Didn't Christine Elise have a reoccurring role on ER? Didn't she sleep with George Cooney after giving a little kid a spinal tap?

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

She gave Clooney's spine a tap.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

The amazing thing about 90210 was that even at 13 years old, I knew it was seriously lame and seriously great at the same time.

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Jason P’s descent into alcoholism and exit from the show (what happened there plotwise? I had stopped watching by the time this went down – once they got to college and Brenda left it got boring boring boring)

Brandon got a journalist job in NYC after much Kelly angst.

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 8 June 2006 22:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I love how in the later non-Walsh episodes the Steve/Janet storylines (usually some sort of Beverly Beat hi-jinks) never intersect with the other characters. It's like two different TV shows are overlapped.

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 8 June 2006 22:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh Stevepaws.

Bluebell Madonna (Ex Leon), Thursday, 8 June 2006 22:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Dylan in his whispering-don't-mess-with-me-voice saying:
"Go ahead... touch it..."

... to some guy hasseling Scott (cowboy-hat-suicide-guy), probably was BH90210's finest moment. This sentence at least flames on, not only in my world.
And Super Cub OTM. You *knew* this show was wrong, but *knew* it was grebt at the same time.

Gerard (Gerard), Thursday, 8 June 2006 23:48 (seventeen years ago) link

It is the best of shows, it is the worst of shows. I regret my cable provider not having soapnet, it would be nice to catch a rerun every once in awhile.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 9 June 2006 10:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Have we talked about the episode where Brandon gets pulled over for drunk driving? Or the one where he sleeps with a professor's wife?

It scares me that I could literally go on about this show all day

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 9 June 2006 10:50 (seventeen years ago) link

What, no Melrose Place chatter? Come on, Heather Locklear and POOL BOY!!!

I mean, FFS, I was well old enough to know better but still remember getting into fake spats about whether Dylan or Brandon was hotter.

My former housemate in NYC was also hooked - but, as she pointed out "It's only really good when someone has a really awful addiction" which was, like, every other week.

What happenned with Kelly's mum and David's dad? And whose mum was having the affair, was that Donna?

I Only Pretended To Be American (kate), Friday, 9 June 2006 10:54 (seventeen years ago) link

ooh remember when someone had a really awful addiction (over by the end of the episode... or maybe it was a rare all-out two episode spree!) and didn't notice that they'd pushed Donna into the pool and she'd hit her head and got knocked out?

I was pissed off when Dyl first started up with Kel but then I came to have a sick enjoyment of her worrying little rodenty fussing.

East Side Story (edit)
Community Score
7.4 Good
First aired: 2/14/1991 Production Code: 2190014

The Walshes agree to let their maid's extremely intelligent "niece," Carla, use their address to enroll at West Beverly. Brandon falls hard for her, but doesn't understand why everyone seems opposed to their relationship. Carla reveals that she witnessed a drive-by shooting that claimed the life of a four-year-old; she had moved in with Anna while waiting to testify, with protection from the D.A. Carla returns to her family after one of the killers confesses. Jim and Cindy organize a soiree for his new client, a sportswear designer. Dylan, Steve and the girls receive free clothing. David wants MC Hammer to perform at the school dance.
Music: "Let's Go Deeper" by MC Hammer; "Finger Poppin' Time" by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters (#7, 1960); "Deep Down" by Debbie Gibson

Community Score
7.5 Good
First aired: 3/7/1991 Production Code: 2190016

Andrea persuades Brandon to run for class president. Kelly seizes control of the campaign and encourages Brandon to capitalize on his looks and image. She even agrees to a date with David in exchange for his help producing a campaign video. Brandon decides that he isn't the best man for the job after talking with his bright and dedicated opponent. Brenda, feeling neglected by family and friends, begins hanging out at a coffeehouse. Sky, a performance artist, convinces Brenda to drop out of high school and get her GED so that she can "experience life." Brenda moves out of the Walsh house to apartment-sit for Sky. She learns that life as an artist is not as romantic as it seems, as Sky's utilities are turned off and her furniture is repossessed. Music: "Hippychick" by Soho

man they actually played heaps of good music on this series at first!

spectra (spectra), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

I totally saw that second one! all I really remember about it is Brenda wearing a loose, flowy dress and one of those Blossom hats to school and Kelly seeing her at her locker and saying, "the hippy witch look is totally out" or something to that effect. Kelly and Brenda weren't friends that week for some reason.

