Try layering, maybe? Like, for my face I use a mixture of oils while in the shower, then I slap on a good moisturizer after that. You could also try a thin layer of aquaphor over the oil, to seal it.

just1n3, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:37 (ten years ago) link

African Black soap working well so far. Also got some fancy pants moisturizer that supposed to be really good so I'm pretty excited to start using that. Using Retin-A pretty regularly still and that's going well too. For body I'm alternating between coconut oil and AmLactin and that's been working brilliantly.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:17 (ten years ago) link

I'm trying to use what I have because I owe so much money and don't really have prospects for getting a lot more, but I'm going to have to deal with buying some $30 moisturizer and skipping lunch a few more days because fucking A.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:42 (ten years ago) link

do not skip lunch, just moisturize more than 1x a day?

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:48 (ten years ago) link

It's more like the lotion is just not working. It gets on the surface but my skin still feels tight and peels? First turns hard and scaly and then peels like it's been burned. Around which, of course, it breaks out in oily whiteheads. Think I'm reacting badly to everything I try. Back to expensive brand counter that at least doesn't HURT me.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:57 (ten years ago) link

Been using body lotion and odds and ends of free samples on my face all winter w p good results but ran out of the Creme por le Corps (lol my French) from Kiehls and no other lotion is safe. Even this Aveda one is peeling me like an onion.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:06 (ten years ago) link

are you sure it's not the cleanser/soap?

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:10 (ten years ago) link

I've changed that up a few times, too. Same. Just really tired of "getting ready" routine having to include removing/covering up my peeling and redness for 10 minutes first.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:17 (ten years ago) link

Sorry to unload itt, it's been going on for a couple of months at different levels. Maybe I'm not eating of something? My hands split even though I moisturize them 6x a day, my arms and legs are rough...my skin hates me.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:19 (ten years ago) link

*eating enough

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:19 (ten years ago) link

are you drinking enough plain old water?

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:21 (ten years ago) link

sorry that is an annoying question but i can tell usually within a day when i am not properly hydrated from within. it's like i can feel my brain shriveling up.

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:22 (ten years ago) link

xxpost not like I'm any kind of authority but it sounds like a reaction to something yr using, or something in yr diet

stress could be part of it too imo

i would stop cleansing/moisturizing altogether with what you are using & (if you can) switch to something suuuuper mild. cetaphil or cerave. don't go to the expensive counter til you know for sure what's causing this imo, or it'll be a waste of precious moola

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:34 (ten years ago) link

yeah, also my hair/skin/nails get really brittle when i'm stressed or not eating enough!

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:50 (ten years ago) link

in orbit...would you mind posting a pic of this peeling? Or send one to me?

kate78, Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:46 (ten years ago) link

Thanks for caring, you two! I'll try Cetaphil/Cerave again and see if it works better this time; as veg says, if it doesn't work, at least it's cheap.

xp oh I forget we have a specialist! I haven't washed my face yet today so it's not bad yet but I can take one later and send to you?

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:49 (ten years ago) link

kate to the rescue!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:50 (ten years ago) link

I think the face scaliness was from using this sunscreen that someone at Sephora recommended. I said I could only tolerate physical blocks and not chemical ones, and she said it was a physical agent, but I still reacted.

Their Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve face cream was an okay moisturizer but I had to apply a lot to relieve my dryness.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:55 (ten years ago) link

that all sounds pretty bad, io - like, more than just basic-level dryness. not to freak you out or anything, just saying that it sounds like an asshole to deal with. sympathies :/

just1n3, Thursday, 20 March 2014 19:55 (ten years ago) link

hope you can get it under control inexpensively

extreme skin discomfort is a huge bummer, can really fuck with you mentally (or at least it did with me)

hang in there!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:05 (ten years ago) link

I mean apart from being named "Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve," which, come the f on!

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:21 (ten years ago) link

lol @ fresh lotus youth preserve
decent band name though?

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:22 (ten years ago) link

Totes.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:28 (ten years ago) link

Which clothing line was it that had the hipster model with the giant lotus throat tattoo?

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:28 (ten years ago) link

asos!

kinder, Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:42 (ten years ago) link

but also Morrissey and Robert Smith and the Queen

kinder, Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:43 (ten years ago) link

(as tatts, not who also have giant lotus throat tattoos... although maybe Liz keeps hers covered up)

kinder, Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:44 (ten years ago) link

hey, in orbit, yeah, send we whatever you got, what worries you the most, etc, and I'll pass it around the office.

kate78, Thursday, 20 March 2014 21:07 (ten years ago) link

I've never used anything by Fresh other than then sugar lip balm which I think is overrated. Also, if I'd been allowed to get tattooed last year at 16 I totally would have gotten Morrissey and Robert Smith tattoos but prob not the queen or a lotus or anything on my neck.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 20 March 2014 22:09 (ten years ago) link

Man IO that sounds like a real pain in the ass/face. Makes me feel a little more accepting of my skin; it's a hell of a long ways from "flawless," but at least it doesn't *hurt*! Thanking u mottled bumpy skin for being only cosmetically and not physically annoying.

