in.

Hmmm. Does Drudge have past "beef" with Courtney?