Have we talked about the episode where Brandon gets pulled over for drunk driving? Or the one where he sleeps with a professor's wife?

I think you just did. If memory serves, the professor's wife was played by Dina Meyer.

What other strange bands played at the Peach Pit? I can only remember the Flaming Lips, The Corrs, and Color Me Badd.

90210's answer to the Quincy punk rock episode...

37. U4EA (edit)
Community Score
8.2 Great
First aired: 11/14/1991 Production Code: 2191036

Emily invites everyone to join her at an underground club. The location is a secret; the gang must exchange an egg at a convenience store for this information. The others leave without Steve and Andrea, who end up going to the wrong store and embarrassing themselves. Kelly is mortified when David drinks an entire bottle of whiskey, but Donna dances with him and has a good time. Emily slips a drug called U4EA into Brandon's drink to get him to loosen up. He is too wasted to drive, and vandals trash his car when he leaves it at the club overnight. Brandon does not expose Emily's deed to his parents, but breaks up with her because he no longer trusts her. Music: "Hold on to Love" by T'Pau

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I vividly remember Brandon and Emily making out like thieves on the car hood.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I could have SWORN that they were dancing to Tones on Tail in the U4EA episode. Do I just hallucinate that? Could have sworn it was "Go!"

my favorite episode was always the one where they had the fake-ecstacy type drug called "Euphoria" and found these eggs with directions to a "rave"! brandon was dancing on top of a car...man...I loved 90210 so much...

remember the debut of Powerman 5000 when David was a video direction and Donna was a dancer in the sexxxy video...david got all jealous....

also, i'm pretty sure the goo goo dolls performed on it too, on a cruise ship steve had rented for this b-day? (maybe a ship)....anyway, I remember the Goo Goo Dolls performing between two GIANT cardboard cutouts of Steve...so bizarre...

What happenned with Kelly's mum and David's dad? And whose mum was having the affair, was that Donna?

Yeah, it was Donna's mom. David's dad couldn't keep his pants zipped up (choice line, "I have trouble/problems with monogamy") which led to their breakup a couple of years after baby Erin was born.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 10 June 2006 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah that was the goo goo dolls on steve party cruise. i remember a hipster friend going on and on about the flaming lips and then never mentioning them again after they played on 90210. suck it hipster doofus!

things i remember:

wondering why these rich kids all had such boring middle class suburban surnames

wondering how they could do a whole episode based around brenda smoking but dylan was high on smack and driving off cliffs in a vintage porsche every other minute.

the college years episode where donna finds out andrea is pregnant and andrea says 'look donna, it was fun being virgins together but im not like that anymore'. so much fun!

hating that stupid hand-fist smacky smack thing the guys did when they greeted each other because i just knew they were doing that off camera too.

davids hammer pants

Aw, the fist smacky thing was great. AMP just forwarded me the greatest site with reviews and everything, but I am too tipsy to get two windows open at the same time and find it.

Running "donna martin graduates" through google turns up some choice stuff. Two favorites -- first, from a buried blog comment somewhere:

The best part of the “Donna Martin Graduates” story line actually took place the next year when Brandon was sought out and recruited by the California University Progressive Party to run for the Student Senate because they were so impressed that he organized the “Donna Martin Graduates” protest.

Second, good ol' X-Entertainment with The Wacky Dads of 90210.

Then there's the actual Donna Martin Graduates blog, with "Stories from the front lines of inner-city elementary school education, as told by a bad teacher at a good school in an above-average district." It has not been updated for a year and a half.