quincie, Friday, 21 March 2014 01:12 (ten years ago) link

Thanks, everyone! I've been using Mario Badescu for 3-4 years and forgot I was so goddamn sensitive.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 21 March 2014 01:17 (ten years ago) link

kate, you are a dear. I've thrown out the offending sunscreen moisturizer and I just sanded myself with cornmeal and honey and feel 100x better, but if the condition persists I will gratefully accept your offer.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 21 March 2014 02:26 (ten years ago) link

I am a bit ocd about the skin around my eyes, as I have mentioned before. I have been experimenting with diff eyecreams for some time now, but haven't really found anything good. I liked the clinique all about eyes but I've been hoping I could find something better. Tried some inexpensive options, no real joy. Anyway, got a sample of a Kiehl's eyecream a while back (long name, something something super duper avocado blah blah). I used it while I was travelling, and I was kinda shocked at what a difference it made. It was a little greasy, but the skin under my eyes smoothed out, and it helped to firm up the skin above my eyelids which is kinda droopy. I used it up in a week though, and went back to my cheapo one when I got home. I was trying to convince myself I didn't need to get it, because $$$, but this whole time I've been thinking, man that eyecream was ~the business~

So I finally bought a proper container of it today (I mean, if this shit holds up, then technically I'm saving money, since I've been buying $10 tubes and not finishing them so I can totally justify this in my head lol)...it's so sad how product purchase = happiness but ugh you guys I'm so happy to have this properly in my routine now

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 22 March 2014 01:41 (ten years ago) link

oh and the guy who sold it to me had this SUPER-affected way of talking it sounded like he was saying 'UH CREM' (why bcz beauty salon, it's like a hiring policy at this place that you have to have a weird way of talking along with 1) crazy fake tan 2) bored/snotty attitude and 3) ridiculous name )

I repeated it to myself all the way home in the car, it made me lol so much

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 22 March 2014 01:44 (ten years ago) link

I went shopping for eye cream last week! I read reviews and went to try out a bunch but they all mostly feel the same. Tbh I just need something to leave on overnight for moisturising and goodness. Went with Estee Lauder night repair which seems ok. I looked at the kiehl's one and it felt lovely!

kinder, Saturday, 22 March 2014 09:52 (ten years ago) link

I've been really pleased with Eminence Organics Herbal Contour crime, I think it's called. Very moisturizing. Might try the Keihl's next, though.

carl agatha, Saturday, 22 March 2014 12:13 (ten years ago) link

LOL cream! Crime! Hahahaha good one, iPad.

carl agatha, Saturday, 22 March 2014 12:13 (ten years ago) link

Which Kheil's VG?

I just re-bought my Shiseido one but I went with the dark circle one (cause that's my main thing) and not the wrinkle one and I don't know if I like it as much. We'll see.

I'm sure there are plenty of great drugstore brand skincare stuff but I do think that some things are worth splurging on for sure.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Saturday, 22 March 2014 13:09 (ten years ago) link

It's Super Creamy Avocado Eye Treatment? I think

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 22 March 2014 16:19 (ten years ago) link

lol 'crime', it's true

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 22 March 2014 16:20 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I've heard good things about that!

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Saturday, 22 March 2014 16:58 (ten years ago) link

It is officially insane how much that avocado eye cream costs.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 02:49 (ten years ago) link

I mean, I want it but I couldn't justify once I was in the store holding the tiny container. Then I went to Aveda and they have this "anti-stress" body butter/moisturizer, maybe like 200ml and it's $60 - I actually asked why and the salesperson was like "it's organic and specially blended, etc". I'm seriously not cheap about cosmetics in the first place but I'm just going to go get some Shea butter and coconut oil and make my own (anti-stretch-marks) body butter.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 02:55 (ten years ago) link

I did buy the Aveda tinted moisturizer SPF 15 (titanium dioxide only) though.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 02:56 (ten years ago) link

price per ounce of skincare/cosmetics is some astronomical bullshit, like are magical fairies crying into these tiny jars, whyyyyy are we paying so much

i plan to have this jar of kiehl's til I retire. when it runs out, i will shed actual tears

what have i become

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 03:02 (ten years ago) link

Things I have decided I am willing to pay big dollars for:

  • foundation that I like
  • sunscreen with high SPF and PPD that does not irritate my eyes, and therefore makes me OK with putting it on as needed
  • undereye concealer that cost more than drug store but that I like and can use a pot of for like two years
  • going to the derm to a) make sure I don't have the cancer and b) get a spironolactone rx, which makes my acne disappear like magic without side effects

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 03:17 (ten years ago) link

Oh I use cheap sunscreen on my body; the fancy shit is for my face so that it and my eyes don't sting

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 03:18 (ten years ago) link

Things I am not gonna do big dollars on now that I am a social worker and not a corporate whore:

  • mascara
_* hair stuff. Oh except Kinky Curly Curling Custard, but that lasts me forever_* all other makeup stuff except this Tarte eye brightener thing that I will replace if I can ever use it up (going on 1.5 years now)
_* brazilian waxes

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 03:22 (ten years ago) link

um sorry for fucked up formatting