Gabrielle Carteris went to my college. I think that she was there to witness the famous Holly Robinson/Robin Givens catfight (all of which happened before I went there).

Also, 90210 full of gratuitous references to Minneapolis, like shopping at Dayton's.

I was hurt by the ease with which Steve replaced Dylan as Brandon's best friend sometime in season three.

I mean, the first thing Dylan showed Brandon upon meeting him was a book of Byron's poetry, hidden in his Porsche. What did Steve read?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 11 June 2006 12:26 (seventeen years ago) link

to be fair, he did meet Steve first. Dylan was clearly an interloper and Steve was just the patient kind, waiting, y'know?

Doctor Barry, i forgot to tell you last night that i now curse your name for ever reminding me of Joe E. Tata. i finally had peace, now that the show has been off the air so long, because (i have NO idea why but) his name and his oddly limited acting career sticks in my mind even more than Ornaldo Bloomps.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 11 June 2006 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

oh and the weirdest Nat/Peach Pit thing that bugs me - the entire character is almost exactly copied from the FAME tv series where the hangout was called instead called "Lou's Lanes" and the owner (called "Lou" obv.) was played by Dick Mackie. They look remarkably alike and even had the same outfit right down to the name patch.

Dick as "Lou"

Doctor Barry, i forgot to tell you last night that i now curse your name for ever reminding me of Joe E. Tata.

A GIS for Joe E. Tata turns up extremely limited results! Come on Kim, you should be thanking me here. Can you name another character on a long-running hit TV show that was as lovingly useless as Nat? We should be celebrating his name.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 11 June 2006 19:06 (seventeen years ago) link

no, I don't think you understand. i will now wake up at 3am or be buying groceries or drying my hair and his name and his uselessness will just be there gnawing at my brain. Joe E. Tata, Joe E. Tata, Joe E. Tata... and that Nat/Lou thing... was it on purpose? was IT? omg. i must know!

it's my own fault though. i should have known better than to click on this thread - but i had truly forgotten.

-- Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (soto.alfre...) (webmail), Today 8:26 AM. (Alfred Soto) (later)

but steve didnt need to read anything. he was filthy rich and thrilled to be filthy rich. the rest spent their time trying to slum it, making them not only lame and boring, but also perfect victims for brandons self-righteous tirades.

Free Your Ass (And Your Mind Will Follow) (kate), Monday, 12 June 2006 08:45 (seventeen years ago) link

they went crazy with the merchandising for this. I actually have one of the Brandon barbies stored away somewhere.

I actually watched some clips of some cast reunion show and Priestly said a cogent thing, when they were talking about THE HAIR, he was like "well it was the '80s!" and the others said "it was the '90s!" and he said "okay..it was the early '90s... but it was the '80s!" ... BH90210 really melded that '80s stuff with the '90s in such a weird way.

remember when brenda went to the University of MN for a couple episodes? They interpersed this wierd stock video footage of campus in between scenes...it was totes hilarious...everyone dressed in penny loafters and collar shirts (her girl roommates) and they were all like "well i guess you guys dress like that in california, but we're a little more conservative here"...which is awesome if you were actually at the U of M in the early/mid 90s cuz it's like "where's the gutter punx and the vegan protests"....

Bluebell Madonna (Ex Leon), Monday, 12 June 2006 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

now she is the lifetime network.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 12 June 2006 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I was too young to watch this at the time, but have been dipping in when I feel like some '90s cheese--so I tend to go straight to the "very special" episodes such as "Ashes to Ashes", where a Black family moves in next door and face hassles with the neighborhood private security. ("A scheduled April repeat of this episode was pulled from the air without notice following the Los Angeles riots because it was supposedly too controversial" sez Wikipedia.)

Having served their afterschool special role, this family is never seen again on the show.

A kind soul on the internet has done editing work to restore the original music back into the episodes and uploaded them onto Google Drive. If the email linked to my ILX account still existed I'd be happy to share the link, but alas.
